If you choose to ride ,how do you decrease the risk?

For riders:
Always wear a helmet

Always wear protective gear

Never ride under the influence

Ride only in good weather conditions

Ride responsibly

Assume you’re invisible, constantly scan the road

Ride extra defensively

Take regular MSF courses

And for the automobile drivers ...
Look for motorcycles, especially when checking traffic at an intersection

Because of it's small size, a motorcycle may look farther away than it is

Because of it's small size, a motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car’s blind spots

Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or merely rolling off the throttle, thus not activating the brake light

Motorcyclists often adjust position within a lane to be seen more easily and to minimize the effects of road debris, passing vehicles, and wind

Don't expect a motorcyclist to always be able to dodge out of the way

Stopping distance for motorcycles increases quickly when the road is wet

When a motorcycle is in motion, don't think of it as motorcycle; think of it as a person

Re: If you choose to ride ,how do you decrease the risk?

I ride thinking 'everyone is trying to kill me', especially when I'm on four - five lane highways during quitting time (or in the morning when everyone's racing to get to work).

Anticipation is the key..coupled with your bike skills and common sense.

pag malawak naman yung daan, ride our MC like a car

Over here, nasa fast lane (HOV) or passing lane ako palagi..that means yung pinaka left most lane. Nasa left mo yung center divider..that way, yung mga sasakyan sa kanang lane na lang ang iwo worry mo. I don't find it comfortable na napapa gitnaan ako ng mga sasakyan on either side.

Riding in the rain can be fun. If you know how to.

I ride everyday. Not because I want to. But because I find it more convenient than commuting.

Umulan or bumagyo... I go to office with my bike. Right attitude, right skills, right rain gear and respect for other motorists. I get to go home quickly and safely.

ayoko sanang gayahin ang sagot mo .. pero pareho tayo.. hehehe.. i always ride.. rain or shine

maging defensive at responsible..

cool na yun..

Re: If you choose to ride ,how do you decrease the risk?

We are not the only user of the road... During bagyo or ordinary rain lang there are many risk factors involve gaya ng low visibility, slippery road, strong head or cross wind, UFOs and many others why put your life to risk if you can avoid? Pwede kang ikaw ang magkamali o yung other users din.

Re: If you choose to ride ,how do you decrease the risk?

i let others be aware of my presence by staying visible to the vehicle's side mirror in front of me. i also trained myself to be aware of those i can not see on my side mirror. mas delikado yung di mo nakikita sa side mirror yung nasa blind spot mo coz pwede tayong magkamali sa pagtiming and pag estimate.

Re: If you choose to ride ,how do you decrease the risk?

If some of you dont want to ride in the rain then dont! If you feel na madidisgrasya kayo... you probably will... so dont ride.

It takes skills and knowledge to ride in the rain. In fact during our application training... It was raining.

Jake of MSF can attest to this.

Re: If you choose to ride ,how do you decrease the risk?

Hindi naman talaga pinagbabawal ng MSF ang pag momotor during rain kaya be very extra carefull sa special situation as this .

ito nasa MSF manual :

Haul out the raingear you’ve stowed in a handy spot. Make sure your rain gloves and rain boots fit properly. Poorly fitted ones can lessen your ability to brake and shift.
Be most cautious when it first starts to rain. That is when the water goes into all the dimples in the road, and the oil residue from passing vehicles floats to the top. That gets slippery! A wise motorcyclist will stop for a cup of coffee when it starts to rain; who knows, it could all be over in 15 minutes, and you won’t even have to put on the rainsuit.
After a while the oil will be washed off to the side of the road. However, traction on a wet surface may not be as good as on a dry road. Be careful.

Re: If you choose to ride ,how do you decrease the risk?

Yes your are right but the title is " to decrease the risk " so in order to decrease the risk is to avoid riding in bad weather, then potential risk will became nill. ( referring only to risk involve in driving during bad weather)

Re: If you choose to ride ,how do you decrease the risk?

Another thing I do to minimize or decrease the risk since ulan ang pinaguusapan, is to check weather forecast for the entire week. The worst is being surprised while riding at biglang bubuhos malakas na ulan. Sometimes you will not get the chance to pull over and put on that rain coat or enjoy that cup of joe. Sometimes we just bear and grin and try to get home in one piece. With a degree of certainty, where there are mountains, usually umuulan sa tuktok nyan just like here in the islands.

Re: If you choose to ride ,how do you decrease the risk?

Hindi lang naman rain ang potential hazard. Say its a good weather... pero yung dadaanan mong road eh basa... paano na yan?

In my opinion, riding in the rain should not be included on the list.

Re: If you choose to ride ,how do you decrease the risk?

pasali...

I, myself, ride my bike rain or shine, during typhoon ondoy and pepeng, i used my bike to go to work, night shift at that.

some added risk during rain:
- mas madulas ang kalsada (kung binasa ng ulan)
- lower visibility

Re: If you choose to ride ,how do you decrease the risk?

Mga roads na oil soaked because of other vehicles.

You decrease the risk by knowing how to ride and understand how your machine performs.

Re: If you choose to ride ,how do you decrease the risk?

Simple answer:
Use common sense .. and this applies generally to everything, from defensive driving to being cautious and aleert as a rider ... and this will decrease ... and even eliminate the risk and just enjoy riding your bike.

Examples of questions where common sense is simply the answer:
Why never overspeed on a populated street?
Why never overspeed when road is wet?
Why never overspeed when a sharp curve is ahead?
Why never overspeed when you don't know what's on the other side of the blind curve?
Why never ride like a moronic maniac rider?
Why give way to a fellow road user?
Why slow down when approaching a pedestrian lane?
Why never honk you horn to pedestrians crossing a pedestrian lane?
Why use side mirrors the way it should be used?
Why stop and look both sides on a crossroad?
... and lots more.

Yes, riding in the rain applied with discipline is still safe, why ride irrespinsibly when the road is wet? I do enjoy riding while its raining.
