800 Riders Brave NLEX

Freedom Ride 2 NLEX Report

An estimated number of 1500 (almost 800 focused at the NLEX northbound destination, 400 were at the other end of NLEX anticipating the riders from Manila, almost 200 targeted SLEX, and more than a 100 darted through Coastal) riders from different regions stormed the expressways as a show of protest against the illegal freeways ban.

At around 10 in the morning last February 25, almost a thousand riders rallied to the NLEX Balintawak tollgates in an attempt to use the expressways. Using a two-line staggered formation, club and individual riders (some, from the provinces) were stopped by the NLEX security and spokespersons even before they reached the booths.

In an attempt to clear the issue, NLEX spokespersons stated that sub400 bikes cannot be allowed in the freeways because of an old TRB ruling. The Freedom Riders rebuked the claim and showed a certified true copy of the SC decision which voids the ban. The spokespersons stalled the conversation and deviated to other issues such as safety of the expressway users and that bikers are more prone to accidents in the freeway. When they were asked for statistics, they hesitatingly said they don’t have any.

The NLEX spokespersons went back to the old and obsolete freeways rule and even showed a TRB memo. The Freedom Riders then asked, if their presence in the freeways was highly illegal, why couldn’t the NLEX authorities simply issue them a traffic ticket? The spokespersons were not able to give a straight answer.

There were two options given to the NLEX personnel: give access to the Freedom Riders or their lane would be blocked until they give in. After almost two hours, the Freedom Riders decided that it had been too long a wait that they went straight to the booth ahead. The NLEX security men blocked the Freedom Riders’ lane, so the rest from back had to swerve to another booth. The NLEX security men again blocked the next booth and the riders gave the same response. They swerved to the next two booths until the Freedom Riders have occupied five lanes.

Tension arose when the NLEX security men resorted to different forms of harassment. A Freedom Rider was pushed towards the pillars of a toll booth while his bike was running. He was thrown to the street and his bike was badly beaten. The security men brandished their shotguns and rifles at the Freedom Riders in an attempt to scare them away. There were pushing and high voices as the Freedom Riders stood their ground and the NLEX security men continued to harass the front liners.

The Freedom Riders stayed amidst the harassment, the heat, the hunger and thirst. One ironic turnaround was when a truck (driver) decided to ram against the bikes blocking his lane. The riders were not pleased but they simply talked with the driver and asked him to wait a little longer.

As more armed men arrived and harassment continued, the MCPF directors decided that it would be unsafe for the Freedom Riders to stay. They regrouped in Quezon Memorial Circle and discussed their next move.

The expressway authorities can expect more actions from the Freedom Riders as long as they hold their illegal sub400 ban.

  21. niu says:

@HondaRider, ganda nang alias mo, hondang honda :) I’m a defensive driver everytime na lumabas ako sa streets mapa cage or mc man. I’ve experienced driving a BUS although ordinary lang (Baliwag Transit), a Ten wheeler truck kargahan ng harvested rice and also based sa mga nakilala kong nagdadala ng mga big trucks, 80-90kph eh tolerable pa for them to control it. So kanila going faster beyond 100-120 (Maximum) eh delikado na. So for that reason a ubone 60-100 hindi mahirap yun na makisabayan sa kanila. Eto ang siste, yun mga may kotse (pero hindi naman lahat) yun iba dito na nag oppose and saying na hindi safe for the ubone sa expressway, maybe, kaya ayaw nila is bcoz iniisip nila na sagabal ang ubone sa way nila pag nagpapatakbo sila ng 140-160+. Honestly yun na-insecure na mahangin raw as per mr HondaRider, I’ve tried once just to test each expressways :) sa Star Toll, you can run upto 190kph using a car na walang sisita sa yo (Once tried it noon kabubukas pa lang). Sa NLEX (New), you can run 190+kph 1.6 liter Nissan Sentra after ng Sta Rita going to Tarlac (tried it also once). Sa SLEX, never mo ma try yun 190kph ng safe. I’ve also tried once 100mph interstate from LA to Vegas (approx 160kph) and cruising on that speed kitang kita na ako eh overspeeding.
Pero all of this overspeeding revelation eh pag naka kotse ka.
Kaya base doon, ubone here in the philippines can use the expressway having the speed limit 60-100kph (star toll, NLEX), 60-80kph (SLEX).

  23. askal says:

Tanga! Kung nakaset-up man yang motor mo at kung nasa 110cc ang engine displacement ang kayang abuting speed ng motor mo ogag 80kph lng at subukan mong gawin 100kph yan tingan natin at kung hindi kumalas mga gear nyan. Hahaha hanep talaga 160kph pa ha.

  25. mickks says:

  26. Iando30 says:

@niu at least you have tried the coastal road.Sa coastal rd I drive my car 60-80 kph lang malimit nasa 80 kph. Ang nalampas ng 80 kph ay bus, yung mga sasakyan o convoy ng mga politiko, ambulance miski walang pasyente at mga super sport bikes whether Honda Super 4 or Yamaha R6 that I usually see in the coastal rd. May nasabay ako XRM may backride (Misis nya yata) and they used the shoulder at 80 kph. Take note that PEATC has motorcycle patrol that is a big bike (not the China Bikes)and they dont travel at speed like other big bikes that zigzag around cages like the white yamaha super sport bike that I saw 3 weeks ago. Kaya Niu I agree with you on your figures. When I go to the Office I can manage 60-80kph with my Honda 100r kaya. Kung ayaw nila tayo payagan ok fine basta I will not let this Big Bikers push me around in the road where UB’s are used especially in roads leading in and out of the Industrial estates where UB’s are numerous. At wala pa akong nakita ng UB riders na naninigaw ng bata pag nabasa sila ng water gun di tulad ng isang Big Biker na nanigaw ng isang 4 year old na babae sa General Trias papuntang tagaytay nung araw ng san juan 2 years ago.

  27. mayer says:

HaHaHaHaHa

@Sir Buragat pasensya na, I’ll suck your buragat na lang.
@mayer gusto mo chupain din kita?

  30. migo_sam says:

  33. IPO says:

Kaya nga my FR eh! give them freedom! give them(ubone)freedom to use EX! give them freedom what ever they want to do w/ their life its their life not urs(sub400cc)yung against lang ha!. Kung may mangyari man sa kanila (wala naman sana) inside EX its not youre fault. ang importante they get the freedom that they want. its up to them kung pano nila iingatan ang buhay nila inside EX.

  34. Iando30 says:

i suggest the plaintiff (the one who filed all the way to the SC) would file Contempt and Writ of Execution against the people who defy the Supreme Court. And let our lawyers do the talking not the one i see here. I rest my case.

  35. niu says:

Guys, buddies. Masama pala mag member dito sa MCP, daming impostor. Hindi ako ang nagpost ng message below. My apology to Buragat at mayer.

  39. BIkeMan says:

big highways for big bikes. i usually see many ubone and low cc bikers drive ultra slow sa roxas blvd.

No to sub-400cc bike on the highway. Hey its the playground for big boys with big bikes.:)

  41. niu says:

  43. Kit says:

Hello, to all you bikers out there. boys & girls alike!

I seek a little advice, can anyone one of you help me out please?
I would like to know what your opinions might be regarding Chineese brand name motorcycles compaired with their japanese big name compeditors, I know the Chinese makes are cheeper to buy but are they worth buying at all? Would I be wasting my money?
I intend to do a little traveling next time when I am over in the Philippines. I’m in my mid fifties and I have not been any kind of bike rider for more than twenty years, but I did hop on one for a short ride when I last visited my inlaws in Bicol, and I was just thrilled to bits about it,I fell in love with the idea of riding around Mayon on a motorcycle, I also love the sight of that magestic volcano, even though it’s had bad press reports lately, it’ both dangerous and ever so beautiful. I have been daydreaming for long enough so I want to make it a reality.
The prospect of riding a large bike again after so long is a bit frightening for me as I have only had a 400cc Yamaha Enduro formerly, however I feel that a bigger bike would suit me better this time round to meet my requirments.I don’t really want to spend a lot of time or money on a brand-new bike(I’m married with kids) but a good second-hand should be okay,I also need to find the names of some good dealer shops in manila. Thank you all in advance. “Kit” (kit_knsll@yahoo.com.au)

  44. enteng says:

Response to HondaRider’s post: I’m assuming your Honda CT90 is a 90cc motorcycle or scooter. It is true that scooters are legal on US freeways (depending on the state, of course). BUT not all. The big manufacturers, Honda, Yamaha, Vespa, and others are manufacturing “freeway legal” scooters that are 250cc and up only. I’m not familiar with the criteria to be “freeway legal” but I’m assuming that the scooter has to be capable of at least 55-60 MPH (or roughly 88.5 – 96.6 KMH). Actually, I think to be safe your cycle has to be able to go at least 10 – 15 MPH faster for emergency situations or even as simple as passing.

So, even here in the States the smaller displacement cycles are not freeway legal. Just not as high as over there where the limit is 400cc. Could it be that even 250cc cycles here are capable of speeds that even slightly higher displacement cycles over there can handle? Even a 250cc Kawi Ninja can sustain 85 MPH and reach a top speed of 110 MPH (136.8 KMH and 177 KMH respectively). Wouldn’t that be enough for the said highway?

My comment to the story, though, is that if your motorcycle is capable of sustaining a certain speed (as dictated by the posted limit and the speed of regular traffic), regardless of the capabilities of the driver (because that’s another story), then you should be allowed to drive in that particular highway. If your vehicle, cycle or cage, is not capable of flowing with the traffic, by all means, please take your rage to the surface road. Don’t even participate in this fight. You will only make the government’s point stronger by going to the rally with your illegally souped-up, unsafe, death traps and wearing nothing but shorts, t-shirt and slippers.

For those with legitimate reasons, keep fighting. From the little I know about this ordeal, the government really has no valid reason to prevent you from riding in these highways (or expressways as you may call it).

I’m hoping to visit the Philippines soon and I will, for sure, be renting a motorcycle. At the very least I will learn first hand about the riding conditions over there. I heard that it’s hell (from friends who have ridden there) – which only means that I definitely have to try it.

    Good Luck!!!!

  45. askal says:

uboners insists that their motorcycle can run 100+ ok kaya ng motor mo pero san mo ginawa yang exhibition mo. alam nyo ang kotse pagtumakbo ng 100kph from toll gate (coastal) to talaba pagdumating ka na sa second bridge ramdam mo ang hampas ng hangin at minsan mas lumalakas pag may kasabayan na bus pano pa kaya ang motor na ubone tumatakbo ng 100kph sa nipis ng katawan iwan ko lng kung san ka pupulutin paghinampas ka ng hangin sana hwag sa funerarya.
