we have been hearing of TRB approving PNCC's petition for toll fare hike for the past two weeks, both in print and broadcast media.... we have been made aware that the new toll rates would be in effect at 12:01AM of December 1st....

today, i rode to pampanga via NLEX.... on the way back, i entered Tabang toll gate... paid the new toll rate of 9 pesos (used to be 7). as always, when riding my bike through the toll ways, i keep the receipt, in case of any untoward incidents...

unlike the slex, the nlex still uses stubs for their receipts. you get a stub on your entry and surrender half of it where you exit... so i kept my other half of the stub upon exiting at balintawak....

upon arrival at home, i checked my other half of the stub... stamped on it was 9.00... i thought that they were finishing up on the old stock of seven peso stubs... i would understand if the case was like that...

but lo and behold!!! upon careful examination of the stub, it showed another price... the stub reads TBG - BWK, and guess how much toll price it has printed on it....

TEN PESOS!!! it only means one thing... pncc already printed their stubs the amount they may have been petitioning.. in this case, ten pesos for the stretch of tabang to balintawak and vice versa...

TRB may have denied their original petition and only approved nine bucks for that stretch....

go figure...

I suppose they have to pay for the renovations to the NLEX. I wonder what the tolls wil cost when they are finished.

But what baffles me is the disparity in tolls on the SLEX. Nichols to Filinvest for example is P42, less of a distance than Filinvest to Calamba, which is over 20km, which costs only about P8 (or at least did until today).

I can see why the higher tolls would have been needed to fund the original renovation of the SLEX when the Skyway was built, but I don't understand why the cost was not spread evenly across the entire length of the SLEX instead of just 5 sectors.

I wrote to the PNCC once with this question and they said my enquiry had been forwarded to a "higher authority" but I never got a reply. Surely I can't have been the only one asking such an obvious question?

it's because the toll you pay for the five sectors go to skyway, while the toll you pay from susana all the way to calamba goes to pncc proper... there are technically two tollway operators at slex...

i am not really complaining about the toll rate increase, though i have some questions in my mind, but what really bothers me is the propensity of pncc printing ticket stubs that reflected their petitioned toll hike even before it was approved by the trb....
