Last night I saw a friend wearing a mc hard plastic backpack. He told me he bought it in SM for P2500. I asked him what is it for. He said he uses it for safety in case he falls, his back will be protected.
Will it really protect your back?
I have fallen 3 times seriously in my bike and have never fallen backwards. Always frontwards or sidewards.

@maskman....if you really want to protect your back in case of a spill, use backprotectors....just as Payon Hunter said...those things will protect what you place inside but not the rider....it may even be the cause of your injury....

nope not exactly protect the user, but the contents, i could give a bit of protection since nasa likod mo, but however it doesnt guarantee anything, it could be more harmful though if you would think it. use back protectors instead. :)

Wow, another gadget to wear. Ayoko na. 20 years na ako experience in bike city driving, I've never fallen in my back. Helmet is enough for me.
I was just curious about the backpack thing.
Thanks guys!

I think the bag is more to protect the contents as well :D

Now regarding the back protector... Racers use these kind of things as well... it really is for safety. Notice how despite such terrible spills at high speeds how the riders just seem to miraculously get up as if nothing happened... Ofcourse the fact that it looks "maporma" is added bonus :)

But the reality of it is you have to find the balance of safety and convenience that you are comfortable with... with city driving I guess it is "overkill". But for long trips and especially for racing I think it's worth the investment. If you drive at crazy speeds with in the Metro... then maybe it's worth it. Or if you're still a newbie rider then think safety first.

Ofcourse "another" piece of equipment to lug around is sobrang hassle.. just putting on gloves, balaclava, helmet then glasses before and after each ride takes several minutes... now imagine strapping on the super kevlar vest and making sure it's in position... then lugging around the city (yikes).... yan lang ang gusto ko sa cage... just open the door, get in, and drive.

Agree ako sa yo sir na most falls would be forward and sideways, but when a rider goes flying forward, you don't know how one is going to land. A friend of a friend landed on the 2nd story somewhere in Baclaran. And even violently rolling on the ground could be dangerous to the back if it twists the wrong way. Ofcourse worst case scenario lang naman ang mga ito.

Basta for all, remmeber that "secondary safety" lang ang mga protectors. if you can avoid the accident in the first place then that's the best! Ride Safe mga bro :)

I cannot imagine myself spilling with that bag at my back, it can get worse than you're not wearing one at the back, can't it?

You've never fallen in your back? good for you though. If you fall like that, you might injure your spine. and if it does, it's bye bye motorcycling.

it may... or it may not... wanna try it? I have one at home. joke
if I assume it... when you fall wearing one, you can strain your back area (the corners), but it may (it may) protect you from spine injury because of the flat back... hell, who knows?! I don't want to try it though. :D

Better be safe than sorry. Back protector for your back, hard bag for your things. Parang coffee mate din yan.

I heard from a guy who is riding for about 11 years that : backpacks in general when riding will cause the body to "roll" more in a crash, and the more number of "rolls" the more dangerous the crash. The safest way to crash is when your sliding through the pavement/road just like what you always see in motoGP's.

Personally, soft backpacks I imagine will have less effect on the the body in a crash than a hard shell or plastic backpack thus making them safer. And imagine having a hard object on your back and you fell back first, I would imagine that the neck or the backbones will snap.

Just wanna share something ;)
