They have a point. Soak in engine oil first (I use SAE 90), run for a while to shake off the fling, then wax it.
Works great. You have the perfect lubrication right in between the links, and the wax will keep it sealed in and keep your chain cleaner longer.
Then you get the best of the old and new techniques.

Im from UK also, 6 years in Philippines. Guys on this forum are great and will always try to help. Good luck in your search for chainwax.
Most "hard to get" items are available along 10th Ave in Caloocan. If you get chance to go to Manila, stock up on some, as out in the provinces, you may be out of luck.

After further testing, the Motul Chain lube (P450 from Tres Hermanas) works great on its own, without applying heavy oil to the chain first.
Remove the chain, submerge it in kerosene in a tray, and go at it with an old toothbrush.
Hang up to dry...thoroughly (make sure all kerosene is gone from inside rollers and links). Wipe it down with a clean cloth.
I hung mine on top of the cyclone garden fence, a nail will do the job also. Then grab the bottom and lift it so the chain is as horizontal as you can get it.
Spray the motul all over it, lifting the bottom of the chain to the top to work the oil into the links, and let it hang again for 15 mins.
The thin oil will now work its way into the rollers and links, then sets to a greasy consistency.
Put the chain back on the bike, ride for a few km to fling off excess, wipe the excess off the swingarm/chainguard and your done.
Works great.
