Free trade 2010??

Has the Japan/Philippine free trade act been ratified? What about the ASEAN 2010 legislation? These would have permitted importation of motorcycles without paying duty. The Japan act would give access to Japanese manufactured vehicles and the Asean act would allow importation from other ASEAN countries such as Thailand where Kawasaki manufactures a number of their big bikes.

Anybody up on the current status? Are any PI shops getting ready to add big bikes to their showrooms? Kawasaki started selling their Thai manufactured big bikes all over Thailand last year with great success. The new 650 ER6N I looked at there was selling for the equivalent of it's US MSRP which made it a very attractive deal. Something similar here would be great.

Re: Free trade 2010??

Totoo ba to? But beneficial to sa mga consumers.

I think they don't know.

The Japan agreement is ratified and will go into effect on Dec. 11, 2009.

Now who is smart enough to take advantage of this and start importing new big motorcycles?

Or maybe they want to sell their motos before the value drops. All the gray market big bike dealers in Thailand closed when the new models with warranty arrived on the scene.

I sure wouldn't be buying a bike before this takes effect.

Re: Free trade 2010??

Re: Free trade 2010??

ito ba yung dating JPEPA , which in my understanding would be a free trade agreement between Japan and Philippines.

You've been listening to the propaganda put out by the people that may be hurt by the free trade deal. Like the companies that put together moto's in the Philippines who can't compete with the quality coming in the new bikes from Japan when the huge duty paid by the importers is dropped. It's merely leveling the playing field. If you can't compete you shouldn't be in that business. If you need your competitors to be excessively taxed to make your product viable in the market you will need to be more efficient to keep your market share.

And this free trade deal applies to lots of stuff like cars, electronics, etc. New products, not used. The people currently importing Japanese merchandise will need to step up and import more and bigger. or new companies will need to be formed to do it. At the very least, prices of Japanese bikes currently being imported should drop should.
