View Full Version : Incredible Tire Performance!

The faithful Bridgestone Trailwings on my Honda Transalp gave over of 20,000 (yup, twenty thousand) kilometers of great service in the year that they were on but the wear was already affecting slow speed maneuvers in traffic so I knew I couldn't put off replacing them anymore. Bridgestone said my tires weren't on stock, but they could order them and have them ready in month but that's too long to either not ride or risk it, so I made inquiries into alternatives.

As usual Pipoy of Caloocan Sales took royal care of me-as he does with all his customers from what I see whenever I visit him. I originally wanted the Metzeler Enduro 3's (aggressive off road 30-70 off road pattern) but I figured since at least 85% of my riding is spent on asphalt, I decided the more road-biased (80-20) Enduro 4's would be a better buy. Pipoy told me as they installed my new rubber, "you will corner like sport bike".

Well, it's been 2 weeks and 2 days and after 1,000 kilometers of weekend-only riding despite the rainy weather, I have to say that Pipoy was not kidding! After 500 kilometers of breaking-in and gingerly testing the traction of the tires, I have taken my favorite corners at my "balls-out" mean angles and the tires seem to laughing at me like, "Is that all you got"? The incredible extra grip is letting me carry 10-20kph more speed into corners I am familiar with, at lean angles that once had me panicking and I am clearly nowhere near the edge of the grip on these tires! I find myself begging for twisties like a sport bike rider. And with the variable weather, I have plenty of time to test them in slick conditions, too! True to the claims, they are great in the dry and great in the wet!

I highly recommend Metzeler's! Ihad them on my Harley too, wouldn't put anything else on after 6 years of great performance. Apparently, Metzeler's are no longer the secret weapon they used to be. While I was at Caloocan sales, a number of daily rider XLR's were also spooning on Metzeler's, which means they must have affordable models, too. One thing's for sure, you sure get your money's worth!!

See you on the road!

Excellent choice, James. I'm also gathering up some more moolah to get the tires on my Steed changed into Metzeler ME880's front and rear (about P8-9K at Caloocan Sales).

I've had the set of Metz on my scooter for about a year now (ME 7Teen). They're the best performance/safety upgrade I did so far.

The ME880s are great tires for cruisers, in fact they are the choice of most cruiser riders and custom bike builders in the US. We have them on our Shadow and with the rounded profile, they do corner like a sport bike.

Both my bikes are on Metzelers. Never had a problem - wet or dry! :)

ME330 front and ME550 rear on my VFR
ME22 on my XRM.

Glad you feel you made the right choice, James!

If you are buying Dunlop tyres for your motorcycle, you have to buy dunlop K series tyres. Not just an ordinary Dunlop tyres, try Dunlop K series and you will feel the difference. If you want some other Dunlop performance tyres for your MC, there are some other series. It depends on your budget!

I hear you guys! The performance on these tires is so outstanding, I had to write praise for it!

The harley comes stock with dunlops which sadly, felt like ice racing the whole time. My first set of metz's were lazers and then I changed them for ME880's. WOW.

The really amazing part is that now I ride a big dual-purpose Transalp but with the new Metz Enduro 4's, I really have sportbike cornering ability. At least, the bike does! :D

What size of tyres did you fit on your XRM?
Are ME22's street tyres?

Rom,

ME22 are street tires. I believe it's a sport tourer type. It is actually an old but tried and tested design. 17 x 2.75. front and rear. One thing, though, you need an inner tube to use that tire - but it's worth it!!!!

Dunlop won its first race on May 18, 1889, after introducing the radically new concept of pneumatic tires for competition. Ever since then, Dunlop has amassed a record of racing dominance that could literally fill a book. In 600 and 750 SuperSport racing, for example, Dunlop riders have won a mind-boggling 26 out of a possible 27 championships. SuperSport, Superbike, Supercross, motocross, off-road—Dunlop has won more AMA National Championships in virtually every category of racing than any other tire manufacturer.

Dont get me wrong! other tire manufacturer make tires as good as Dunlop. :C

I don't doubt that Dunlop has an excellent racing record of accomplishment in racing. Sadly, my own experience in street tires is that Dunlops are slippery! A lot of other riders have concurred this observation with me. Or maybe it's just the products that come stock on HD's.

All I know is that I personally have never been happier with Metz's and I thought I would share. :)

Bragster,

I remember your XRM with the Metz's. It looks so good, I really, really wanted to buy an XRM and copy you! :)

Bragster,

The XRM is a really attractive bike. But shod in your awesome Metz's, I have to say, it presents a really intimidating look that's all business. Best XRM I have ever seen, really.

James,

A year or two ago, i told you from another post that Metzelers are definitely a best buy for a rider looking for GREAT QUALITY but with MEDIUM budget. I am still using an Enduro-1 (Classic dual purpose tire), and i tell you, my XLR has been to Mt. Pinatubo & back using the same tire..very durable rubber compound indeed! The Enduro-4 is a great on-road tire. Lars Celestino is using one on his XT600, and the guy really pushes his bike on twisties like a sportbiker does. What i've posted are just some of our experiences with Metz'.

Now that you have Metz' on your Transalp, you made a wise decision. Ride safe bro!

BTW, Just saw a pic of you & Tom doing some off-roading, wish i was there to ride with you guys.

GUYS, i really beleive in tha capability of metzelers to hug the road!, the problem is thay seem to wear out faster than other brands....

i agree also about dunlops beeing slippery.... on the k series! however, the budget friendly GT 501 arrowmaster seems otherwise! i forgot all about breaking them in when we went to infanta with these tires newly installed! DAMN these tires are also good! never a sign of hessitation from my traction..... considering new tires are supposed to be still slippery because of the outer coating wherein we still have to wear them.... :D

I am currently doing a project in Calatagan, so I have been riding out there about twice a week lately. Last week, I hit the mountain twisties before Matabunkay at OMG speeds but after an initial panic attack, I trusted my new Metz's and leaned that Transalp like it's never been leaned. Since the twisties were uphill, the road came darn close to the grips! :)

Guys,

I will be needing new tires for my bike. It is currently fitted with Bridgestone Battlax BT56R 180/55R17 for the rear and 120/70R17 for my front.

Do you know where I can get equivalent Metz Tires near Las pinas or kailangan sa caloocan sales talaga ?

Thanks

Abet,

Caloocan Sales is the authorized distributor of Metz here in the Philippines. If you would probably get your metz from another supplier, I think the price will be a bit higher.

Johvic

OT: Was you bike at Saulog's shop the other day? I happen to see a bike there that loked like your bike.

abet, try calling J&J Motorcycle 801-2625 in Las Pinas. Got some Metz from them at the same price as those available in Caloocan, some are even slightly cheaper.

Certainly Metz's seem to get rave reviews from all users. I just replaced the skinny front tyre on my FXST with the original factory issue Dunlop but it still gives me worries when I'm overtaken on those bumpy curvy on or off tollway ramps by Corolla taxis! I can't seem to feel that point where it's still biting and I can lay the bike over more in safety.

If I could improve on that I would gladly settle for a little less mileage from the tyre itself. Metz's will be my next stop I think.

I think their equivalent Metzlers are the Sportec M1s.

My ZRX came with BT57, which were decent. Switched to their 010's and I love 'em, except for the fact that the fronts would cup and seem to wear prematurely. I tried a Metzler Sportec M1 on the front...what can I say, these tires stick, they don't cup, I get decent miles out of them (about 6K), very confidence inspiring. I haven't tried the rears, but my bro likes it on his 929. Currently, I have on Bridgestone Battlax 010 rears and Metz. Sportecs M1s up front.

The cheapest Metz set I could find was from YRS in Mandaluyong. They offered the ME330/ME550 combo to me for less than 6k including installation.

I'm getting them as soon as I can ride the bike over.

sorry pare, have to butt in, but tires are only as good as the rider. if youre not going to push your ride to the limit, as in a competition or race, then any brand of tires will do.

And another thing, is ME330/550 for sports bike or enduro type?

Do they also sell Mags in there?
