The explosive growth of the Apple iPod music devices in the Philippines has prompted accessory maker Belkin to introduce a bevy of products for the iPod market.
The US-based firm’s accessory lines include attachable iPod microphones, FM radio tuners and transmitters, car chargers and cradles, among others.
Belkin directly competes in the iPod accessory business with Targus and Griffin, both of which have local distributors.
Belkin also partnered with hardware distributor Microwarehouse to supply its products nationwide.
Incidentally, Microwarehouse is one of the biggest distributors of Apple products, from notebooks, software to iPod music players.
Belkin’s entry into the country also signals the company’s intention to target a wide variety of other products outside the accessory market.
Belkin Asia Pacific Sales Director Louis Lye said the iPod accessory market is just a step for Belkin since it would be introducing a slew of peripherals and network devices in the coming months.
He said among the products that the company would be bringing in include wireless networking access points, surge protectors and desktop computer peripherals.
“The introduction of our products will happen in the following months but right now we’re more focused on our accessory business,” Lye said.
Despite the lack of specific figures on the size of the iPod market in the Philippines, Lye said the company will be banking on word-of-mouth reputation of their iPod accessories, which he hopes would carry over to the other products they would soon introduce.
“The idea is to make Belkin as much as a fashion product as possible. Once we have the brand equity, we’ll be able to have leverage when we sell our networking and computer peripheral products,” Lye said.
