View Full Version : monster questions
R-1 July 18th, 2005, 09:49 AM Hi,
Are there any monster owners here? specifically the monster 620.
What can you say about this bike? Is it good for long rides? how about with a backrider? How is the handling and power? are there any problems with maintenance?
TIA
duc44 July 24th, 2005, 01:22 PM Try visiting the ducati monster forum its http://www.ducatimonster.org/
You can learn a lot of things regarding the monster there.
R-1 July 24th, 2005, 05:45 PM thanks for the link, will check it out. :)
Love2 July 31st, 2005, 05:32 PM the Ducati Monster has comfort and performance i'm actually saving up for one so i can finally enjoy (traffic everyday) city driving or (weekend or holiday) out of town bike with or without a backrider :R
R-1 July 31st, 2005, 07:54 PM I was worried that the monster620 might not have enough performance, but if lovelove says it has performance and comfort then i guess i dont have to worry :*
there was a large group of riders here in bacolod yesterday from ormoc, cagayan and cebu. I saw a ducati monster800dark. It was the best sounding bike in the group in my opinion. The others were mostly big cruisers, harleys, and a group of v-max riders. Im saving up too. any one interested in an exelent condition 1999yzf-R1 for p360k ?
kukula August 1st, 2005, 04:37 PM Hi Love love. Nice meeting you. Remember? I was with Pipoy and Boylit and Clariza at Starbucks Rockwell? :) Anyway if memory serves me right I do remember you were using a Monster that time? You not happy with it na? Anyway a Monster is also on the top of my list for my next bike. Really looks cool with its classic styling and great sound to boot :bouncy:

hi Kukula yes i remember you nice meeting you that sunday morning my bike is the gray Ducati Senna with red orange mags my fellow Ducati Unlimited Club member (Claro Villanueva) is the one who owns that yellow Ducati monster with race checkers you saw in rockwell

m900s August 8th, 2005, 01:04 PM It will depend on your weight and if your planning to ride 2 up most of the time. I would go with 800 S2R if I am in your place, best of both worlds with sexy SSS.
lorsban August 8th, 2005, 05:02 PM I have an m750 and its a damn good bike so most probably the newer ones would be better. Put on some carbon fibre high-pipes by arrow and it sounds great-they're not too expensive either. The thing to remember with these bikes is that you have to use them often. Troubles start showing once you let them collect dust (mostly electical issues). Either way, good luck and ride safe!

Hmm.. i was at access plus , the guys there said the arrow cans cost P60,000 .. not cheap either.. and it was just the aluminum standard mount. :C

hi R-1,
still haven't got a monster yet???like i said you won't regret it...woth proper maintenance, this 90degree v-twins lasts forever..the classic styling and comfortable ride are quite delicious....hmmmmm

Hi larry, the plan is to sell the R1 and get a monster :)
the monster has what i want, classic, simple, nekid, comfortable, delicious sound, handling, fast enough, and well.. its a ducati :) the monster's design and style wont grow old even if you keep it for years and years. Just look at a 12 year old monster, it looks the same as the 2005 model. Even the maintenance on a 2 valve monster without the oil cooler and radiator and all the plastic will be simple i think.

well, i hope that you can sell your bike soon...
the perfect combination for me though is a monster for those country rides and having a beautifull babe at your back albeit a scooter for city driving and hanging out with the boys...hehe
if you love to tinker too with your bike, i find it a lot lot easier fiddling around with the ducati and slowly modifiying it's personallity...
all the best to you and i pray you find your ride soon...

Thank you ,.. ill let you know how it goes.. :)
warning about babes,.. Had 2 crashes while i had a babe on the back. Bad news for the babe, they usually get injured more than me. That was a long time ago. Since then ive learned to focus on riding and not on the backrider :o

R-1 September 13th, 2005, 08:53 PM Hi larry, lovelove,
check out my new monster. got this 2 weeks ago. its a 2004monster620ie with only 2600km on the clock.
some initial impressions:
- the front fork is too stiffly sprung
- shifting 1st to 2nd is clunky
- but its so nice to ride, i like the v twin sound and torque.

duc44 September 13th, 2005, 11:12 PM Congrats R1 on your new bike! I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The shifting will improve after some saddle time. Or maybe I'm just used to it with my bike :O Shifting as I have observed with the ducati is different with some of the jap bikes, it takes a bit of timing for you to shift smoothly. Anyway I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. Ride safe and enjoy your new bike!
R-1 September 14th, 2005, 02:24 PM thanks guys, nice pic christian. Duc44, sometimes the shifting improves if i blip the throtlle. I now want to ride everyday but it always rains! :m
well i know ill get my chance...
rode the bike up to tagaytay when i was in manila 2 weeks ago. I had a backride but passing cars uphill was no problem at all.. very nice! even when i got caught in the rain,.. at least i know my duc isnt hydrophobic.
i notice the lack of power only at speeds above 160kph. (my previous bike was an R1, excessive power at all speeds) i enjoy the monster, somehow its more lovable than the R1, sort of an underdog but with class..
another thing ive noticed is that the front header pipe has very little clearanc to the ground. i average 18km/liter on my monster. got about 16kpl on the R1
what kind of fuel mileage do you guysj get? i got as low as 13 and as high as 22.
juntan September 14th, 2005, 04:27 PM SIR R-1,
congrats on ur new bike......
hows d R-1 na? have u sell it?
mag change ka na ba ng user id nyan? :*
ride safe bro....
R-1 September 15th, 2005, 07:09 AM jun, I traded in the r1 for the monster. Access plus now owns my R1 and they are selling it at thier showroom. I was R1 long before there was an R1. . My brothers names and mine too all start with the letter R. so our callsigns are R1, R2, R3....etc..its coincidence that i have the same name as the bike.
I want to say something about the monster,..im ok with its less flashy looks and less power, but what i want to change is the forks! its non adjustable and far too stiff. With our roads here in negros i am bouncing around and could not go as fast as i want to. Combine the monsters stiff fork with a light front end and the result is that it seems it wants to go into a headshake. If this monster had adustable forks it would be perfect. I have already changed the fork oil from 10w to 7w but it is not enough. maybe some mountainbike fork oil 5w or thinner woud be better. A steering damper might also improve my confidence but it wont soften the harsh ride of the forks.
i could go faster on the same roads with the R1 not because of the power but because of the suspension.
juntan September 15th, 2005, 10:21 AM okey sir,
ride safe wd ur new bike sir,
pls tame d monster within d bike first...
how i wish to have a naked bike too... :L
someday......

Why don't you try on setting up your suspension to your weight or replace the spring with aftermarket? It will be alot cheaper.. Check this link for guide...http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Suspension1.html#AdjustFrontSuspension (http://)

thanks for the link m900s. it says i can open my fork and cut down the size of the factory spacers or chnage to smaller pvc spacers. Ill measure my sag first and see if its 1/4 of the total travel as recommended.
ok, I measured the sag and got 40mm. Thats more than 1/4 of my total travel of 130mm which seems to say that my preload is not stiff at all. So why the stiff bouncy ride? Damping? ..fork stiction?.. too much unsprung wieght up front?
I saw the 2005 monster and it had smaller front disks, could that be for lower unsprung weight so the front suspension could react faster to bumps?.
Any ideas ?...
doughboy_748r September 15th, 2005, 07:34 PM 40mm is alot already. ive got way less than that. have you checked tires pressure? might be too hard. you one of those things that we just forget to look at. if you've got that sag in the front try checking the sag at the rear. put a zip tie on your forks and see how far you are going. by the way how much do you weigh? if your under 160lb it might really feel a little stiff. i think ducati's guess of the average rider is 160 to 180 lbs. if your out of this range you probably would do better with softer springs.... or...... the R1 was a couch....
m900s September 16th, 2005, 01:47 AM As per doughboy, 40mm is a lot. You should have about 35mm with both your feet on pegs. If you weigh more than 180 you have 3 options of changing fork oil, change springs/shim or change the forks completely. Before you do all of the above set your rear sag and tire pressure properly. I know some people who weigh 200lbs and able to ride your bike without completely changing the forks. If you weigh 230+lbs then do it. Also check the internet for more info, as there are a lot of people more knowledgeable about suspension than me.

hi R1,
congrat's bro! welcome to the ducati family...
forks..try to e-mail the owner of this site..www.ducatisuite.com for technical advice on the forks.
shifting...try to get evoluzione or yoyodyne clutch master for less effort on shifts and it's less prone to leaks
more power...save up for air filters a power comander(for efi) and high mount exhaust and flywheels...
R-1 September 16th, 2005, 08:07 AM thanks larry
yes i thought my R1 was stiff, now it felt like a couch in comparison. but the riding position of the monster is way more comfortable.
my front tire pressure is already down to 27psi.
you're right doughboy, i weigh 148 lbs. the rear is ok with me, its the front thats bouncing around so much.
has anyone had experience with white lithium grease in the spraycan? is this ok for our chain? its cheap and clean compared to regular chainlubes.
larryf8 September 16th, 2005, 01:52 PM thanks larry

your chain is o-ring type and is pre-greased. what you want is to clean it every 500kms or less and apply chain wax to seal in the lube. i use a rag and wd 40 to claean the chain..
R-1 September 16th, 2005, 10:27 PM Hmm.. where can i get chain wax?
BTW dont try to bring your wd40, spray lube, white grease..etc. with you when you board the superferry. i had to leave my brand new big cans of spray lube at the south harbor.
R-1 September 18th, 2005, 09:21 PM rode my monster 140kms today! I like this bike better than the R1! Heres a pic before the rain. I of course am not in the picture because i took it.

Bro,
Your back in the province na.....Yesterday I rode with a group. All of them had monsters. I was looking for you kasi baka you were one of them.......
doughboy_748r September 19th, 2005, 09:59 AM r-1,
maybe you should change your forum name to monster na. glad to hear you like the monster. if you ever get after market termi pipes hahanap hanapin mo na ang tunog ng duc lalo na if you ever decide to go back to an inline 4.

R-1's nickname in real life is really R-1
I was R1 long before there was an R1. . My brothers names and mine too all start with the letter R. so our callsigns are R1, R2, R3....etc..its coincidence that i have the same name as the bike.
doughboy_748r September 19th, 2005, 02:18 PM hey good one... monsteR-1....
R-1 September 19th, 2005, 03:41 PM thanks for explaining that jumbing, yes i was R1 long before there was an R1 hehe.
Heres another pic i took yesterday at don salvador benecdicto town. You pass this town in the mountains when you cross over from bacolod to san carlos in the oriental side. this route for cars did not exist about 5+ years ago. The 100cc two stroke contrasts with the monster dosent it?
doughboy, i love the sound of the monster even with the stock pipes! i can hear the airbox growl when i open the throttle . Ive checked the aftermarket pipes and even the second hand ones are too expensive for me. P40k for a pair of used arrows. 40k will buy enough 95 octane gas for the monster to go 24,000 kms.
Jumbing September 19th, 2005, 03:53 PM I like this bike better than the R1!
I know the feeling. I hate to admit it but I like riding around on my CB750 much more than on my sportbike. On my CB750, I feel like a genuine rider. On my sportbike....I feel like a poser... :o

Bingo! Bullseye! thats it . thats how i feel
those liter sportbikes are truely awesome and i can say i will never come close to using all they have to offer, but on a monster620 i can come close, i think,.. .... its more satisfying.. :D
freinds seem disappointed when i traded in the R1 for the monster, but they dont understand..
doughboy_748r September 19th, 2005, 05:08 PM r-1,
checkout brcpics (at least thats what i think his user name is here - name's woodie). he gutted his pipes and they sounded really good. i think he's done some for the guys of desmo. sa ducs si claro v. has done the same mode. or you can check out ducatipipemod.com (i think) if the site's still alive. it explains the process of opening your monster's pipe.

yup, you can gut the pipe down to about 3inches and the site explains how. the growl you get is definitely more satisfying. some say it'a intoxicating! although this doesnt add horses to your rear, they say that this mod is well worth it.
R-1 September 21st, 2005, 09:06 AM I am tempted to do the ducati pipe mod but i want to be able to undo anything i do to the bike so in case i dont like it i can return to the stock set up. And when time comes to sell the bike (long time pa) a completely stock bike will command a higher price i think.
Maybe if someone wants to sell me some original monster pipes..
R-1 September 22nd, 2005, 12:09 AM My monster averages 18km/liter while my R1 used to average 19km/liter.
I suspect the reason for my low fuel mileage is that im using too high octane fuel. The manual of my monster says to use 95-RON fuel. so ive been using blaze and velocity.
But ive just found out that there are many different types of octane ratings. there's RON (research octane number), MON (motor octane number), AKI (anti knock index, which is the number we see at the pumps at the gas stations, also known as pump octane number)
theres a formula for this but ive found out that RON octane is about 6 points higher than pump octane (AKI). That means when the ducati manual tells us to use 95 RON they mean 89 pump octane!
they also confuse you with their tire pressures (bar, not psi). The horsepower is kw, not horsepower.
ill start using 90 octane instead of 95 octane and post results here. Im hoping to see an improvement in fuel mileage and power.
larryf8 September 22nd, 2005, 05:06 AM hi r1, talked to toti the other day regarding your front suspension system. by chance, he was working on softening a KTM front end. this guys are precise and they know what they're doing. i mentioned your problem and he said he can adjust for you...now that's good news don't you think?
in europe, they in fact use 86 to 90 octane...
chriSTIanF4i September 22nd, 2005, 08:17 AM r-1,

pre, magkano kaya aabutin kung papa modified ko yung stock muffler ko? its a stock 749 muffler. im thinking of sending it jan sa pinas kung mas mura ang pa modify ng stock muffler jan.
R-1 September 22nd, 2005, 08:25 AM Hi larryf8, in fact access plus had already changed the oil in my front forks, i heard toti instruct his mecahnic to change the oil in the forks from a 10w to a 7w oil. i guess it has improved a bit (very little) but i wonder if it could be better. I read my manual and it says there that the stock oil is 7w. could they have overlooked this? i now want to try some 5w. Theres some 5w oil at a local bicycle shop here but i guess opening the forks would require a special tool. been riding for more than 3 weeks now (in the rain too) and i am getiing used to the stiff forks.
cant wait to change spark plugs and change over to 90 octane and see if power and fuel economy improves. A 60hp monster620 should have better fuel economy than a 150hp R1, right? As it is i was getting better fuel mileage on my R1.
dont know if my monster still has the champions or ngk.
larryf8 September 22nd, 2005, 12:26 PM I am tempted to do the ducati pipe mod but i want to be able to undo anything i do to the bike so in case i dont like it i can return to the stock set up. toti has a used monster pipe but i don't know how much. i use ngk DPR8EIX or denso IXU24 irridiums...they last longer and will give you better burns, thus fuel economy
doughboy_748r September 22nd, 2005, 01:04 PM r-1
as for fuel economy since your used to the power of your r-1 you might be wrining the neck out of your monster more = more fuel used. or if the terrain you ride on is taxing the 600 more than your 1000 then you might use up more.
christian,
i think sending it over might be cheaper than buying an aftermarket one there but i also think gutting the thing there would be cheaper. you can do it yourself if you want. not too difficult but probably not as easy as the old superbikes.

hmm.. good point..
could also be that my monster is so new that it needs to loosen up before it gets more efficient
larry, thanks for the tip on the plugs

I checked the site ducatipipemod , $350 to do the 749 stock muffler.. i think mas makakamura pa din ako if i sent it there. shipping via air is not a problem for me. it will only take 3 days to get there. just need to know who can do it for the ducati 749 muffler.
