Top Gear Philippines Anti Bike Article

May
An article in Top Gear Philippines entitled “Those Menace on Two Wheels” by Jesus Erle Sebastian, has caused an uproar in the motorcycle community.
Apparently the author has had several run-ins with bikes in his lifetime and feels that has given him the authority to make sweeping statetments about all of us.
Let me get this off my sagging chest. I hate bike riders. Come to think of it, hate doesn’t really describe what i think of those menaces on two-wheels. They violate all traffic laws known to man. They weave in and out of lanes, at times going against the flow of traffic. They are all color blind-they can’t distinguish red from green or yellow.
And he gets nasty too…..
I ashamed to admit it but I sometimes feel a twinge of enjoyment reading about bike riders getting creamed in accidents-not killed, mind you, just injured, preferably with a broken bone or two so they will be off the streets an not be a danger to others for a couple of months.
So, you don’t want us killed, just maimed, mind you, that’s ok in your book.

!@#$ them!!! I seldom get angry with cagers, because I too am a cager. But this is way too above the line! Whether it is his opinion or not, he still has too show atleast respect to all types of vehicles and the one driving it.

This guy’s really way over his senses..i’m a cager & a rider myself…i agree that there are those “pasaway” riders out there, but it doesn’t mean to say that all cagers are responsible drivers..with the soaring price of fuel, practical people look for alternative ways to commute. I hope sombody gives this guy a motorcycle for him to try…if he’s not afraid to ride it at all…

@ching “If that will make him happy. be it. its a free world. btw, is he a saint?”
I beg to disagree. Okay…I’ll let him go on his freedom to write such an article in a distinguished motor magazine like Top Gear. But we are missign the point here. His article gives the wrong impression to the general motoring public. It gives a REALLY BAD impression and not only that… it tolerates physical harm to riders. To acutally take pleasre in reading about riders who get injured or maimed? Common! So much so that the idiot writer himself acknowledges that he may wittingly or not “snag” some of us riders one of these days.
That to me is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE (among other things).
7. RageX | May 17th, 2006 at 4:55 pm
well i guess i can’t blame him for writing that article bcoz most accidents are MC related this days and there are so many riders out there that are being “PASAWAY”. I bet each one of us became “pasaway” too! The only thing that i disagree in his article is that he discrimates the motorcycle industry and make a general statement regarding the riders which is unfair.

Oi baste, here’s my piece. Read it. Read it very well.
Yesterday, I’m on my way to Greenhills.
We’re using our car at nasa unahan kami ng traffic together with bike riders.
It’s our turn to go, green light na. Nung naka-abante na kami biglang may nag beating the red light na koche from the other side.
Nahagip ang isang motorbike, I think it’s an XRM.
The car was driven by a chinese guy.
I guess not. Because you’re scared.
Why? Do you think hihintuan ka ng naka-BMW o naka-jaguar?
And as for me, Baste, wanna ride my ducati?

[...] In first glance, it looks like another incarnation of the Top Gear Article issue. But upon further reading, valid points are seen and you understand where the complaint comes from. Most of the things mentioned in this article are things we see everyday and things that, I personally, do not condone. Mr. Bondoc is right, there is no need for new laws, we have too many laws that are not being enforced anyway. But what we may ask is that those laws, when applied, be applied to all and not be used as a tool of discrimination. [...]

Oh my, This post takes me back a few years.
Firstly, I’m English and from England. I ride motorbikes, currently a kawasaki ZR7, and i have driven cars.
Now, this post about bikes (and bikers) being a menace is not new, its years old.. I’ve heard this so many times and it has been a focal point for all us bikers in the UK. There even seemed to be a ’select’ group of people who complained and they seemed to drive one certain make of car, Volvos.
Due to people like this, the UK now has an abundance of rules and regulations and restriction imposed on everyone.
It is now so hard to ride as we used to..freely..
so hard to open the throttle on a stretch of road for fear of being caught by a speed camera, which are everywhere… thousands of them.. supposed to be there for road safety yet they dont make anything safer, they just generate cash for the police and camera controlers. There are websites against speed cameras in Uk, i suggest you search for them and have a read..before the cameras arrive here in the Philippines.
Ok, lets talk about safety now.
Firstly, cars. Once a year in the UK, every car (this includes ALL four wheel vehicles) MUST go through a strict inspection. It’s called the MOT (Ministry of Transport) test.
This test looks at roughly 250 seperate items on every vehicle. If any item does not meet the tests strict rules, then the owner of the vehicle cannot use the vehicle until repairs have been done and the vehicle re-tested (where it could fail again on something else).
I am a qualified MOT tester. It was my job in the UK before i moved to the Philippines. I see the condition of your vehicles here and i can only laugh. No offense to any of you who owns any form of vehicle… I really mean no disrespect, but if these vehicles here were in the UK, they would be scrapped immediately. They would be considered extremely dangerous.
Bald tyres, broken exhausts, excessively smoking engines, cracked windscreens, seatbelts not working, loose wiring, broken or no lights, just to name a few items.
If the tests that are reqired in the UK were to arrive here over night, there will be virtually no vehicles on the roads here.
Motorbikes in the UK have the same type of test, although, obviously, it’s slightly different.
But the main points are considered, handle bars and fork alignment, wheel alignment, chain slack and condition, suspension, tyres, lights and horn, throttle cable play and several other things.
So theres a few things for all you car and bike owners to consider the next time you get ready to use your vehicle.
Road safety. The majority of accidents are caused by a lack of concentration/observation, alcohol, lack of consideration for other road users.
I’ve seen so many taxi drivers just pull out onto the roads without looking. I always wait for the inevitable CRUNCH as someone drives/rides into the side of us.
Bald tyres on vehicles are another major factor, as are the brakes. But when its raining and there is no tread on a tyre, the tyre becomes almost useless. Bald tyres are best used on dry race tracks..and should stay there..for normal road use, unwise.
So you think you got strict laws here?..you think your roads are safe?..you think your car/bike is the best and you can do as you please in it?
Think again… go take a look at England.
See the constant traffic jams, see the tests we have to go through to drive, see the money we must spend to use our vehicles. See the ever growing amount of speed cameras and roadside stop checks.
Soon, here in the PH, there will be adverising campaigns to stop drink driving, then there will be stricter seat belt laws, then more speeding laws and restrictions… then you’ll get the MOT (or equivalent) tests introduced…
Then and only then will you all wish you’d worked together before to find a better way to use the roads, than let the government and the police do it for you.
take care, happy riding…
