STA, Barbara, Iloilo — Glen Aguilar underscored his claim as the country’s most successful rider in history, topping the three-part Camel Supercross International Championship Series 2006 and winning his 10th national title before an adoring crowd at the Sta. Barbara racetrack.

Pushed to the limit by last year’s Asian Supercross champion James Robinson of New Zealand and fast-rising Kenneth San Andres, Aguilar rose to the challenge and turned doubters into believers with another spectacular performance in the season-ending race organized by the National Motorcycle Sports and Safety Association (NAMSSA) and sponsored by Camel.

Aguilar dominated three of the four races in the Camel pro open and pro 125 categories to wrap up the overall title before more than 10,000 fans who flocked to this ancient town known as the site of the first Ilonggo revolution against Spanish tyranny in November, 1898.

“I’m so happy to win the Camel title again. It was another great year for me,” said Aguilar, known in the local supercross circle as the “Flying A’ for his gravity-defying rides and devil-may-care attitude.

“It was a little difficult for me this year. Both James and Kenneth pushed me to the limit and also gave their best shots,” added Aguilar, who also moved within one title of matching the combined 11 titles won by fellow motocross greats Jovie Saulog (7) and Jolet Jao (4) in the 80s up to the early 90s.

His heart-stopping Camel pro open and pro 125 battles with Robinson in the morning and San Andres in the afternoon race which he eventually both won kept the crowd to its feet and left it awe-struck on a hot and sunny Sunday afternoon.

Robinson, winner of the Camel leg in Ormoc City held early this month, stayed in the thick of the fight against Aguilar only to fade out midway in the first moto following a costly spill while negotiating a sharp bend going into the back-breaking whoop de doos.

Aguilar’s near-flawless showing came before Clarita Belarma of Miag-ao, Iloilo emerged as the lucky winner of the 2006 BMW F-650 GS enduro motorcycle, the grand prize in the much-awaited draw of the Camel MotoGear promo tour.

Other lucky Camel smokers from Iloilo, Bacolod and Ormoc also went home with attractive Camel promotional items such as Camel Supercross gear sets, Oz Racing supercross gear bags, Oz racing backpacks and Camel twin packs.

San Andres also lived up to his billing as the next most important star in the local supercross circuit, finishing runner-up to Aguilar in both the pro open and pro 125 categories and drawing hordes of autograph-seeking female fans to his pit area.

The pride of Valenzuela City provided the biggest challenge to Aguilar in the afternoon race after Robinson decided to skip action due to a numb right hand which he sustained after the spill.
The other Sta. Barbara leg winners of the Camel series are Toti Alberto (executive), Dexter Bacabac (veterans), Alvin Beech (intermediate), Michael Desbaro (novice local enduro), Kenneth Pumaren (beginner production), Jovino Tuebane (beginner enduro), Heres Suresca (novice 125 and novice open production), Gilbert Elumba (undebone), and Francyl Barredo (pantra).
