Aside from helmets, what are the different types of protection gear? I've seen them (mostly from photos on this site) but I don't know what they're used for. Please enlighten me on this, I want to know how it is useful, there type, pros & cons, prices, and if there is a substitute. Like the backplates & kindney protection/or ???

which is a "must have" besided the helmet.

next na important ay yung gloves...kasi pag bagsak mo sigurado kamay gagamitin mo...next is elbow and knee pads...yung mga back protector and kidney protector usually ginagamit sa racing...

ey Brogger,

What kind of riding do you do? Are these protection for your usage? Kasi iba iba rin kung off road ka or on-road rider.

For me the basics are:
1. Helmet, preferably with eye protection(visor)
2. Gloves
3. Good pair of shoes:D :D
4. Jacket

aside from the helmet, the knee-shin guard and elbow guard are essential!
the back-pro is also important especially in aggresive riding and long trips.....
and don't forget the gloves....

before I used to ride a cb750 but never get the chance do long rides/out-of-town rides. Now Im back in Phils. I wanted to fulfill my dream of riding around luzon with my dream bike. So now im asking this question so that I can have an estimate on how much I would be spending on gears and the bike.

Could you please also include the brand names of these gears when you mention them.

well if you have the dough, might as well invest in a good helmet, at least DOT approved, SNELL even better...

a good riding jacket, mesh types are a hit here, due to our climate.... FIELDSHEER is great! then pair it up with the matching riding pants... since this pair of riding gear has the neccessary protection built in e.g elbow, knee, back guards.

also the boots and gloves.....

If you're low on budget, I recommend:
Zeus 508 Helmet:
Flip up chinguard keeps you cool at stops.
Tested. (Took my 1st spill Nov. 21. Xray and CT showed no damage.)
Cheap. (PhP 3.2k)

Komine Gloves
Cool (temp wise) compared to other gloves I tried.
Tested too.
Not too cheap. (PhP 2k)

Armored Jacket!!!
I wasn't wearing one and now I have to live with a sling for a while.

I was lucky according to the doc in that I did not have any major injuries.

maybe you've already heard about this one but there's a company in the US that sells a vest that has a cord attachment to the bike handlebar, like a kill switch on a jet ski. anyway, the instant you go down and get ejected off the bike, the vest rapidly inflates with air forming a thick cushion around your organs and around your neck. pretty neat stuff. can't remember the name, saw it on the discovery channel. they showed demos of a guy nailing a car and falling and you can see the vest inflate before the guy hits the ground. with the traffic in the philippines, I think this is a good investment!

I would say, a Back protector... You can break/dislocate your arms, legs, shoulder and ribs they will heal, but if break your back you be a vegetable or become a wheelchair rider! which do you prefer?

Next, sturdy leather boots without toe caps. If your unlucky enough to have your toes run over, the still plate will buckle and cut your toes!

maybe you should meet up with some groups on their EBs so you can see the gears yourself. Here's my gear and how much I acquired them.

Helmet:
HJC (P 3,500)
Balaclava (P 200)

Jacket:
Joe Rocket Phoenix Mesh Jacket with armour on vital areas (P 7,500)
i have to say fieldsheer is better money's worth and protection wise
Komine jackets are worth checking out too at Action Hobbies, Petron Station, Edsa, Greenhills

Gloves:
Spidi V-Race (around P 3,500 2nd hand)

Pants: don't have one yet but will have soon
Mesh with knee and shin protectors (P 7,500 approx for Joe Rocket)

Knee & Shin Protectors:
Fox (P 1,200) crash tested this... i'd say Komine is better at the same price

Boots:
Gaerne Tempest (P 5,200) available at Dreambikes

check out these links:
for gloves, jackets, pants and gloves:

for gloves:

Thanks!

Hiroki's wounds (all left side)
Broken shift lever
scratches on the fairing
scratches on the front fender
scratches on the footpegs (rider and backrider)
broken clutch lever (just the ball end)

The fairing sort of acted like a built in slider. It didn't crack, break or what-have-you. :D

Bragster was able to ride the bike home for me.

The only problem is that I'm off riding for about 6 to 12 weeks. :(

Things to do in the meantime:
1. Order new tires
2. Get a new helmet! (Zeus again!)
3. Get a riding jacket! (what's an affordable perforated leather jacket with armor?)
4. Get new levers
5. Repaint (I'm thinking a combo green-black-white)
6. Create Decals
7. Apply Clearcoat
8. Play MotoGP2 on my PC
9. Sit on Hiroki and/or Shiela and make VROOM VROOM sounds!

On the plus side, my sling is now off and I have use of both arms. I found this really cool clavicle brace that allows me to have full body movement while keeping my clavicle in a fixed position.

Glad to hear you're ok now and damages to you are just that. I've been following your posts because: (1) It's fun to know the adventures of a newbie or comeback rider; and (2) I like your bike.

For #3 on your list, I have to say that you shouldn't make tipid on this coz it protects your body. Joe Rocket and Fieldsheer mesh jackets are excellent. An alternative which costs less would be the jackets are Komine jackets at Ryan's place: Action Hobbies in Petron Greenhills.

Hope you'll get to ride again soon and I wish Hiroki would be up in tiptop condition soon.

Thanks. I'll try to keep posting. Right now I'm happy enough being able to type with both hands. Had a real hard time when I was still wearing the sling because I'm a touch typist. Trying to type with one hand while looking at the keyboard is just way beyond my abilities (reason why I haven't been posting for a while). It's so strange that when I look at a keyboard I can't seem to figure out where the right keys are but when have all fingers there everything seems to flow straight from my head to the screen. I guess that's what happens when you spend 20 years of a 32 year life with computers.

As for the jacket, I'm really interested in a perforated leather jacket. One of the models I'm interested in is the Alpinestar S-MX Aero which goes for about US$200.00. That would be about PhP 10k or so which is not too far off from the mesh jackets.

Here are the specs:
2-1.4mm premium fullgrain perforated leather for excellent abrasion resistance. • non water absorbing heavy mesh panels for ventilation. • patented external high-modulus thermoplastic protection on the shoulders
flexible molded collar with mesh ventilation • 1. • removable and breathable long sleeve liner with water-wind resistant 3-layer membrane • multiple stitched main-seam construction for maximum tear resistance • adjustable waist • ergonomically placed stretch Kevlarฎ and leather flex zones for optimal comfort and fit • 100% antibacterial poly-mesh lining • 3 internal pockets and 2 external pockets • embossed padding on the arms • aerodynamic back hump • connection zipper allows attachment to selected Alpinestars leather pants

When I was looking for a safety jacket with armours in all the right places for use on social rides under my casual jacket I came upon an idea to make my own.
1- get a cycling shirt, armours for Back with kidney belt, shoulder and elbow
2 - get someone to to sew velcro straps or pockets to attach the armours (useful to be able to remove the protectors from shirt for washing).
After I did the calculations, the cost is too much! I thought I have all the armours needed anyway so I'll just get the cycling shirt, but the shirt is expensive.
Then I saw a Dainese Safety jacket for half the price and got that instead.
Hmmm... I wonder if cycling pants with hip and knee armours works out cheap... Hey, that extra padding on the seat area of the pants will come handy on long rides. It might fry my family jewels though... yaikkkkkss.
Good thing about cycle clothing is they wicks out the moistures and keeps you cool on hot days it also keeps you warm on cold days.

Boylit... nice jacket....

Got myself a Komine mesh jacket for short in-town rides. It has plastic and foam combination armor on the shoulders, elbows, back and chest. Also includes a vest that can act as a windbreaker in colder temperatures (hmmm... a Baguio trip is in order). It has two layers of mesh: an outer polymesh and a coolmax mesh liner inside.

I tried wearing it and it fits me like a glove. Once on, none of the armor panels move around and are flush on my skin. The foam of the shoulder armor extends to my clavicle and the upper portion of the chest protector adds to the protection. My only problem with it is that it's all black. There are reflectors but I'd be happier if it were in a brighter color (none available at shop).

I'm seriously considering getting the matching pants when I'm ready to ride again.

I'm still in search of a perforated leather jacket for long rides, though. The S-MX Aero is still my first choice.

Bro, I use cycling shorts on long trips under my leathers... but only in cold weather. :D They do sell meshed biker shorts with hip, buttock/tailbone padding. I have one but its too bulky to use under the full leathers (overkill din eh). I rarely use it.

Back to the subject:

gloves, preferably ones that have wras around your wrists to keep them from sliding off

sturdy boots (not metal tipped as rightly expained by Botchix)

backprotector

knee pads

jacket (w/ armor on the right places)

basically what most everyone here said, I second the motion... hehe :D

Ang ganda naman ng Alpinestar S-MX. Saan ba nakakabili nyan? As long as your bike can go 60Kph and up it means puwede kang ma injure or worst matepok(knock on wood) duon. So protective gears is a must lalo na sa mga long and fast rides.

Meron kayang armored jacket na similar sa Alpinestar S-MX dito sa Pilipinas (Luzon)?

How about yung vest na pang Motocross? Ok kaya sa Road yun?

Sir boylit,

After your fell, did you have an armor in mind that could have saved your arm from being injured and could have prevented the result of the impact? Hope you could ride again soon.
