ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Wear crash helmet, yes, but show your faces.
Chief Insp. Antonio Clarito, chief for operations of the city police, has expressed support for Councilor Asbi Edding’s proposal banning helmets that reveal only the eyes of the motorist.

The proposal banning sports helmet came following the murder of lawyer Segundo Sotto last week in Barangay Sta. Maria by two motorcycle-riding gunmen wearing helmets showing only their eyes.

Witnesses could not describe the suspects.

Clarito said Edding’s proposal is a crime deterrent. He said witnesses to a crime committed by motorcycle-riding gunmen would not have difficulties describing the suspects if Edding’s proposal is approved.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has imposed a regulation mandating motorcycle riders to use crash helmets.

Supt. Mario Yanga, city police chief, strictly enforced the helmet rule at the beginning of his term. Many have been booked and fined for violating the LTO regulation.

The latest helmets, however, such as those worn by the killers of Sotto, cover the motorists’ face but for the eyes.

That is such a sorry excuse for a retarded, unimaginative lack of creative ideas to combat crime. Pity the society with police officers who have such restricted and narrow-minded ideas.

That's a pity.

If I wanted to kill someone, no stupid helmet law would prevent me from doing just that... I'd just shoot him from behind the heavily-tinted, blacked-out windows of a car.

first impression : UNFU...NGBELIEVABLE

first the (luckily dismissed ) passenger riding ban in Quezon and now this, what's gonna be next???

Going off on a tangent here, since it has been proven that some politicians are crooks, why not ban politics???:D

Crazy!!! That's the word! I agree with all the points you guys stated.
My job makes me frequently visit the region.
I'll try and take this up with them when I go visit Zambo. next week on the way to Basilan. In the meantime, for the sake of the motorcycle- riding Chavacano, let's hope the proposal doesn't prosper or the mayor vetoes it.
And yes, a favor, we can try help improve the image of Mindanao. Zamboanga is just one of the cities in that big island. Let's be specific and help not to generalize the situation. This can cause of bad publicity. Bad conditions in one area are often times erroneously portrayed to reflect the whole island (especially in the media). There are a lot of lovely and peaceful places to visit in Mindanao, lots of wonderful people, tribes and culture- truly Filipino. Believe me, there are more trees and flowers, scenery and landscape than guns and bullets in Mindanao.

Keep our helmets on all the time - long trip, short trip, good trip, bad trip, as soon as you sit in that saddle. I remember an ad on the road. "Careful Daddy. We're waiting home for you." ;)

What if the biker is not rich and has spent most of his savings on a full face helmet, does this mean that the option left is to 'hack saw' his full face helmet in half?

All bikers are good looking but not all bikers are killers. Will they allow bikers wearing half face helmets with ski mask on?

Wot can I say.....

The helmet law is one step in the right direction only to be used as an escape goat by the narrowminded twats?
Why not just pass a law that enable the public to kick the bollocks off the twats!
Well, come to think of it, it's easier to blame something than to get to the source of the problem in the first place. Yeeehaaaaaa!!! instant solution.. NOT!

A very valid point Chief. I am convinced that Davao if safer than Manila and 100% sure that drivers and riders in Davao are far more law abiding. One City in Davao coming up with life threatening rules should not be allowed to reflect on other cities.

The PNCC has already made the Philippines the joke of the international riding comunity.
