View Full Version : Arai, Shoei, Suomy, HJC ?!?
midge August 8th, 2003, 03:42 PM hey guys :)
i've been surfing the net to see what's the best helmet to buy.
some are so expensive (like arai) but their rating's superb. others are affordable (like HJC) but rating's i've read so far are not as good as arai but are good enough.
my friend has somewhat brainwashed me into thinking that..'the more expensive, the better the quality'... Now doesn't that suck?!
i know this isn't the case for everything but since this is all new to me, i'm quite concerned about my potential choice.
can anyone help me out in chosing or at least narrowing down the good helmets?:?

Hi Midge,
Yup, for most cases this is often true. With high end models you get more features like:
- lighter weight
- removable liner / paddings
- quick realease shields / visors
- trick graphics
I've just concluded an evaluation of sorts... and the best value for money is HJC...
Of course, everything depends on your budget...
HTH :)
Mean Streak August 8th, 2003, 04:04 PM There's the middle ground like AGV and FM, and higher end HJC's which have removable linings.
Hercules August 8th, 2003, 04:12 PM midge>>
Hi How are ya? i suggest you check the helmet brand one by one get mif it fits your budget then get it.
doughboy_748r August 8th, 2003, 04:24 PM the quick release mechanisms, removable pads, quick release strap..... these are all just plus features that bring up the price. i suggest start with the standards or governing bodies that have approved these helmets. if the brands are recognized by these test organizations then it would be a good place to start looking at what they can offer of course your choice will now depend on your budget.
somebody mentioned hjc as a good value for money shell - i agree. of course there are other things to consider like fit and comfort. its really up to you how much you can spend on the other extra features the helmet has.
just remember make sure that the brand you choose has had there shells tested and approved by organizations such as snell and the like.
levis August 8th, 2003, 05:11 PM HJC CL-14:

info here (from HJC Website): http://www.hjchelmets.com/website_html/full_cl14_static.html
Retails for P4200 around metro manila... You just need to shop around to find a good deal (JT Triump, RKP, Deka, Caloocan Sales... etc)
HJC AC-10:

Top of the line helmet from HJC, with removable padding, lighweight shell, Snell M2000 and DOT approved. Solids go for P7700 and Graphics for P8200... Smoked shields are P650 a piece and if you fancy "iridium" like silver / gold / rainbow visors - they're around P1K+ each.... VALUE for MONEY :D

Patrick August 12th, 2003, 08:04 AM My take on helmets is this:
Helmets are expendable and consumable.
Hemets do not last forever.
You should be prepared to throw it away in case of a crash that compromises its outer shell integrity or crushes its EPS foam lining.
Helmet foam comfort liners-- the soft stuff has a habit of disintegrating in about 7-10 year from date of manufacture, depending on how the helmet is kept.-- The cooler the helmet is kept over its entire life, the longer the foam will last. Usually, when the foam starts to deteriorate, the helmet will already be obsolete and you will not be able to find replacement liners-- time to buy a new one.
Therefore, I would not spend too much on a helmet.
What you are after is, in order of preference, as far as I am concerned:
1. Certification : DOT <and> SNELL
2. Fit and Comfort
3. Ventilation
4. Graphic Design
5. Does it excite you oveall.
Withon those criteria, get the cheapest you can find because you will eventually need to replace it.

ERNAN DE LEON August 12th, 2003, 06:21 PM I am very much concern about safe riding on a bike short or long haul and i made it a point to wear a helmet religiously. I have the following lids to choose on what to wear.
1. Arai Astro Nakano Replica - Full Face
2. Arai Tour Cross - Full Face all purpose
3. AGV Targa - Full Face Flip-up
4. AGV City - Half Face - Scooter ride use only

My first helmet was an HJC AC-12 I think it was called. Going thru the posts, I don't see any KBC helmets? They are also pretty affordable and good... and absolutely have great fit for us asians. I just do not know if they are available there?

Here in manila there isnt seem to be any distributor for KBC... hope there will be one soon tho' especially if they offer the same level of value-for-money like HJC :)
Product competition is always beneficial for consumers, dont y'all agree? :D

ABSOLUTELY! More products, more choices, more competition, better prices!
Roswell November 6th, 2003, 10:45 PM I don't think there is any difference in Helmets. I bought a Caliber Full Face modular helmet and it is Great. They say it is the exact same as the Bell modular, but who knows. I went to their website www.caliberhelmets.com, but they are wholesale only. I only paid $129 for the helmet (the bell helmet cost $299).
But the helmet is so great.
Good luck.

I agree (but not entirely). Shoei also is a great helmet if I may add.

I tend to agree with Pat. You will notice quickly the differences if you've had the experience of owning the different brands. They have their pros and cons.
Unless otherwise you can afford as much as Ernan de Leon. :D The HJC is by far the most cost effective helmet in the Philippines bar none! AGV a good middle ground. Surprisingly I've had the best fit from HJC and AGV.
Sure you look hot using a Suomy or Arai but in the end, price, fit (comfort), safety features are the primary considerations. Remember each helmet has a life expectancy of only 5 years approximately even if you haven't crashed or dropped it.

IT: The Arai Astro TR fits my head well. But it bloody cost me $400!
reihat February 15th, 2004, 05:57 AM in case one of you needs a small sized helmet, I am selling my Arai Signet GTR for Php 10000.00

Vince, just brought home a KBC Wolf for my brother the other day. You're right, it's a good helmet. Now I'm thinking of getting a KBC Racer-1 myself, maybe on my next trip - next week.:D
attached is the Wolf model:
SVince650S February 15th, 2004, 09:06 PM Hey edm! sorry wasn't able to reply to your pm. yup still around... getting fat. :D
Hmm... KBC wolfs are those either black or charcoal metallic ones. Pretty cool... almost similar to my TK-9s. All the KBC helmets have interchangeable visors since they have the same mechanism. The Racer-1 is their newest and top of the line with a different visor snapping mechanism. So my visors are not compatible. :( That's why I'll either stick to TK-9s or their racing helmet VR-1s.
I have not tried nor tested a Racer-1 but they say it is comparable in design and specs to Arai's (but not the price :D ). It is also much more ventilated... so good for Philippine conditions. :D
botchix February 17th, 2004, 04:41 AM Arai fro me...
I've had AGV, Shoei, Roof and Suomy, but the Arai fits and feels comfortably.. They're very expensive, but in use they are the best.. If only they could have an anti-mist visor just like on Roof Diversion, that would be even better...

Just bought a KBC VR7 Wolf from the States & had my brother bring it home for me. Fits me well & lighter than the CL12 I used to have. Got it for a little over than anHJC CL14.
racepro February 18th, 2004, 01:46 PM ive recently bought hjc cl 14 much more ligther than cl12
