First, Australia is a BIG country and sparsely populated. Our big island is about 4,100km east to west and 3,200km north to south. It has about the same area as continental USA or the whole of Europe, but a population of only about 20 million people. On some of our main highways it is not uncommon to travel 200km or 300km without seeing a single building (or any other traffic sometimes).

For a tourist to ride a motorcycle in Australia, they must hold a current foreign drivers license that allows them to ride the same type of motorcycle in their home country. An international drivers license is not required in Australia.

The wearing of Australian approved motorcycle helmets is compulsory in Australia. Suitable helmets are normally available when you rent a bike or you may purchase your own in Australia. The cost for an Australian approved motorcycle helmet in Australia is about P4,000 and up.

Renting a bike in Australia cost about the same as in the US or Europe. Expect to pay P1,800 per day for the smallest scooter to well over P5,000 per day for a large capacity bike.

Fuel cost in Australia is about the same as the Philippines. In May 2006 expect to pay about P50 per litre in the cities and over P70 per litre in more remote regions.

For food and basic accommodation, you should allow (in May 2006 terms) about P3,000 to P4,000 per day.

Touring motorcyclists in Australia generally cover 1,000km to 1,500km in a good long day.

sir rbs

hopefully i'll be visiting australia this June or July. here in the Phils we only have one classification for riding a motorcycle, it does not matter if we're riding a scoot or a big bike as long as we have restriction 1 in our license we're fine.

What would happen if i ride down under and my license does not show any specific displacement of bikes i could ride.

hope you could help me on this one!

thanks!

With a Philippines license restriction 1, you can ride any size of motorcycle in Australia.

If you get to Cairns, be sure to look me up. I want to try and repay some of the warm hospitality that I have received during my rides through the Philippines.

hi mr. stewart,

would you have any idea on how much yamaha DT175s cost each in australia? i have a DT125 in the philippines and looks just about the same as that of the aussie-version DT except on the engine displacement.

i would love to own one (brand new or 2nd hand). what's the easiest way to import a single bike to the philippines?

thanks. kind regards.

Sorry for the late reply.

The Yamaha DT175 started selling in Australia in 1988 and is still sold here new today. To give you an indication of second-hand prices-

1988 P4,000 to P8,000
1990 P4,000 tp P12,000
1995 P16,000 to P28,000
2000 P56,000 to P64,000
2005 P104,000 to P124,000
New P180,000

For information on importing a new or second-hand bike into the Philippines, contact your Bureau of Customs. Freight from Australia to the Philippines would be less than P16,000.

I was in Australia (Wollongong & Sydney) last December 06 for a short trip.. it sure looks nice and safe to ride there... hopefully i'll be able to ride if i come back this year. My only concern is how im gonne fare in the roads there since the vehicles are on the other side of the road (right hand drive). Cheers!

I'm based in Sydney now but lived in Wollongong for a little over 2 years. The Filipino community there is pretty small so I wonder if we know the same people.:)

I only stayed in Wollongong (@ beachpark motor inn) for four days on official business coz we have a plant in Kembla grange. But i never thought there was any Filipino community in Wollongong coz ive never met any and havent seen any Filipinos while i was roaming around (i checked out the local bike shops)... Spent most of my time there with a guy named Michael Miladinovski our Project Manager... I was able to spend a night also in Paramatta because a friend of mine lives there permanently (he's the one who showed me around Sydney).. i am really hoping that il be able to come back on business again late this year.. maybe ill look you up, if its okey... man, australia's a beautiful place.

Ah...business trip. Akala ko baka may binisita kang kaibigan/kamaganak. Good to hear you enjoyed Australia. The Filipino community there is really small so I'm not surprised you didn't meet any. Cheers!

The best time to come here in aus. (victoria) is around Dec. to April cos it's summer here you have plenty of time to go around and the weather is much nicer, any other time is either raining or would be too cold for you. The best place you can ride is the great ocean road for a long journey , or the black spur and the dandenong mountain highway for a quicky ride.

There is quite a sizable population of Filipinos in both Cairns and Darwin.

There's only one Filipino I know in Australia, the last time we met was 1977. His name is Alex Garcia, a CPA. I heard he has good practice there.
