"GO BRITISH AIRWAYS "
As we know, we see discrimination in some form or another almost everyday and often times it leaves a sour taste in our mouths. The following story shows us the side of diversity that we are all working for. It is a pleasant twist to see that there are companies and individuals who face discrimination head on, if only one small step at a time - but still enforce the right for every human being regardless of race, colour, creed or religion to have equality in life. Enjoy reading the positive side of diversity... I applaud British Airways for their action in this situation on a British Airways flight from Johannesburg, it shows there really are good honest people in this world.
A middle-aged, well-off white South African Lady has found herself sitting next to a black man. She called the cabin crew attendant over to complain about her seating: "What seems to be the problem Madam?" asked the attendant. "Can't you see?" she said " You've sat me next to a kaffir. I can't possibly sit next to this disgusting human. Find me another seat!"
"Please calm down Madam." the stewardess replied. "The flight is very full today, but I'll tell you what I'll do - I'll go and check to see if we have any seats available in club or first class." The woman cocks a snooty look at the outraged black man beside her (not to mention many of the surrounding passengers).
A few minutes later the stewardess returns with the good news, which she delivers to the lady, who cannot help but look at the people around her with a smug and self satisfied grin : "Madam, unfortunately, as suspected, economy is full. I've spoken to the cabin services director, and club is also full. However, we do have one very nice seat in first class."
Before the lady has a chance to answer, the stewardess continues .."It is most extraordinary to make this kind of upgrade, however, and I have had to get special permission from the captain. But, given the circumstances, the captain felt that it was outrageous that someone be forced to sit next to such an obnoxious and uneducated person therefore he has given his full approval for such a seat change to occur."
With which, the stewardess turned to the black man sitting next to the woman, and said : "So if you'd like to get your things, Sir, I have your new seat ready for you ...
At which point, apparently the surrounding passengers stood and gave a standing ovation while the black guy walks proudly up to the front of the plane.

seven years i was based in NAIA and 2 years at the town office in makati. BA sent me to the UK for several trainings and had the best experience of my life in travelling.:C

I'm a poor man and has to settle for less, but in UAE's case, less is more. The service they provide is second to none. They have won airline of the year so many times, that says a lot. Before the flight, the captain will introduce himself and the his crew and tell which country they all came from.
A white person can be accused of being racist, but can a black person be accused of being racist? The answer is YES!
One thing is certain, it doesn't matter what nationality we all are, the sad fact is we are all RACIST!!
In the human history the whites enslaved the other races, especially the blacks. This is more remembered. Whites slavery happened too, even now.
Two friends, one Jamaican and a Nigerian were argueing what they should be called, a Negro or a Black person.
The Jamaican says, " I'd rather be called a Nergo, because Black is associated with everything that is bad!"
The Nigerian says, " I'd rather be called a black man because Negro is as insulting as being called a Nigger!"
I butted in and explained that they mean the same, one is in latin and the other is in english.. Guess what, they carried on argueing!:O
Over here, when they say Asians, they mean those that are from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, etc... ( we call them Bumbay )and those from the Far-east are all Chinese!
In the US Asians are from the Far-east and India, Pakistan, etc.. Muslims..
I hate the 'equal opportunity' questionaire that ask of your ethnic background. A list of Asian country will be listed but not the Philippines! I always put 'others'. It will also ask, "Do you consider yourself black or white?" This is simple, as far as I'm concern (after looking at my skin), if I'm not white therefore I'm black! Hmmm... is this the reason why i have not been successful in my job applications?:D

Here's my rant, some tourists from other places of the Philippines specially in Manila think IGOROTS are dirty, ignorant and "with tail" .... sometime they think that IGOROTS are uneducated and very dark ...... I'm an IGOROT myself, half Chinese and Half IGOROT but still IGOROT blood runs in my veins, I am hurt when sometimes I hear these ignorant tourists say "asan na mga IGOROT, asan buntot nila?" I encountered some tourists at Baguio Cathedral onetime and I heard them "asan buntot nila?" .... I approached them and say "kayo naman, pinapakita nyo lang na ignorante kayo! Ako igorot ako, baket?!?!" ..... they kept quiet and left the area. Another one when I was in Manila, when they knew that my sister was an igorot, they gathered around her and wondered ... "igorot ka pala, bakit amputi at ang ganda mo?" .... tsk tsk tsk ... ano yun? hindi mo alam kung matutuwa ka sa puri nila o insulto. :angry:
Not only black americans are sometimes discriminated from racists ...... we Igorots encounter here too .... specilly when tourists flock here in Baguio, you'll hear things that offend IGOROT tribes. :)
lovey December 18th, 2003, 03:23 AM In all fairness, if few co US residents can back me up on this, most of our applications here even from 5 years ago, the selection for race has choices that includes FILIPINO and ASIANS seperately.
That, I am proud to check, even though I may mark both or just one race I came from.
Bigotry and discrimination is still around. It is not as bad as before but it is still rampant in some countries.
In some countries, it is contained and illegal. In others, it is encouraged.
There are subtle way of racism too, I especially hear it from older generation, specifically, Asian culture. Wherein, they destest their children marrying an African-American descent. I usually keep my mouth shut on any comment I want to make on this aspect. I remind myself, they are from the older generation where that was the way. They do not disrespect them or dislike them as a person, they just rather not mix their bloodline with theirs. Sad.......but on most cases only time can change that. Time will eliminate that older generation and will improve the way we see and treat skin colors. I can always respect people's beliefs and ways, as long as it doesn't hurt another or me. But I expect them to respect mine too. If they rather not sit with a certain person, don't take it against me if I allow that person to sit by me.
I am optimistic with our future. It does get better when it comes to human understanding.

ei wolvie, i still remember a story before, about an igorot who went to eat in a restaurant in manila wearing the traditional "bahag" and tee-top... the poor guy sits there waiting for a waiter to get his order, but alas! nobody wants to serve him. feeling descriminated, he put a cigar in his mouth, pulled a new 100p bill, and used it to light his cigar.... i think you know the man, he owns a bus company in baguio.... forgot his name e.

At least Rob Schneider admitted that he has a Filipino blood and his mom is an Igorot.
In middle east I noticed that they have a high respect with their aborigines...... Once a Bedu (Arab Aborigine) complained about your service "khalas" you will be fired immediately. I noticed this happened in Dubai Airport, An old Arab sitting on the floor was is being driven away by an Indian Janitor, the Old Arab slapped the guy in the face, went to the managers office and complained the treatment he received from Indian Janitor. Right then and then the Indian Janitor was fired. That's an eye opener to me I never talked to an Old Arab without a translator otherwise I might be in Big Trobule
vanveen December 18th, 2003, 11:50 PM Do you really think that the Arab natives are held in high respect or is it that foriegn workers in Arabia are held in such low respect, here in north america we have various forms of prejudice, coming from everywhere, the natives here are held in low esteem as a group, but not individually, outright forms of racism are illegal, my wife is a philippina and she suffers from racism in her workplace, but no overt show of racism as that could lead to the person being fired, at the same time she has a racist attitude towards native peoples and east indians, again she has the right to feel whatever she wants but she cannot walk up to them and do anything that would be looked on as being racist as that is illegal and could lead to her arrest, although the only time I have ever heard of anybody being arrested for what they call hate crimes, is against the jewish people, mainly I believe as they have a very strong lobby group

Yes Arab Natives are given a high respect by their OWN LOCAL likewise high respect should be given by any foreign national in their country.... As much as possible they discourage inter-marriage with other nationals...You are also right that foreign workers in Arabia held such low respect especially if you are an Indian.....for Filipinos they will think twice because we have already created a trademark that we kill if we are mistreated (remember Sarah Balabagan and John Aquino). Arab nationals never shouted at me because they know I'm a Filipino....that's in UAE and I don't know in other mideast country
