    HISTORY OF MOTARD RACING & OTHER STUFF

    Supermoto, or Supermotard, or just Motard, is a cross-over or evolution of motocross and road racing. Races are commonly held on road racing or medium sized go-kart tracks with an off-road section in the infield. Most supermoto race tracks are typically configured with approximately 70% tarmac and 30% dirt with small jumps but a dirt section is not required.

    The motorcycles used are frequently custom-created combinations of off-road motorcycles and road-racing rims/tires, known as 'supermotard' bikes. Riders also wear a combination of road race and offroad equipment, normally leathers and a motocross helmet and boots. Unlike normal motorcycle racing, the emphasis lies on slower (<100 mph / <161 km/h), short and twisty motard tracks, where rider skill matters far more than outright machine performance.
    Where supermoto, motard or supermotard all began

    Supermoto has its origins in the 1970s where ABC’s Wide World of Sports was the highest-rated sports show in the United States. In 1979, ABC commissioned a made-for-TV event to be included in the series, named Superbikers, whose intention was to find the ultimate all-around motorcycle racer.

    Superbikers was then manifested as a yearly event run at southern California's Carlsbad Raceway. The show's tarmac-and-dirt motard courses were intended to draw on talent from the worlds of off-road, flat-track and road-racing. World and National Championship-winning motorcycling greats such as Kenny Roberts and Jeff Ward, whose respective sports at the time were road-racing and motocross, participated in the supermoto races. The Superbikers quickly became a huge Nielsen rating contender, running until 1985, at which point ABC was forced to cancel the show due to new management and cuts; its cancellation also initiated a long sabbatical of motard sport in the USA. The European racers who participated in the sport at Carlsbad, however, brought motard racing back to Europe with them, where it quickly gained popularity in countries such as France.

    2003 signalled the resurrection of the sport in the United States with the birth of the AMA Supermoto championship and with the ESPN X-Games Supermoto championship.
    Motard bikes before 1990

    Prior to the 1990s, supermoto bikes, including the precursor motorcycles used in Superbikers, were converted open-class two-stroke motocross or enduro bikes desired for their lightweight and jumping abilities. The supermotard motorcycles currently used for Supermoto racing are predominantly single-cylinder 4 stroke powered dirtbikes with 17" or 16.5" wheels.

    The 17" rims allow the use of up to 5.5" wide superbike road racing slicks. Slick tires are often hand grooved on the rear tire to facilitate slightly better acceleration on the dirt stretches of a supermoto course. Suspension is lowered and slightly stiffened in comparison with a stock dirt bike, and braking power is improved with oversize front brake rotors and calipers. Despite the lack of trees on motard courses, 'bark busters' (hand guards) are frequently added to supermoto bikes due the extreme cornering angles achieved by riders.

    Hand guards also greatly improve survivability of the brake & clutch levers during a fall making supermotard bikes highly crash resistant and often able to quickly re-enter the fray during a race following a crash.
    first factory-produced supermoto

    In 1991 Italian manufacturer Gilera released the 'Nordwest' model, the first factory produced supermoto. Other European manufactures quickly followed suit, among them KTM, Husqvarna, Husaberg AB and CCM Motorcycles; all manufacturers whose emphasis were off-road models at the time. Motard models were developed for both track and road use.

    It took another 10 years, until the mid 2000s for Japanese manufacturers, such as Yamaha (2004), Honda (2005) and Suzuki (2005) to start introducing motard models in the European market. Most of the supermoto bikes sold to the public are more domesticated models for road use rather than outright racing, for example the Suzuki DRZ400SM, a reliable street legal supermotard bike, or the DRZ400E or DRZ400S fitted with spoked or cast alloy wheels.

    Slower and heavier but rock solid dual-purpose motorcycles such as the Kawasaki KLR650 are good examples of this. In the spring of 2006, Italian bike manufacturer Ducati announced their entry in the motard class with the "Hypermotard" machine which has more in common with streetfighter-type motorcycles than realistically being considered a true supermoto bike capable of surviving jumps and crashes. KTM currently has available a supermotard 950 "V" twin that could be described as the ultimate road going Hypermoto, and a brand new (and well appreciated) the single cylinder KTM690SM. Aprilia also has two new (450 and 550) SXV v-twin track oriented supermoto bikes for sale.
    motard bikes wind up on the street

    Due to the popularity, versatility, excitement and durability of these motard motorcycles, some owners modify them for street use. In order to do this, headlights, taillights, horn, mirrors and street-legal tires among other occasional modifications are needed. Some state motor vehicle departments take a dim view of turning off-road bikes into street legal supermotard bikes.

    In Europe most Supermoto bikes are sold street legal from the factory and later tuned for race use. Supermotard type bikes make excellent city-goers as their upright seating position provides great visibility in traffic. Their narrow frames and light weight also make them incredibly maneuverable, as well as easier to ride in twisty or less than ideal road conditions that make most sportbikes have to slow down.

    Spoked motard kits are still relatively expensive so many riders opt to convert cast wheels from sports bikes, which of course is what this site is all about.

    Please note this information is adapted from a Wikipedia page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motard and is under the GNU Free License Agreement, unlike the rest of this site.

    Conversion Specs................

    HONDA XR 200

    Front width
    (diameter may range from 16-18 inches)
    3.5 = best
    1.75-2.5

    Tire
    3.5 =120/70 = best
    3.5 =120/60
    2.5 =100 - 110/70
    2.5 =100 - 110/60

    Rear width
    (diameter may range from 16-18 inches)
    4.25 = best
    2.5-3.5

    Tire
    4.25 =140/70 = best
    4.25 =140/60
    3.5 =130/70
    3.5 =130/60

    HONDA XRM / may also apply to other under bones

    Front width
    (diameter may range from 14-18 inches)
    1.85 = best
    1.20-2.5

    Tire
    1.85 = 90/80 = best
    1.20 =90/80
    2.5 =100/70

    Rear width
    (diameter may range from 14-18 inches)
    2.5 = best
    1.45-2.5

    Tire
    2.25 =100/70 = best
    1.45 = 90/80
    1.85 =100/70

    Tubes (I suggest using the same width for the rim or max 1 inch smaller only / don't go for wider tubes)
    Sizes I've encountered 1.20 - 4.25

    IMPORTANT:
    FRONT:
    Check distance between fork shafts or housing, you must have at least 1 inch clearance for rim
    (if clearance is 4.5 inches you could use maximum 3.5 inches rim size) always measure the rims outside width some 3.5 are actually 4 inches wide)

    REAR:
    Check distance between chain and swingarm, you must have at least 1.25 inch clearance for rim
    (if clearance is 5.5 inches you could use maximum 4.25 inches rim size) always measure the rims outside width some 4.25 are actually 4.5 inches wide)

    :::::::: sometimes the chain will touch the tire during cornering all we could do is leave a minimum of 2mm in tire and swing arm clearance to get away from chain as far as possible:::::::

    In my own honest opinion po ito mga Sir.......

    Recommended brand for rim:
    1. Performance = expensive
    2. TGO or Takasago = value for money
    3. Speed or SPD

    Recommended shop for rim:
    1. Coleannes / Tunsuya Malabon: 4482011
    2. Exceed / Caloocan: 3622665

    Recommended brand for Tire:
    1. Bridgestone Battlax 090= expensive
    2. Pirelli Diablo= expensive
    3. IRC Japan RX-01 = value for money

    Recommended shop for Tire:

    1. Coleannes / Tunsuya Malabon: 4482011
    2. Exceed / Caloocan: 3622665
    3. Promoto / Makati: 8433082

    Recommended shop for End Pipe:

    Mighty Mike / Tondo Manila: 253-9531

    romdi_BRO2000 = TO: Sir SwoOosh or CS,

    San po ba magandang mag pa align at mag palagay ng rayos sa rim?
    Ano no po ba size ng rayos na ilagay for XLR 200, kc sir pag oversized japan na rayos masyado malaki d po kasya sa mga butas ng boha?
    Nilalakihan po ba ang butas sir?

    Hope to hear from mga sir.

    Thanks po
    Dalawang size ang over size na rayos may mataba at meron pinaka mataba na pang side car ng tricycle... I suggest na kung ano lang ang papasok sa butas ng hub sya ang dapat gamitin wag mong pababarena yan kasi hihina ang hub..

    Re: Motard Conversion Assistance Part 5

    ... baka puwede natin ituloy dito yung tire brand questions sa Rides and Touring para di ma-OT.

    In my opinion mga chief, the IRC RX-01 can provide enough grip for the DRZ400SM's power even at the tracks, it would be another story for anything more powerful than that (eg. WR450, CRF450, etc.). This tire doesn't also perform well in the wet. Durability however is outstanding as the tire can withstand a few burnouts and some power wheelies. I've driven over 1,000kms on it and the tire still looks good, maybe it's also because of our bike's light weight configuration. But the best part of getting these tires is it costs almost half of what other brands can offer locally.

    sir,

    Try mo na lang sa YRS sa mandaluyong kay yoyong o kaya kay chris ng Darkbenz. Pag kay DarkBenz ka bibili eh dapat dala mo ung motor mo para masukatan nila. May mga sample din silang mga sticker na gusto mong ipaprint.
