View Full Version : Painting my almost new helmet - (DIY, GDR)
TriFlector September 3rd, 2007, 12:14 PM I think most of you wouldn't like this topic because your number concern is safety. My reason for doing this project is simple - kung ayaw mo ng kaparehong suot (damit man o hindi) as 2 to 3 other guys you normally see at the office parking lot, either you get rid of your stuff or you play with it.
Sayang naman kung itapon, right? So better play with it nalang.
I own this hugely popular GDR modular helmet (it has the same design as Spyder). Mine however is a gift and not the class A version you see being sold almost everywhere. :s Since it's a gift, wala akong puhunan, walang hinayang pag nasira.
The dominant color is black so I thought of painting it over with glossy black but leave out some design on the crown to give my helmet some accent. I thought of adding AGV sticker set from DarkBenz before applying the final clear coat.
Here you go...Bill of Materials
01. 1" masking tape (P10)
02. Do-It Universal Aerosol Gun (P249 was P349.75 at ACE)
03. Bosny Acrylic Epoxy Black (P89 was P99 at ACE)
04. Some old news paper
** Optional
05. Bosny Acrylic Epoxy Clear (P89 was P99 at ACE) - Item 02 above has a fine glossy finish. Finger prints wont stay if you rub it off with micro fiber cloth. Pero for added protection, you can apply clear coat later.
06. Some rag gloves - to cover your hands
07. balaclava or face mask - I even had to put on a full face helmet with mask to reduce the intake of the fume. Malakas talaga ang amoy.
08. clear safety goggles - the mist might get into your eyes (If you have a full face helmet, ala OCC, better na yon)
09. X-acto craft knife - to cut out nicely the edges of the masking tape.
10. collapsed balikbayan box - to contain the fume
11. 1.5L bottle of Coke as stand or 1.8kg Infant milk can - so you can easily turn the shell while you paint. And for drying din.
12. hair dryer - In case you can't wait for 2-3 minutes for your next coat.
13. anti-static duster or microfiber cloth - to avoid dust particles trapped when you apply clear coat.
14. extra helmet - not in case you ruin your project
15. and lots of patience
Procedure
1. Mask out all the areas you dont want paint on. Use masking tape, old news paper and x-acto.
2. Prep your dirty area. Lay out as many newspaper on the ground as possible to protect your workplace. Check where the air is coming from. If you are going to use a balikbayan box or old 29" TV boxes, make sure the mouth doesn't face the direction where the air is coming from.
3. Shake the spray paint vigorously.
4. Put the project on a steady platform.
5. Practice painting without actually spraying paint. This process will allow you to make adjustments to your posture and work area. The more natural your movement is, the better. Imagine where your one hand will touch and turn the shell while your other hand does the painting. Imagine scenarios where the helmet or stand will actually fall and touch something, make adjustments already to your platform. Imagine how far your spraying hand is from the subject (6-8 inches)
6. Repeat step 5 as needed. If this is your first time, you've got to practice.
7. Now paint away! Apply the first coat evenly. Don't over spray so you wont even out the rest. Let dry. Repeat step for second and third coat.
What I did for my first coat was spray from 8+ inches to produce a rough coat or surface. Then I left the shell to dry overnight. I kinda thought the second coat will actually stick much better to a rough surface since I did not sand off the original paint. Well, it did. When I woke up I applied the 2nd coat, dry with the help of a blower (2000 watts) then apply the 3rd coat.
I waited for the helmet to dry up completely for 2 days before I remove the masking tapes.
I'm still stuck which designs below should I stick with (using DIY sticker cutout) before I top the helmet with clear coat. :o

Sige sir. :D

Drifter1025 September 3rd, 2007, 12:56 PM this is what i had in mind too... i also have that spare helmet same design gdr. But nung nakita kong me nakasuot na mga messanger parang ayoko na, gusto ko na itapon. I want to stick to my agv ti tech, kaso nakakapanghinayang paulanan, saka di ko maiwan sa motor yung helmet hassle pa. Hindi ba sya amoy pintura even after weeks of use?

Hindi naman, sir... In fact day 1 palang gusto ko ng isuot. :s

Saang Ever yun sir?
So far Bosny is ok for this helmet. I was expecting a dull coat pero I guess it's beginner's luck that I got a super glossy finish. Maybe in 6 months I might sand off this paint job and try another color and design.

Kayang kaya mo yan sir. :s
If the original paint of the helmet is worn out (yellowish in color and has cracks) dapat ng i-sand off yun. Paint over may not last.
2 cans of Bosny (color and clear), P200+ Spend 2 hours max inclusive of masking and interval between coats na yan. Yakang yaka mo yan.
I guess the Aerosol Gun did the trick for me.

TriFlector September 3rd, 2007, 05:01 PM nice one,sir triflector.......pwde ba mahiram yung gun na lang?hehehe......mukhang mahihirapan ako on my matt black Zeus 508W ah?
Good luck sir. hehehe.
Yung gustong mag donate ng helmet for the advancement of this DIY painting tutorial, I accept slightly used condition lang po.
jaireh September 3rd, 2007, 05:21 PM nu kaya sasabihin ng mga forumers or riders na ayaw imodify ung helmets nila kc it will affect the quality

Big things start from small beginnings. Malay mo baka maging isa akong sikat na pintor bullet day. :O

Jesterxrm September 4th, 2007, 07:42 AM teka muna sir - did you sand the top coat first before starting to paint? parang di ko nabasa sa procedures eh...parang after putting the tape and covering the areas that wont be painted eh nag spray na kayo...no need na ba for sanding or paint remover?

TriFlector September 4th, 2007, 09:39 AM teka muna sir - did you sand the top coat first before starting to paint? parang di ko nabasa sa procedures eh...parang after putting the tape and covering the areas that wont be painted eh nag spray na kayo...no need na ba for sanding or paint remover?
Lihain pa ba (general practice)?
IMHO, for new materials, no need to completely sand off everything. AFAIK, you sand off lang a helmet or anything that needs new paint if the original paint has worn off (or has discoloration), the top coat has turned yellowish, there are chips here and there.
If you do a "powder like" first coat, when it dries up it produces the same texture as the bagong liha. It's my own technique, to spray paint as far as 8+ inches away from shell.
Try the "So Close and Too Far" procedure on the old newspaper first to get the feel of the grainy result. Make sure you let the paint really dry up so you can feel the "grain" or gaps in between these tiny gangs of paint.
If your top coat kasi is solid na agad, logically, solid onto solid does not produce fibrous band. I saw on Discovery Channel how helmets are made. The shell kasi is not super shiny after it is formed on to mold. In ceramics, naman, sanding is done to eliminate slight imperfections but not to procude a perfectly solid and shinny surface.
Come to think of it, buga nalang din dapat sa old helmets if that's the case, diba? But the adhesiveness quality of the original paint has degraded inside - kaya - if you desire durability or longer life of your project, you sand off the original paint on the old shell (or anything).
Lihain pa ba (2+ yo helmet)?
Now, its a personal decision that if you have used your helmet for 2-3 years and you want to give it another fresh outer look, siguro, just paint over without sanding nalang. Anyways, the inner pads etc will flat out and corrode sooner than your new paint job.
C'mon, the porma of the shell alone may be outdated na by the time you give it another birthday. For beanies or novelty type of helmets, siguro, dapat paint over without sanding nalang.
It's matter of personal preference. Again, the liha part is the most time consuming of all steps and can leave you so impatient, tired and so frustrated and would want to leave you cursing and cursing to death that you should have not started the project in the first place. :D
Also consider, it's hard to reach the curves leading to the rubbery parts of the helmet. Kaya from original black to red? Think again, baka yung singit singit e black parin... :o
TriFlector September 4th, 2007, 10:31 AM up up up... maganda kung may mga ipost dito na designs... heheh
Sobra hirap ng ibang designs. Kaya yung post ko simple lang. Isa pang issue, sticker ba o paint to do the job. :o
I have so much admiration and respect to those who did the sticker designs we see on jeepneys. I think they're the most creative people because they've come up with intricate details using one of the most difficult to manage materials.
Yung final execution, halos mag give up nako...

@acidbeam - thanks to you and to those who liked my post. Affordable kikay solutions. :L

Jesterxrm September 12th, 2007, 11:40 AM ok...just read the feedback on sanding sir, thanks for your inputs.
new question - wouldn't a few grams be added on the weight of the helmet if we didn't sand it and applied paint?

. . peace. . .
pagi November 6th, 2007, 07:01 PM Nice job, but just a friendly advise. Painting the shell of the helmet would dramatically decrease its integrity. Better not expect for it to protect your head as it should. Paints are corrosive and abrasive.
