Where can I buy these "metal" backpacks for motorcyclists? I know I saw a few people using those.

I don't know if those are some sort of metal or just fiber painted to look shiny. But they are effective in the sense that your things are well protected in there when it rains, because unlike conventional backpacks, those metal backpacks are rain-proof since they are not made of cloth.

I don't wanna carry conventional backpacks around my back because if it rains while I'm riding, then all the things in there are gonna get wet! So I need to find these rain-proof and shatter-proof backbacks tailored specifically for motorcyclists!

Thanks for any help you may provide!

Metal backpacks? Are you refering to the semi-plastic/semi-cloth Boblbee backpacks? You can get them at Outdoor and sporting goods stores locally. There are also Boblebee imitation bags that sell for almost half the price of the originals but the quality is almost the same. Clench is one of the clone brands. IIRC they're available at SportsHouse.

When I was in Manila last year, I saw one in that outdoor shop inside the quad parking building. I remember there was a True Value hardware across it.

Alright!! Big thanks to you GSChan! The ones I saw before where very shiny--maybe they were painted silver by their owners, which is why I thought they were some sort of metal.

Now, the next challenge is to look for one. :D

Are they still in fashion in the Philippines?

Burnout
November 2nd, 2003, 11:31 PM
Gaijin, you mean Quad in Mkti??? Are you serious?? Boy I haven't been there for like YEARS! I've been spending a lot of my time in other malls nowadays.

Btw, if there are other malls you guys could recommend aside from Glorieta, you'd be really helpful. So that I can have alternative options in case they don't sell those anymore there.

I think this is the one I saw someone was using. And as you can see it's really metallic!

Burnout,

Try contacting our new forum member larryf8. His brother owns one of those outdoor shops in the mall and IIRC he also carries Boblebee prodcuts. I'm sure they'll be able to hook you up with something.

It's used to hold shoes or water bottles. It can even be used to carry a rolled up jacket. Come to think of it, you can carry almost anything that fits in that space.

oh now i get it. i used to think of it as a camping bag for that area to hold rolled-up mats. But when i read that is also good for motorcycling it made me wonder what that part got to do with biking :D thanks for the enlightenment!

question. are these things waterproof or just water resistant?

rem
November 3rd, 2003, 05:22 PM
hi guys! the design of the boblbe-e bags are made so as to have some lumbar protection when walking. hiking, or even biking/riding. it helps to balance the weight you carry.

as for it's shatter-proof-ness :D i really don't think it's shatter proof since it is made of fiber glass material.

for the avilability you can try dreambikes in alabang, ive seen a couple of them. i think the average price is 4-4.5K

HTH

ps: gschan,
that's a nice VESPA bag :D :D :D

There's a shop at Taft near EDSA selling Boble-E bags for only 2,800.00. Will be getting one as soon as I get a chance to drop by there.

Taft near Edsa?? Where is that? I don't get it. Do you mean Taft Ave. in Pasay City?

P2,800 is a pretty good price by the way!

I meant Taft Avenue but since that road is long, I just gave EDSA as a point of reference.

Just FYI, orig Boblbe-e bags sell between 4-4.5k at the local shops that I've been to. The Clench replicas sell for 3k. There are cheaper imitations but they're less rigid and the quality isn't that great. The fiberglass/plastic is thin, they've got sharp/rough edges, and the retaining straps/buckles look flimsy and won't hold the bag securely especially while riding. FWIW there's a guy selling these bags over at the classified ads section here on MCP. I don't know who he is but his prices seem fair... if not better than retail. HTH.

FYI, I was going through "bidshot.com" and found the said bag being sold for PHP3,000.00. ;)

They have a website Safer Philippines (http://www.saferphilippines.com). I've inquired about the Boblebe-e bag and they say it costs Php2,500.00. I don't know if these are imitations as they have their own website. Sabi kasi nung kakilala ko malamang imitations kasi nga un kanya costs 4-5K yata. What do you think? They also sell self-defense products like stun guns, telescopic batons, pepper sprays, etc.

GSChan
November 4th, 2003, 07:44 PM
Most probably imitation bag lang yun.

FWIW, I too was searching for a Boblbe-e bag a couple months back. Buti na lang di na ako bumili. For the same price you should just get yourself a decent magnetic tank bag or a set of panniers. Less hassle when riding in heavy traffic especially if you ride with safety gear (ex. padded jacket) all the time.

i know someone who uses that kind of pack, the only thing that he doesn't like is that, your helmet and the top of the back pack touches each other, and it makes him very uncomfortable. but his bike is a gsx so probably if you ride a scooter it wont matter

I'm not really in a rush to buy these things. Actually, I have lots of other priorities at the moment. I just want to have an idea where these bags are being sold, so that I will know where to get them once I'm ready.

guys,

try to check Alabang town center , the shop which sells Vespa Scoots, they also sell these bags, they have the asian sizes too, it is smaller than the ones you usually see. I think the retail is Php 3,500.00 per piece.

I've had my Boblbee back-pack for 2 years now. It has survived rain, hail, 2 low sides and countless miles of riding.

I don't think it is shatter proof but it is shatter resistant. Tried and tested... the back pack came out with just a superficial scratch.

I don't think it is water proof but it is water resistant. I've ridden it through light showers and medium sized downpours. I don't know if it will survive a full downpour like what you guys have their in Manila.

I use it for my daily commute to work. It also serves as my back protector when I commute. It has contoured paddings for the back. It does not get in the way of my helmet or my ability to turn my head. Make sure you adjust its hang height properly. It may however scratch your seat cowl cover.. luckily, my seat cowl is not a cover but a seat.

The funny-looking tail section of the pack serves a purpose. You can stuff shoes, garments, even a basketball or spare helmet on that recessed-curved area... as long as you have the straps.

The Boblbe pack comes with a lot of peripherals and accesories to suit your needs. I just have the basic, stock model... which is good enough for my needs. I have carried and lugged an assortment of stuff in it. However, it will not fit a 15 inch screen lap-top. But I don't have one anyway.

Though the price is a bit hefty ($200), I am satisfied. It has served me well for these past two years and will continue to do so... hopefully for 3 or 4 more years to come.

It is so rare to see these kinds of back packs on the road... even here. People always joke and ask if I have some kind of rocket booster or parachute on my back. :D

When I do get to see someone with a Boblbee pack, I quickly try to catch up with that rider and say hello and point out to his back-pack, smile and give the thumbs up sign.

Yup... these packs are one of a kind. They may not be the best, but they certainly are unique. It always makes me smile when I see someone else with it.

Cheers. :)

Yan ang weakspot... the cover. But the new ones are coming out with a stronger, canvass type cover.

Apparently, Hollywood thinks these bags are very futuristic looking cuz I've seen these used in sci-fi TV shows like "Star Trek Enterprise". I was just watching Star Trek one night, and they had this episode with Starfleet Marines wearing these packs on their backs.

Can a laptop fit inside? ( I have an IBM T20 that I carry with me all the time). I am currently using an Oakley backpak but it will not protect my laptop at all in case of a lowside, and of course rain.

I know someone who can sell me this kind of bag at a cheaper price.

I'm planning to buy one. Maybe we can make a list and have an order for the quantity so that we can gat a bigger discount. They also deliver, depending on the quantity we order.

So what do you say?

I'm not familiar with the IBM T20 but mine fits a Compaq 15inch lap top but only if you put it in diagonally. :( This is its big drawback. Not laptop friendly fit. :( :(
