what's a better riding jacket than mesh type? i currently have joe rocket ballistic mesh type... kapag nag north expressway ako (o kahit around manila streets lang)... nangingitim yung shirt ko sa loob dahil sa dumi at pollution... although i like the mesh type dahil hindi mainit especially when your cruising na... but then lahat nga lang ng dumi ay kumakapit ...

is there any type of jacket that doesn't make you sweat?

Umm.... kahit walang jacket papawisan ka rin naman sa Manila. There's always a compromise when choosing a riding jacket. It's a toss up between comfort and protection. More often than not the more protection you get, the hotter and more uncomfortable the riding apparel will be. Mesh jackets are nice and comfy for our weather but the extent to which it can protect your skin in the event of an accident is definitely limited. Textile jackets might be something you want to look into. They're made of "breathable" material yet still have adequate weather protection. They're cooler than full-leather coats but don't have the contant ventilation as on mesh jackets.

My final unsolicited advise? Don't ride in your work/nice clothes. Wear a cheap t-shirt under your jacket when out riing and just bring a change of clothes with you. It's going to be a hassle to have to change shirts when you arrive at your destination (especialy if you're going on a date or an important meeting) but at least you can be sure that you won't be smelling like sweat and don't have nicotine-like stains all over your creased shirt.

i think joe rocket has other materials in their textile line... try the jackets with rock tex... i think it's not mesh type.

Rocktex, Ballistic, Cordura, etc... basta yung gawa sa tela na hindi mesh-type or leather, textile ang tawag doon.

Here's something about textile jackets:

Motorcycle Jacket Center - Jacket Ventilation

The Textile motorcycle jacket is the answer for hot summer riding. They are ventilated and offer near leather jacket protection but stay much cooler. There are many different brands and models out there that offer these jacket features, you must compare them all to see which suits your needs. Some offer better protection during a fall, and others keep you much cooler in a hot summer day.

Ventilation is probably one of the most important priority when it comes to summer riding. Outside temperatures of 90-95 Degrees can boost up to 110-115 Degrees in a leather jacket. Jackets with ventilation can decrease temperatures dramatically. When riding in the summer, you want to stay as cool as possible, that way you can concentrate more on the road than on the weather. Ventilated motorcycle jackets also comes with the correct body armor. Armors usually located on the elbows, chest, shoulders and spinal areas.

Motorcycle riders recommend wearing a long sleeve under the ventilated motorcycle jackets. This makes a big difference in comfort, especially when its really hot you do not want your bare skin touching the jacket which can make any rider feel really uncomfortable. The cotton from your long sleeve shirt will also absorb your perspiration and then allow it to evaporate. You'll still be really hot but atleast comfortable.

There are a lot of ventilated motorcycle jackets out there. Some of the popular ventilated motorcycle jackets are the Joe Rocket Phoenix Textile Jacket, The Joe Rocket Nova Textile Jacket and The Alpinestars Vent Jacket. When choosing a motorcycle jacket, remember that the fit is always more important than looks. You need a motorcycle jacket that fits you snug, preventing your body armor to flap or move around.

I personally have the Frank Thomas Sonic textile jacket for daily commute. Should have waited for the 2nd crop of jackets because mine is extremely poorly ventilated. The next ones have bigger and more vents. But I am not complaining. It has served me well in crashes.

For Joe Rocket Textile jackets, check this link:

I have also seen Alpine Star textile jackets that look pretty well ventilated.

Dainese, and AGV also have good textile jackets.

Guys you should check out the Moto-Connection.com website in the USA they have this one body armor made by Team Apex that is pretty cool looking I know the Super Motard racers wear it and not a bad price and it is actually secured and doesn't roll like the standard body armors that is in the leather and textile jackets. I got mine for $189.00 not bad TTYL

single lining body armor on the outside, plain long sleeve shirt on the inside. that's probly the best comfort and protection you'll get under the hot manila weather and pollution.

the long-sleeved T inside the armor or jacket may make you feel hot but it actually makes you feel more comfortable because it absorbs perspiration so the armor/jacket doesn't stick on your skin.

smaller bikes should avoid major thoroughfares like EDSA (or the HIGHWAYS) because PUV drivers (even the OTHER drivers) don't see you immediately, they ignor you, or they just plain don't respect you... plus PHYSICS could work against you - AIR STREAM - when a large, solid body passes a smaller body, air stream is produced and this could either push you on the sidelines or suck you into the stream...

for big bikes, I learned that using EDSA (or the Highways) offer better safety for me because I can see the vehicles much better, unlike in interiors where other road-users (read: vehiles like cars, tricycles, etc and pedestrians) just pop-out of nowhere... unpredictable and small maneuvering spaces... of course, this goes without saying that using major thourougfares require TRAINING, nerves of steel, and absolutely tip-top presence of mind.

errr... but if you dont want to collect smog on your shirt, which is wowiesy's concern, i'd still say avoid edsa even if you're on a big bike. for example, i live in qc. when i want to get to makati, i would rather take the ortigas-wilson-shaw-nuevedepebrero route rather than edsa. lesser volume on the road equates to lesser smog you collect on your shirt. before you leave, plan your trip first and think of the possible alternative side streets route yo ucan take.

rgon: Action Hobbies - Petron Greehills EDSA, forgot the phone number but you can't miss that; i think they use to call that GATE 5...

litlebadboy: agreed 200% with the planning part (and of course, the other parts of the post as well :R )... smog & dirt & the filthy smoke on our clothes are realities we have to face... which makes me agree with a friend's comment: the motorcycle should be considered as a secondary transport IF ONE CAN AFFORD that... simply because of the dirt & smell issues... but hey, if our clients don't mind the road smell, go for it :) ...

this is actually an issue i am trying to grasp. i mean i like to ride my bike going to client meetings in the corporate jungle, but corporate decorum dictates business clothes (i.e. the obligatory barong or shirt, (jacket), tie)... i'm looking at possible jackets that won't crease my shirts and keep away dirt as well, still 'appear' fresh when i arrive in my meetings... well, you can't have your cake and eat it, too ( i guess). :{

stay cool
