I'm planning to purchase a rainwear that will go over my clothes. There are a lot of rainwears to choose from and I'm having difficulty in choosing which one is best. Some of the brands I came across are Alpinestars, Fieldsheer, Nelson Rigg, Tour Master and Teknic. I think I like the Nelson Rigg better because it has heat resistant panels on the pants so that the material won't melt when in contact with hot engine or pipe (PVC melts when in contact with hot surface) but it cost a little less than 10K! . There are also a lot of materials to choose from like PVC, polyester, polyurethane, etc. I'm also eyeing the Alpinestars El-Nino series and you can buy either the jacket or the pants only. But if I'm going to get both, cost would be more or less 15K!!!  I hope somebody here had any experience using the said rainwears and can give us feedback about it. Ride safe!

dude,

me being practical, only bought a raincoat at SM worth 70 pesos, and a poncho worth 30 pesos. i really don't think 10K worth of raingear is practical and worth-it. and since rainy days only happens let say 6 months a year, what will you do with the 15K raingear on a sunny weather for almost half a year? just my opinion though....

I agree with grifter101. Unless you have the money to burn it's more practical to buy plastic rainwear. And if it really is raining hard, my advice is for you to leave your bike in a secure place and commute. I have the advantage of leaving my bike in the office whenever it rains cats and dogs. Its safer than traveling in wet conditions.

My two coins worth is for you to invest in protectors. Happy riding.

I use the Joe Rocket Phoenix 3, its a padded jacket (protection), is ventilated (for summer use) and comes with a removable liner (rainy season). Costs 8500 if I remember correctly. Got it at Jt Trading along Taft avenue.

Suzuki Katana GS750 83'
Kawasaki ZZR 400 97'
Piaggio Hexagon 97'
Gilera Runner 00'
Piaggio Skipper 96'

...priorities priorities

If your a serious commuter then better get serious and invest wisely.

What are good qualities of a raingear:

1) Water proofing. (welded seams, flaps)
watch out for leak spots (e.g. waist, crotch, neck areas)
2) Portablility. (light weight material)
look for thin, soft(flexible), durable materials.
3) Design. (comfort, visibilty, style)
try it on for size, color/reflectors.

Check the web or magazines for reviews for test results in light to heavy rain. Some are just good for light rain, what you want should also keep you dry(no leaks and heavy sweat :D ) during heavy rains.

Choose wisely and every peso will be worth it whether it's 50 or 15,000 pesos.

I really invest heavily on gears. I only choose the best when it comes to protection. I do touring a lot with my bike and I take my bike rain or shine. It never failed me once but I don't like the feeling when water is in my crotch already, its very itchy :M :O I even came to work smiling even though my clothes are dripping wet the last time it rained. I'm planning to buy one of those super technical gore-tex jackets but I have to have a rainwear also if the ride is not a planned one (like going to office in my casual attire). I saw somebody posted in another thread that he uses a Teknic one suit rainwear. But I don't like the material because its made of PVC so there is a possibility of being ripped and also melt when in contact with anything hot. I like the two piece though so I can use the jacket, aside from protection when its raining, as a windbreaker also. I might be getting the Nelson-Rigg already. They are known for their bags and they also have some good reviews on their rainwear. I just need a second opinion on them before I spend my hard-earned money. :bouncy:

That would be me!--- :O

Well your right about the tearing & melting...fortunately I ride a scooter and have less to worry about either.

The only non plastic rain-proof I've used was made of Cordura but it's :W hell inside. The only time I felt comfortable in it was a cold, rainy early morning trip to Real Quezon.

The advantage of the Teknic PVC is it's not the brittle type of PVC and it's pretty cool even in very light daytime rain. My only gripe would be the freakin velcro...there's so much of it it'll catch anything from frayed gloves to helmet straps. A small price to pay though to keep dry.

Keep Dry!!!

I just bought a pair of Treds Motorcycle Rain Overboots for me and my wife. Cost me around 3K for a pair. It is meant to be worn over your shoes. I've read a lot of good reviews about it so I;'m going to give it a try. As for the jacket and pants, I'm going with Tourmaster Elite. I'm just waiting for their reply as to what size will fit me and my wife. I will be getting the Nomex option for the pants for protection from hot engine and pipe.

I heard of them. But I don't like the way it looks when you wear it. The color makes you look like... well a FROG!!! :D Although there are also a lot of good reviews from bikers using the said product, the pants still doesn't have the heat protection (which I really want :punk: ) and when expose to such heat might create a hole in it. IMO, a waste of investment for someone who is clamsy (sometimes! :O ) as me.

I think what you have is the Chichane (I hope I got that right) model. It looks like something you would pick up from the shelf in an emergency downpour (like a Poncho). And I don't like the 1 pc design. It looks like its difficult to wear in a hurry and you might end up ripping the bottom part if your not careful. But I believe it will do especially in keeping the water out.

It (one piece PVC) can serve as a floating device of some sort. :D

Have a fun ride in the rain guys!!! :s

how about your feet? anything to wear over them to keep them dry??? most of the rain gears available deal with the torso mainly, and secondly, the leg part... what about the feet???

Try Treds. I just ordered mine and I'm expecting it within two weeks. It is an overboots so you just slip on your shoes and it will fit. It doesn't look like the typical rain boots that looks like plastic. It is made of rubber but it looks like a dull leather. For the legs, just buy a rain pants that is long enough to accomodate your height. Some have elastic bottoms and velcros so you can tighten it. Some come with stirrups that is use to lock it with your shoes.

my 2 cents for anyone else reading this thread

frogg toggs is breathable rain wear. presko talaga, unlike your normal plastic rain suits na parang sauna. para siyang papel na 'di tinatagos ng tubig.

and the color was originally designed for camoflouge kasi gamit din 'to ng hunters. kaya mag-mumukha ka nga sigurong palaka :D

but if you're after style and the heat protection, wala nga frogg toggs nun :D

@mgee, vir, nice idea  masubukan nga minsan

on the other hand, if for some reason you really do not feel like enjoying the rain, frogg toggs is the way to go. in addition to what fatcrowe said, frogg toggs is very convenient to wear and remove so much unlike drytech liner which incidentally,i also have.

We are on our way on finishing our raingear, hopefully this will come out soon since heavy rains are expected to come as often as it can.It is somewhat deisgned to look like a north face jacket that can easily worn and easily fix.materials are made to be light but surely water proof keeping you dry under wet conditions. It is also designed to fit small portion in the compartment of your mc and the best of all, it will surely fit your budget.

I'll post here when and where you can check or buy the said product. :D

Ride safe!!

Hehe, not advisable lang at night bka sumobra ang cooling effect kasi may wind chill :O Pero sarap ng cooling effect ng scattered rainshowers sa Hundred Islands ride naten. Alternate drenching then drying off. Really cools a hot day ride.

Bros,

Where do you keep your rain gears? Do you really need to bring a back pack just for the rain gear? Sometimes we can't really predict the weather. I had a time where I got caught in the rain and people are looking at me because I'm very freakin wet...hehehe :(

I place it in my backpack and put it in the compartment pag nakasakay. Pants can be folded to occupy a small space. Yung jacket ko water resistant na lagi ko dala open ko lang pag mainit or tali sa baywang like some I see.
