Smile Ocotillo Wells Ride Report (Jan. 30-31, 2010)

Ocotillo Wells Ride
San Diego County, California
Jan 30-31, 2010

A gorgeous day with an average temperature of 75F during day time was the forecast at San Diego County area on the last weekend of January 2010. Seven “No Fear” riders took the opportunity to have a two days weekend to explore the very popular off-road playground at Ocotillo Wells which offers variety of multiple terrains that challenge the Man and their Machines. We scouted the Blow Sand Hill, the Devil’s Slide, the Gas Domes, and a cross-country adventure ride via Imperial County.

Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Park is open 24/7 and requires no fee from park users. Obviously, it was busy with all sorts of desert vehicles this time of the year. One of the popular spot is the Blow Sand Hill which, as its name states, was formed by wind that carries sand from miles and piles the material uphill. Another frequently visited part of the area is the Devil’s Slide. Its 200-foot high granite mountain and sand islands lure the courageous riders to try the extremes. Meanwhile, the mud volcano with its bubbling top at Gas Domes fascinates off-road enthusiasts with this natural phenomenon.

Who would think that this wide stretch of desert was once a marine environment million years ago? We passed by Shell Reef where fossils of clams and oysters can be found. To preserve this ancient reef, this area is closed to riding but can be explored at the foothills.

For two days, we tread the flat and rolling terrain of this desert, climbed sand dunes, traversed single narrow tracks, descended to river washes through steep ravines, and made trails where there are none. We rode, got stuck on mud, fell and stood up, one even dived downhill. With the desert fury and challenging desert landscapes, the riders’ endurance, skills and patience were tested. In the end, we all survived and made our wishes come true. Our big smiles and our wild adventure will remind us the camaraderie of a good friendship.

Please allow us to share our adventure photo stories. Enjoy......

SATURDAY LUNCH

During our Saturday lunch, we had some special guest from our Lost Coyote's motorcycle group who happen to be riding also along our nearby area. We had bbq bratwurst sauges, roasted chicken, Italian bread, tortilla, combo cheese, and some wine to re-energize our group. Life is good...

THE LOST COYOTE'S ADVENTURE STORY

Quote by Sir Ed:
Towards the end of this Ride traveling west in the San Felipe Wash toward Borrego Springs, we encountered mud so deep and gooey that even Sergio and his Mighty TE510 Husky could not get through.

Sir Sergio ate some muds

LOOP # 4: CROSS-COUNTRY via IMPERIAL COUNTY (68.9 Miles)

We wish today to get the best cross-country dirt route. Our goal is to explore the trails that parallel Hwy 78 including Hwy 86. And to endure our journey, we will play the Geocache game using a GPS to cross the desert floor on our way back to the camp with our own trail. We're all very excited....

Counter clockwise loop

Life is good......
But time is short......

Don't worry too much cause......
It will never get dark, as long as we have head lights......
And we will never get lost, as long as we have gas......

Till next time my friends and always ride safe......

Hi Sir Jojo,

That is what I call ATV-diving with style LOL…(so that’s why they invented brakes LOL). After “exploring” that crevice and riding several trails later, I found myself in a mud encounter . Thanks to Mark who liberated me from that sticky situation.

See him bathed in mud. (Rene, I grabbed this from your album, thanks).

My first ATV ride was hilarious, educational, daunting, and challenging. I made it through those relatively flat sandy terrains and technical tracks. My hands though are a little numb. Next time I will ease my grip a bit on the handle bars LOL.

Thanks to Sir Bert for inviting 98virago and me to join them in that desert adventure. Thanks also to Mam Carmen (Sir Bert's lovely wife) for the hearty Mexican breakfast of tortilla, over easy eggs and salsa.

Ride safe,
Coco

Sir Jojo,

Hindi mo lang alam sir, halos hindi makabangong si Mam Coco the next morning eh.

Kit-kits tayo sa March and we will just follow your lead wherever you take us. So far, Enrique, Toti, Ben, Rene, Coco, and me are coming over. Wish we can scuba diving again in Boracay....

See you soon...
