Hi guys!
I'll be buying my 1st helmet soon, and I'm just wondering- if a full face helmet is safer than a modular, why do people still buy it? What are it's advantages?
Mine will be used for city/daily riding only, what should I get?
Thanks!

modular helmet is the way to go for city driving which fortunately is advantageous especially during hotspots(traffics)... easily opens (no need to remove the whole helmet) for more vents.

Full-face Helmets is very suitable for long rides and if you're into gauges as well.

Both of them are safe just make sure to buy those that are certified by DOT, SNELL (the least).

I have those two.... fullface helmet for long-rides and modular helmet whenever I go to work. Still its your choice. HTH

i think it would be best to buy a helmet that would suit your needs, as 2Ti said... modulars are best for city driving because of the safety and comfort they bring. i myself bought a zeus modular, why? i always ride on the city with speeds anywhere from 30 kph to 60 kph, traffic? yes... so the flip up design of the modular is best compared to a fullface, it easily gives access for air to come in, making me comfy during stops, modulars are also best for riders who wear focals. as for certifications, modulars are DOT certified only, i doubt it if it would be SNELL certified because of the two piece design. now if you frequent slt, nlt, edsa... long highways or long high speed drives, you'll be better off wearing a fullface on your head. you won't enjoy a modular at speeds higher than 80 kph.... they tend to whistle:O . honestly.
goodluck on your choice... btw i am not promoting zeus but i heard that they also manufacture helmets for axo, so i guess zeus gives one of the best bang for the buck:C

Modular helemts are safe as long as they are certified and you don't leave the chin bar of the modular flipped up when riding. Modular is also full-face helmet. Both of them have the shield/visor covering your face.

full-face helmets will still be the best to buy because of the safety factor. modulars have hinges that can/might break upon impact. half-face have the least protection of the three. if you have a tight budget and you can only afford one helmet, buy the full-face (with dot and snell approval).

modulars are good for smokers... puff..puff..
but i would suggest you get yourself a good full face helmet, it's better to have it when you need it.
you dont need to get up your speed, or go on a long ride to have the necessity for a full face.. for most motorcycle related accidents happen within our local streets. better get the best protection. well, just my 2 cents.

Bottomline is -- Modular or Fullface helmets are ok if you use them properly. They may or may not save your life depending on the gravity of the accident. It may or may not protect your cranium whether it is DOT/SNELL approved or not. But they sure look good on you!

Thanks! When I got my Modular helmet (HJC Sy-max) around 5 years ago, first thing my veteran rider friend told me was to change it to a 'real' full-face helmet because he said, 'modular helmets don't have the same protection as full face helmets.' Since you'll be using it for city/daily riding a modular helmet should suffice.
Here are advantages:

Perfect if you ride with sunglasses on or wear prescription glasses
If you have to get off your ride and back frequently, it saves you from taking off the helmet to cool off.
Cools off your face while waiting at stoplights.
Lifts up easily when security guards asks for a 'face behind the helmet'=b

Disadvantages:

As mentioned, less protection
Moving parts prone to break
Tempting to lift up while riding, esp if you're a smoker (its a no-no :D )

maganda ang modular if you're not familiar sa pupuntahan mo...kasi unlike fullface helmets...kahit angat mo yung visor hindi ka pa madinig ng kausap mo when asking for directions...while sa modular i-angat mo lang ok na...

ok din siya when you need to fill-up at the gasoline station...hindi mo na kailangan tanggalin ang helmet mo.

may nakita nga ako kanina sa mercury, naka zeus 508(?) modular... hindi na niya tinanggal ang helmet niya...

but i wont recommend it sa mga long rides...although marami ako nakikita na ito ang gamit eh mahirap pa rin kasi for mukhang kalas ang harapan nito on a hard impact.

Why do Riders buy a modular helmet, no matter what brand it is!

IMHO modular type helmet provides:

comfort riding
better than halface helmet
easy to speak when its needed (e.g. NLEX trafic enforcer)
smokin' (me - ocassionaly)
riders using eye glasses
safe helmet (DOT, ECE, SNELL etc.)
etc...

Lets all wear our beloved HELMET...:)

kaya binibili ng people ang modular kasi, kung safety rin lang ang paguusapan, safe naman ang modular... mas safe nga lang ang full face. either way, safe parin ulo mo as long as long as your helmet is of good quality. irregardless of brand.

I suggest you get both..

pero its a matter of your choice lang talaga.. suggestion lang.. hihihi

someone showed me his HJC modular (kalimutan ko model) after sumemplang sya and had a face plant...ang lalim ng mga gasgas sa front ng helmet/shield, di naman bumukas. In fact I saw him again riding with a new HJC modular. :)

most of the pics na nakikita ko of european MC police wear modular helmets too. i doubt kung papasa sa scrutiny nila kung hindi safe.

siguro depende rin sa brand.

The bottomline, pag pasado pareho sa safety standards, is the fashion sense.
Sino mas magandang graphics? Bagay ba ang kulay sa motor o jacket ko? Whatever makes me look good, dun ako. That's why i own modular, full face and cruiser helmets.

kahit dito po sa pinas, yung mga pulis ng NLEX naka Zeus 508w na white. I saw them po nung nagrespond sila sa isang accident few weeks ago.

though i agree sa sabi ng iba na pag looong rides, or pag tulad ngayong umuulan, go for full face lids...

good day all.
i use both, a modular helmet (fulmer afm modus) and a fullface helmet
(zeus 803). both are dot/ece compliant. in terms of safety, i think the
fullface would be best and the modular would be second-best, so either
one would suit me just fine for my rides/commutes. but if i were going
racing i would certainly need a fullface helmet.
the big difference, i think, would be convenience. there are some situations
when i find the modular more convenient than a fullface, such as, when
asking directions from a pedestrian or greeting a friend or scratching my
nose or drinking from a squeeze bottle, which i can do without taking off
the modular helmet.
it all boils down to your choice or preference really.
ride safe. always.
regards,
elmerg

Each type has their own advantages/disadvantages

Fullface
+ most protection as it covers your entire head
+ less noise
+ lighter than modular helmets usually
- can get uncomfortable when its hot
- sometimes unconvenient for people with eyeglasses

Open face or Jet helmet
+ most comfortable especially during summer
+ lightweight
+ least expensive usually
- less protection

Modular
+ combines some features of both fullface and jet
+ convenient for people with eyeglasses
+ most practical
- heavier than full face usually
- can be noisy due to more moving parts on the helmet

Any helmet is fine and if you have all three types for different occasions, even better. Helmets that are certified by DOT (USA), ECE 22.05 (EU), ACU Gold (UK), or Snell (USA) would be an advantage.

I've tried my brother' modular helmet... and I still needed to remove my glasses before putting the helmet on... so i'm wondering what is the benefit of modular for those wearing glasses?

Also I normally wear a balaclava when I ride... does that "cancel" the benefits of th emodular design? Eh kasi when you open the helmet naka mask ka pa. So parang sayang lang.

I've only tried the modular once, so my assumptions could be wrong... then again, that's why i'm "asking" kung tama ang assumptions ko more then "saying" :D

To anwser the first post,Yes. Modular helmets are less suprerior on frontal protection in comparison with full face helmets. But,using a modular helmet doesnt necessarily mean a compromised safety. A normal human brain can only aborsob 150G's (during deceleration). Anything above that you get injuries such as contusions, concussions, and above 200 G's you start to see more serious injuries worst death and thats neither the shell or the chin guard even starts to brake. However there's nothing wrong on maximixing safety, use Fullface specially if you riding aggressively.

i wear prescription glasses and i use zeus508w and i don't need to take off my glasses when wearing it.

if you wear balaclava, flipup the chin bar then pull down the balaclava to expose your whole face. no need to remove your helmet and remove your balaclava. done this on checkpoints when i was required to.

the joints and locking assembly should at least resist the maximum average impact rating which i think is considered by the helmet manufacturers on modulars. though, there is always a tendency to accidentaly unlock or be unbolted in mc mishaps. this is why the full face is more advisable in aggressive riding and racing because it has a lesser tendency to be dismantled or opened in extreme situations.

most of my shades fits in my full face btw. the modulars are a bit more expensive than its full face counter parts for zeus at least. that's why got my full face. hth=b

for me its versatility primarily especially in an urban/suburban setting.

and also modulars are not very common especially in the province so there's the novelty coolness factor going on there (at least for me). oh how 'cool' it was the first time I had flip the lid and show my mug without removing the entire helmet

i do agree that quality full face helmets are still the best for long distance riding.
