hello guys, i am looking for a new helmet... the two i am considering are Arai RX-7 or the Shoei X-11... what are your experiences with these helmets...? i really like the Arai's but i read some reviews about it that it's one of the noisiest helmets around... for the Shoei's a lot of people complain that the sheild fogs up very easily on them... i also like the Arai's paint schemes better... the Arai's paints look more "traditional" and the Shoei's are more cartoony although both look good...

by the way, how do you pronounce Shoei...? is it Shoei like chewy...? or Shoei like showy, or is it "shoy...?

if im not mistaken shoei is japanese, its composed of three syllables sho-e-i.
you pronounce it as "sho-ey (long as in hey)".

my first helmet was a shoei rf-r followed by an arai rx7 rr3. i now have an agv gp-1 but i still use my arai for city rides. the shoei helmet had good noise insulation but it was also quite heavy. maybe the x-11 is lighter i dunno.

the arai rx7 is definitely much lighter and ventilation is excellent. it is noisier but then i wear earplugs so it really doesn't matter. i was using my arai when i crashed my bike in 03 and, well, my head's still in one piece. the arai had a small nick where my forehead should be and a gash on the visor. the agv is shaped more like an arai than a shoei that's why i'm using it for long rides.

between shoei and an arai? i'd take the arai.

Had a Shoei helmet twice in my lifetime. Didn't crash on them yet (knock on wood!) and my impression is that it's a good quality gear although quite heavy.

Now, it's sure would be nice to try an ARAI next.... :L

....Hmmm, I just wonder, maybe it was a Pinoy who came up with that brand name? Just maybe ha, an OCW Pinoy working in Japan long, long time ago probably as a crash tester and while riding an MC he crashed then uttered the word, "ARAY!!". Wala lang, food for thought lang...!! :O

Cheers!!

For the gentleman who is looking for an advice in buying a helmet,

allow me to express my opinion. It would be ill advice if you follow the route in buying a SHOEI or ARAI helmet for one major reason.... THE PRICE. As we all know both of them are considered highend helmets. Before you say anything, consider this. Their prices are unreasonable compared to let's say an HJC. SHOEI and ARAI cost upto $800 (25,000 pesos). Moreover what really counts for me is the construction behind the helmet. All of them including the HJC has two parts: the outer shell and the styrofoam inside the outershell. If you compare an HJC and a SHOEI you would find the the inner construction comes out that HJC is better. How do I know this? Well I do have a SHOEI, and ARAI and an HJC, I dismantled both the SHOEI and HJC to the bare, so that I can clean the insides and wash the foam cloth with them. Guess what? With regards to the thickness of the outer shell they are practically THE SAME. Next is, the SHOEI liner has a simplistic design and the the sponge is prone to shrinkage thus making the foam that meets your face (cheeks) tend to sink in with use and making the fit loose. Moreover, the construction of the liner is so basic that compared to an HJC, the SHOEI has less sponge and inner support compared to an HJC. The SHOEI liner is so cheaply made with simple masking tapes to hold the liner onto the stryro liner. Not to mention the craftsmanship of an HJC is so impressive together with its its styling. One last thing, I noticed that both SHOEI and ARAI helmets, which this one really turns me off are the strap that meets your chin. Both helmets, as far as mine are concerned use a buckle type where you have to insert the nylon strap into a double buckle and then make a loop and pull it to tighten it. This really is so cumbersome to do specially when you are wearing your gloves and most of all when you are in a hurry to split. Not like the HJC, it uses a snap on buckle where you always get a perfect fit and tightness that never losen even how many times you remove and wear your helmet. Lastly, the price.... The HJC is reasonably priced compared to the other two helmets. About Php4,700. you could get a full face helmet! thats not even equal to $100!!! The two helmets are exhorbitant almost upto 5X the cost of an HJC. Of course if you have the money to waste, why not? go ahead... I think the high price you are paying for in both ARAI and SHOEI helmets are the ad ons like the commercials, the ads, which their companies place on their products not really the quality. Its actually the name that you are buying when it comes to both ARAI and SHOEI. But as for me, HJC is the best!!!! Hope this helps you decide well!!!

i think what makes shoei and arai better than the rest is their outer shell. notice that hjc, zeus, and other lower priced helmets tend to be heavier than shoei or arai? shoei and arai have carbon kevlar composition on their outer shell which makes them more durable and lighter than lower priced helmets.
