DOT and SNELL are the two most popular safety and quality standard organization in the World. Let's make it simple. If your helmet is not certified by any of the mentioned organization, you're putting your life in danger by using it.
Do you want to know if your helmet is DOT or SNELL certified? Check out the following sites:
DOT: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/testi...s218/index.html - this site lists all the helmets they've tested and whether these helmets passed or failed the test.
SNELL: http://www.smf.org/cert.html - this site simply lists all the SNELL certified helmets.
OBSERVATIONS:
1. Not all helmets are certified by both organizations. You might not find your helmet in the DOT list but you might find it in the SNELL list.
2. You can't base it in the brand of helmet. Some helmets of a particular brand passed the test, some don't.
3. Some brands claim that they're DOT or SNELL certified. Some of them lie. The only way to make sure that your helmet is certified is by checking the links above.
4. There are other standard organizations out there like ECE. Then again, these two are the two most popular in the US. Comparison? Read these links: http://www.helmetsetc.com/snell-vs-dot.htm and http://www.smf.org/articles/dot.html
I hope everybody finds this helpful. I don't mean to offend anybody.
RIDE SAFE EVERYONE! :R
