Bizarre Pinoy-made Scooters amuse the world!

Above is the image used as a teaser for this Saturday’s (Dec. 9) Vespa Attack II: Invasion Philippines!

Honestly, I initially thought the image is a product of some Photoshop manipulation; but it turns out to be an actual shot from an actual race event that took place in 2005 during the Imbayah celebration of our Ifugao brothers up north. The now famous photograph by Sly L. Quintos (déjà vu photos) has captured the fancy of numerous websites that features unique, funny or bizarre images and contents the world over. Well, it’s actually no surprise since it surely does look very surreal. Even most ordinary Filipinos wouldn’t know these things ever existed in our very own backyard. It looks more like a scooter that a ficticious character like Fred Flintstone would use, not by real men in these modern times.

The image first got featured in the oddly popular UniqueDaily.com late last month (along with the infamous photo of Britney Spear’s naked beaver!) and has been picked-up by other international ‘cult’ sites since. Next to take notice is Izé.hu of Hungary and Domicile of Denmark (link intentionally leftout as the site’s general content may offend others *wink*). The image also landed on Limk.com of Turkey with a photo caption the reads: “Filipin Yapımı Vespa Motorsikletler” (translation: “Philippine imitation of a Vespa motorcycle” hahahaha!). As of this writing, two other links to the image are live on the frontpages of couple of US-based websites namely, Codewolf.com & Linkings.com.

These indigenous scoots are used in a freewheeling race that runs for about four to five kilometers downhill in Banaue. I have previously posted some additional info and more photos of these unique Ifugao scooters in my personal blog so head on there if you want to know more about these wicked wooden wonders!

It’s amazing that all these exposure started from one humble teaser made for the Vespa Attack II event which, by the way, finally happens this Saturday. All Pinoy Vespa riders and enthusiasts are invited to join this annual rallye that is now on its 2nd year.

• The itinerary for Saturday’s City Ride is posted here.
• See here some images from last year’s Attack!
