The following release is from the Repsol Honda team...
Toni Elias has been operated on this afternoon at the Instituto Dexeus in Barcelona [Spain] after the injury suffered at the Welkom circuit. Elias, who had taken part at the South African GP with an infiltration, decided to undergo surgery immediately after being examined by Dr. Xavier Mir.
The surgery was carried out this afternoon and everything went okay. If there are no last-minute inconveniences, the Repsol rider will be able to take part in the Spanish GP which will be held in Jerez on May 11th, although he won't be 100% fit.
"Toni Elias suffered a double thumb fracture. The first one is a fracture of the left thumb distal phalanx due to a flexor tendon rupture. The second one is a rupture of the cubital ligament of the thumb metacarpophalageal joint. - explained Dr. Mir - The surgery consisted in implanting two osteosynthesis with screws and titanium miniplates. In one week, Toni will be able to start rehab, which will last four weeks.
"If he wishes to take part in the GP in Jerez in two weeks, we will make a plastic ferula to minimize the effort to be made on the bike as much as possible."
