Stereotyped!
17
April
Imagine my surprise when I saw this headline on Inquirer Libre today. It goes on to state how people should be wary of motorcycle riding people because majority of crimes now involve motorcycles.
This type of knee jerk stereotyping is what really gets the ire of regular law abiding motorcycle rider that make up the huge majority of Motorcycle Philippines. This type of irresponsible reporting is exactly what the community does not need now.
This just leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I hope the leaders of the Motorcycle Philippines Federation will not take this sitting down.

This headline is the same as “mag-ingat sa naka kotse,” “mag-ingat sa naglalakad,” “magingat sa madumi ang damit,” etc. Crimes can be committed anywhere, anytime with any form of transport.
After reading the story I didn’t feel it was irresponsible reporting, because there were “facts” of a particular case being reported.
The sad truth is motorcycles have been used for crimes. And so have owner jeeps, cars, vans, trucks, bicycles, skates and skateboards, running shoes and slippers.
What is disturbing is “irresponsible headlining” sensationalizing the story giving that bad stereotyping image to bikers. It’s the Hells Angels syndrome all over again.
Even the blurb “Pulis: Maraming kriminal na gumagamit ng motorsiklo” is very offensive.

I was on my way to work via LRT this am (April 17, 2006) when I read the head from one of the passenger reading Inquirer’s Libre. But did not avail to get one copy for my own.
I was shock and vigilant since it involve a biker (like me). Everytime there is a check point……….. all of us bikers are required to stop for Police inspection. Anyway, it’s for us bikers din naman kaya okay lang ang check-point. the thing is pag-mainit and ulo ng mga pulis medyo sarcastic……… kahit kumpleto ka ng papeles madaming hinahanap andiyan yung kapkapan ka.
The news will make create another bad image for us bikers…… people in media wether in print, in tv or in media are not using cars (except for some nga na they are bikers din at the same time) and they discreminate people using motorcycle. They just want to sell their stories even if the result will be a big damage for the sa tao o sa community.

very sad… another great example of the media sensationalizing things.. crimes can be commited with the use of other vehicles u know? how bout carjackers using other cars? this really enrages me.
media is there to inform.. not to destroy.. sana ma realize to ng gma tao sa likod ng mga balita.
5. batangmalupit | April 18th, 2006 at 11:18 am
6. batangmalupit | April 18th, 2006 at 11:38 am
cont..
7. Froilan | April 18th, 2006 at 11:50 am
I am sure that reporter or journalist is not a motorbike user kaya ganun nalang ang title sa news na ginawa niya.

Kaya tama din ang sinabi ni JMD, and I hope it wasn’t taken out of context. When I wrote: Even the blurb “Pulis: Maraming kriminal na gumagamit ng motorsiklo” is very offensive. I had refered to the blurb in the same way it was written kasi ang implication of this statement is equally offensive AND SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AS A STATEMENT IN ITS OWN.
The warning statement was addressed to to the police. I meant to offend no one especially those
I was a journalist for 10 years before I joined a manufacturing company kaya I know how the job. And stereotyping of abduls, pulis and motorcyclists happens. Sadly…

well, you can’t blame authorities or anyone for stereotyping guys in mc’s. it’s like every single crime here in our country and everyday for that matter, almost always involves mc as getaway vehicle.
here in our place, cebu city, vigilante strikes anywhere and what do they use, mc. robbers in bank or gasoline station use mc. it is so convenient to escape with them.
the once who are more prone to being stopped during checkpoint, mc. especially the u-bones coz they are so convenient and easy to ride/drive.
not much we can do but accept the fact that that’s how it is to be a mc driver unless we can tell those a–holes to use trucks or bicycle for that matter.
11. Blitz | April 20th, 2006 at 7:24 am
I will have to agree with neil. I think the writer was just stating what the pulis said and the pulis stated what is actually happening in the streets, i.e. maraming kriminal gumagamit ng motorsiklo.
I think we really have to accept the fact, hurtful it may be to us, that people, bikers and non-bikers alike, should indeed be a bit more wary of people on bikes especially at night or in secluded areas.
Question is, is there anything we can do to stop these criminals? Probably none but maybe there’s something one of us can do.
12. beachboy | April 20th, 2006 at 10:11 am
i’ve been reading the news for eons and it is a fact these days that most crimes are being perpetrated mostly by guys using bikes. like what neil and blitz agreed upon, it is a fact. you can’t compare it with people committing crime riding otherwise or religious beliefs.
infact, i myself am guilty of stereotyping bikers. there are times when i’m driving my bike and i see two guys riding in tandem overtake me or tailing right behind; they just makes me really nervous. it sends a lot of chill to the bones reading stories being posted here about bikers doin’ crime. we can’t possibly claim that all of these bikers out there are our brothers.
it’s up to us to change the views of police and the people to us. but how? i don’t know. maybe if we gather all our ideas we can make our riding lives better.

where there is smoke…
the public image of the police/military is something they themselves created. even with the most expensive PR management/manipulation, how do you counter negative public perception in light of everyday experiences with corruption and plain incompetence/inefficiency: ambush of businessman mistaken for a carjacker, video of dead alleged carjackers being shot at, unprovoked truncheon strikes to the head of rallyists with linked arms {aray! wala kang pansangga}, lahat ng dapat hulihing buhay para magturo ng mga tunay na pasimuno palagi na lang nagtatangkang tumakas…paktaylo, women being hauled off from vice dens where not a single owner has been arrested.
as a biker, i take great offense in being presumed a criminal before i can prove otherwise due to these police pronouncements.
i do not owe my client any gratitude beyond the fact that i get paid for my professional services as a theater person. policemen as professionals should not expect any different. unless one has his own private army or a retinue of bodyguards (usually including moonlighting policemen) one is at the full mercy of the policeman in any life-threatening emergency. kanino pa tatakbo si juan, eh kababayad lang niya ng tax (evat na naging rvat na ang pinagkaiba lang ay naging mas mahal.)
14. rockler | April 21st, 2006 at 7:52 am
it is a fact that motorcycles can and is being used by criminals. but what about cars and vans? arent vans used for kidnapping? and there was a time when kidnapping was at an all time high but we did not see or hear thestatements:
there are facts bout what is happening yes we know that. but generalizing is very wrong. they should not give such statements. it hurts the reputation of all the bikers.
i find great offense in this.
15. mcphils | April 21st, 2006 at 9:59 am
rockler, good point. that’s what really gets my goat. It’s so convenient to throw all the blame on the motorcyclist and have the stereotype stick. When in truth I honestly believe there are more crimes comitted using vans/cars and what have you. Maybe they should start some sort of campaign banning all vehicles all together and force us all to start using horse drawn carriage. But I honestly believe a headline is still gonna come up stating….”Horse Drawn Carriage Used in Bank Heist….Consider All of Them Dangerous.” or “Trambia used as getaway in kidnap”.. Ridiculous!
16. neon | April 25th, 2006 at 6:59 am
any type of vehicle can be used as a tool for crime but the headline is specific. inquirer should report it other way around.
17. kalinte007 | April 25th, 2006 at 7:01 pm
this “headline” is as stupid as the writer. there is no statistics anywhere in the world that can say that majority of criminals ride motocycles.
under the law no vehicles can be stopped or flagged down unless you have a traffic violation.
check points that target only motorcycles for inspection is a clear case of discrimination. hindi ko kasalanan kung maraming magnanakaw o kriminal ang gumagamit ng motor (siguro nagtitipid din sila) so why blame me for the inability of our police force to capture these lawless elements?
i think it’s about time to stand up to our rights.
18. Uncle Antti | April 26th, 2006 at 8:00 am
There are two things we all can do. The first is to send a stern but constructive letter/email to every single writer and their editors who write one-eyed stories like this. However factual they are.
Make clear point that whereas there are lots of criminals using our way of transportation, there is an other side of it.
The minimum thing you can ask them is to check out this web site and get the other side of the story.
Yes, this is reactionary action. However, it might change the view of individual reporters or editors for the next time. And it is more than just trying to convince each others that the reporter and the police are wrong on this forum. We all already know that.
At least it will give a signal to them that WE do not accept their discriminatory behavior.
And the second thingie, my friends, is to all of us start behaving in the traffic as the law says we should. This is influencing the public opinion by example.
This means for example: Everybody on the bike wearing helmets, never more than 2 on, using proper lanes (not walkways etc. always use RIGHTMOST free lane unless overtaking) for motorised traffic, giving turning signals, taking your fellow bikers (do not come aside a moving bike for safety, especially if it is a big one) AND cages into consideration, not “hovering” and darting reclessly around the road, not driving hi-speed to blind curves (especially not side-by-side), observing traffic signals (red really means no-go) and signs.
Wowwee, that is quite a lot we all can do, isn’t it? And that is just to scratch the surface. A good dicipline is to wear your club colors every time you ride. It kind of tend to make one think what kind of reputation one’s riding behavior build for one’s club.
Feel free to throw the first stone if YOU haven’t done at least one of those above if not every day, at least weekly. I am guilty as charged…
