I wonder if I'll be protected well enough. I even bought and installed McAffee Firewall, Guardian, and Antivirus to make sure. :punk: froilanr August 28th, 2003, 08:53 AM Originally posted by marwin Thanks for the tip froilan. I downloaded the video files and watched them w/ my co-workers. We're very aware of the worms and viruses bec. this is our job. To protect our small network and our clients against these viruses and hackers.:) These are the video files from MS website. The link below I posted yesterday can be easily downloaded.:) 1. Firewall.wmv - 7.08Mb 2. AutoUpdate.wmv - 8.40Mb 3. AntiVirus.wmv - 6.89Mb Maybe you watch them too although they're very simple steps. You can easily understand the procedures bec. i't a multimedia!!!:) Wolver888 August 29th, 2003, 03:03 PM And never open files with two extension file names, these are possible worms that corrupt word document files, executable files and other functions of windows like the control panel once executed. Example : Word document file : Word.Doc ===> clean Word.com.doc ===> infected Word.exe.doc====>infected These worms deletes the "clean" file and saves itself on that file's name. There are some mails being sent these days with those kinds of attached filenames, Never open or download even if you know/trust who sent it because it might be the virus who sent itself using your friend's e-addy. Antiviruses doesn't give 100% protection. Just a tip on files with two extensions. :) froilanr August 29th, 2003, 04:07 PM Originally posted by Wolver888 And never open files with two extension file names, these are possible worms that corrupt word document files, executable files and other functions of windows like the control panel once executed. Dapat siguro Protect your PC nalang.:) senzali August 30th, 2003, 11:12 PM additional tips for Windows: 1. Disable Client for Microsoft Networks (if you dont have a network in your house). 2. Disable File and Printer Sharing (if you dont shhare printers) 3. Disable Guest User Account. 4. Rename Administrator User account. (All is needed now is to hack your admin pw but if the name is different, it is more difficult). 5. Have a Number, Special Characters (!@#$^&<>), Lower Case and Upper Case mix in your password and change every 90 days. 6. Add a Software firewall (Tiny, etc.) to block unwanted traffic in or out (note some software does call home - you can block these). 7. Go to http://www.grc.com and run his Leak Test, or have it probe your machine to see if there are vulnerable ports that are open. I am a system engineer and read Steve Gibson's article most of the time. Lots of good stuffs here. 8. I have a linksys router between my computers and the DSL modem which also is a firewall. For those that uses WAP or Wireless router, make sure to secure it as out of the box comes mostly without protection. 9. This holds true for Windows - out of the box, the system is open, so you should harden the security - reviewing the security policies, etc. 10. Install an Antivirus software - this is not enough, make sure to update the Virus Dat (signature) file - download from the AntiVirus company everytime there is the a new Signature File. This changes constantly. AntiVirus is only effected if it knows the Virus Signature that it needs to block! |
