I recommend that you find a private place like an empty parking lot to put some seat time on that bike before riding the dangerous streets of your town. Better yet, take a riding course given by Jake. You'd be surprised how one day of training can raise the fun factor of riding a bike. Safety gear? Get a good helmet - the best that you can afford.
Talk to a mechanic who knows your bike. There are way you can lower the ride height of the XLR to make your riding more comfortable.
