MANILA, Philippines – To curb robberies and killings perpetrated by motorcycle-riding suspects in Metro Manila, the National Capital Regional Police Office (NCRPO) wants motorcycles to sport larger registration plates with bigger letters and numbers.
The NCRPO said a large number of robberies – such as those targeting bank clients and workers ferrying payroll money – remain unsolved because either witnesses failed to clearly see the license plate of the motorcycle involved or the vehicle has no license plate at all.
“Looking at the present situation, we have found out that the current size of registration plates of motorcycles, which are barely readable from a distance, is grossly disadvantageous to our efforts in spotting and identifying stolen motorcycles and in addressing crime incidents involving male factors riding in tandem,” NCRPO director Chief Superintendent Roberto Rosales said in a letter to Land Transportation Office (LTO) chairman Arturo Lomibao dated May 19.
Rosales wants Lomibao, a former police chief, to play a key role in their effort to minimize crimes perpetrated by suspects riding in tandem on a motorcycle. He also thanked the LTO chief for his support, which “has helped us a lot in developing recommendations that will complement our holistic approach in addressing the notable increase in incidents of (car theft and carjacking) in Metro Manila, especially of motorcycles.”
Aside from enlarging the registration plates of motorcycles displayed at both ends of the vehicle, the NCRPO also wants stickers bearing the letters and numbers in the license attached to both sides of the motorcycle as well as the helmets of the motorcycle driver and passenger.
In his letter to Lomibao, Rosales enclosed the photos and suggested designs of the registration plates and stickers.
“We believe that if we adopt these measures, the PNP (Philippine National Police) could greatly enhance the efficiency of its intelligence operations against crime groups as well as the effectiveness of checkpoints, visibility patrols in crime prevention operations,” Rosales said.
According to Rosales, motorcycles not bearing with larger registration plates and the required stickers would be a ground for the NCRPO to flag down the vehicle for inspection.
Rosales admitted that the NCRPO’s suggestions mean additional work for the LTO, but appealed to his former superior for understanding, saying the scheme would benefit the public.

what is this crap? isn’t this a clear discrimation against motorcycle riders? why don’t they implement this too to car owners? there are criminals too riding SUVs. there are cops riding unregistered motorcycles, many of them criminals too! will they be also covered by this proposal?
if they really want to curb crimes, the bulk of the action has to be at their part, they should work hard in chasing and preventing hoodlums not relying primarily on the bikers’ to adjust for the their benefit. i view this as another evidence of laziness and inefficiency of our peacekeepers. they want the bikers’ to do half of their job while they sleep on duty instead of patrolling our busy streets.
Stupid proposal!! Don’t they know that bank robbers or criminal who use motorcycle as their get away vehicle doesn.t use plate number.
Then we have to comply with their STUPID Proposal. Lomibao, Ang tagal mong mag retire!!
This is NUTS! What a very stupid solution against crime.
Whoever made this proposal should undergo a professional re-evaluation of his credibility as a government servant.
Our government was made by the people, for the people, to represent the people.
Instead of changing the sizes of the plates, why not put more visible physical security measures along vulnerable areas.
A larger plate cannot prevent a criminal from perpetuating crimes!!!! To prevent crime, you must put up people or machines that will ACTUALLY PREVENT A CRIME FROM HAPPENING.
Insanity.
To commit crime you do not identify yourself. You hide with fake ID, licence plates and stolen vehicles whether they be motorcycles or other kind. You cover or fake a licence plate, whatever (make it say “For Registration”!).
Hey while you are at it why not make the licence plate 8ft by 4ft front and back!
Having a sticker on the helmet won’t help, it will only make the helmet less effective.
Where do these people get their brains? Out of a package of crackers? Must be because they are crackers.
Haaaaaa I realy should move to other country where i can ride freely…
Ohhhhh wait, I GOT IT!! Why not BAN ALL MOTORCYCLES to this COUNTRY!!!
or better yet ALL kinds of Transportation!! There problem solved…
Those who works in the city and lives FAR FAR away… better start runnin, you don’t wanna be late..
LAZY and an Idiot, that’s what this Government Official is!!!
You nutcracker!!!
Why not putting bigger name plates and identification cards on all Traffic Officers and Policemen manning our traffic, so that they can be identified easily if they are crooks or not, leave us all riders alone we have enough policies, rules and laws on our shoulder to carry! Amf@!
This makes perfect sense. Actually this is already being done in Singapore sans the bigger rear license plate. Usually they place stickers in front of the legshield or front fenders of their motorbikes. Okay nga eh…retro dating. The reason for the majority of the negative comments in this forum is reflective of the Filipino’s psyche regarding his ride…mas mahirap magpaporma….tsk tsk…
NO arielariasii! IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE!!! Don’t you know that Criminals does’nt USE plate numbers! what they use is
“FOR REGISTRATION” or an Improvised one!! And they use stolen vehicles!GO EDUCATE yourself some more!! I think you need it!
Geeeeeeeze Another NUTCRACKER……………..
_jan…No need to be too sensitive here. I know criminals dont really use real plate numbers but there is nothing wrong for us to be properly and immediately identified. What if you were someone who accidentally sideswiped a bystander and instead of stopping you try to run away. Wouldn’t it be easier if other bystanders will be able to identify such culprit easily? There are other things that could happen on the streets and it does not always involve criminal elements and still need to be identified.
Also please be careful about your comments here. If there is anyone who needs to be educated then it should be you. Your english is very poor and you use the term nutcracker very loosely…as far as I know a nutcracker is a device used to help people crack nuts. If this is a new form of english slang then I am sorry but I havent heard of it so please enlighten me. What version of Webster’s Dictionary do you use?
arielariasii,
Webster doesn’t know how to spell.
bro arielariassi try mo kaya mang sidesweep na naka motor. malamang gugulong ka din. there will be an enough time for the bystanders to identify the plate number.
