Arai Helmets has added a new graphic design called the "Wraith" to its 2003 top-of-the-line RX-7 Corsair model.
It will be featured on Arai's new RX-7 Corsair model, the latest incarnation of Arai's RX-7 series. The original RX-7RR, initially brought to the market as a roadracing helmet, is credited with introducing top-mounted diffuser ventilation to motorcycle helmets. The new Corsair is the first of the line to have a name instead of a numerical model designation. The reason, according to an Arai spokesman, is because the Corsair incorporates so many new and patented features "it represents a major step forward in the RX line".
First in its list of patented features is Arai's newest SNC (Structural Net Composite) shell construction. SNC incorporates a structural net reinforcing material embedded between Arai's exclusive Super Complex Laminate construction layers to further improve shell integrity. The company says the SNC construction also allows more weight to be removed from the top of the shell, reducing helmet weight (the Corsair is almost three ounces lighter than the previous RX-7RR4) and lowering the center of gravity for better balance and reduced fatigue, resulting in improved rider comfort.
The Corsair's new "enhanced organic" shell shape was designed to conform more to the head's natural shape for improved comfort and fit, to seal better, and to further minimize wind turbulence. Additional shell features include new bottom trim, a new non-removable neckroll, a reduced gap between the shield and shell to minimize wind turbulence flowing over the shield and onto the shell, and new shell-mold features to strengthen the shell, and enhance airflow and overall helmet appearance.
Other exterior features include a patented new Dual-Pivot Chin Vent. The mechanism's easy-to-operate vent increases airflow capacity in two positions. The first position sends air directly to face; the second position directs air to the shield for improved de-fogging. The new vent works in conjunction with a new Breathguard design that channels more fresh air to the inside surface of the shield while at the same time diverting hot breath down and away from the shield surface.
The RX-7 Corsair has Arai's latest Type-8 Diffuser design with redesigned and improved intake and exhaust ports to both improve airflow and reduce wind turbulence. It also has larger 10mm diffuser holes (increased from 7.8mm on the previous RX-7) to move even more air. The Corsair's new Delta-3 top center intake scoop is claimed to scavenge more air to further improve interior airflow. And Arai's latest J-type Side Pods have a lower profile and more closely match the shape of the shell to provide a cleaner, aerodynamic look.
Inside, the Corsair is the first Arai helmet to feature its new Dry-CoolŪ liner material. Differentiated from other liners by its "rich new color and perforated satin feel", Dry-Cool actually utilizes micro water cells to improve moisture and heat transfer from the head into the airflow around Arai's patented Space Frame Liner. The result is said to leave the rider's head dryer and cooler at the end of a long or hot ride and also allows the liner to dry much faster between rides.
The Corsair retains the RX-7 series' fully-removable, washable liner and pull-down air spoiler. Like all Aria's, it has a full 5-Year Limited Warranty - an industry-leading Arai feature for the past 10 years.
Available in sizes XS to XXL, the Arai Wraith has an MSRP of $694.95.
