View Full Version : gimmick - flat
zvike005 January 17th, 2005, 02:12 AM have you ever experienced after having some gimmick so late at night and when you are on your way far home, your rear tire got flat? considering vulcanizing shops are closed, what did you do? i just experienced that tonight and it freaks me out... i have to run it flat and knowing it's very dangerous, i stopped at some certain points on the road. i don't know what's the damage yet 'coz the sun ain't shining but there was one thing on my mind, "i have to get home..."
jon January 17th, 2005, 07:32 AM i bring tools..... a lot of 'em... :punk:
Frank Woolf January 17th, 2005, 10:14 AM I had a similar experience during the daytime. I had just come off the skyway onto SLEX towards Sucat when my rear tire suddenly delated.
I wobbled to the side of the road to see the tire completely flat. Somebody had borrowed my puncture repair kit and broke it but I had a can of slime stuff that is supposed to fix holes and inflate the tire.
I screwed the end of the tube attached to the airosol can onto the valve and the end just fell off the tube. I tried holding it hard against the valve but just got my hands and everything else covered in sticky slime and everything I touched stuck to my hands.
I got out my cellphone that stuck to my fingers and called my wife who luckily was at home in the Philippines and ask her to bring the electric pump from home thinking I may be able to inflate the tire enough to go a short distance then repeat to get off SLEX.
She came along the service road and handed me the pump over the fence but after I tried and tried it bacame obvious that the air was going out faster than I could get it in.
I decided that as the tire would obviously have to be replaced I might as well try to ride it. My only concern was the wheel rim could be damaged on the road. I wobbled along stopping at regular intervals to check but there was no sign of the rim contacting the road and getting damaged. Obviously the internals of the tire would be totally destroyed but I had to replace it anyway.
I got off SLEX and stopped at the first gas station to try inflating the tire but couldn't get any air into it so I thought maybe their air pump was faulty. I went on to the next gas station where the result was the same. Just after the second gas station was a vulcanising shop where I asked them to fix it just so I could get home. The hole was huge and they put in a whole bunch of plugs to seal it.
I got home, ordered a new tire and didn't use the bike until the new tire arrived. Now I have a new puncture repair kit.

That was Last year to be exact. It was after the Music Video shoot, remember? That was a very horrible afternoon experience.

A can of Fix-a-flat comes in handy sometimes. How far did you ride the bike?
gbv_69 January 17th, 2005, 11:00 AM Flat tire was one of my worst experience, about some years ago i attended a rally at ortigas ave. its past 1am when i decided to go home, after about 5 km i notice that my scooter is wabling so i stop to check it out, then i saw my rear tire is already flat and theres no way i could continue to ride my bike, so i have to walk my bike from libis all the way to marikina city, until finally i saw a 24hr vulcanizing shop that redeemed me from my misery
jeff_o January 17th, 2005, 01:05 PM i happen to experience flat tire too... on my way home from school (this was n years ago hehehe). i felt my rear wobble and a nail got stucked in. my tires weren't tubeless that time so i had to push my bike all the way to a vulcanizing shop.... good thing there was one nearby. when the boy took out the interior... there was a cut 3inches long my Gosh... they just patched it and cooked it... it was good until now... but it was a hell of an experience.
Hardliner January 17th, 2005, 01:09 PM walked it 5Km away...
sure those tyre kits come in handy.
Frank Woolf January 17th, 2005, 05:41 PM That was a very horrible afternoon experience.
It was 'orrible for my wallet. 8,000 pesos to replace a tire that was less than one year old :(
R-1 January 17th, 2005, 05:52 PM What puncture repair kit do you guys use?
Is it easy to use? Do you have to renove the tire?
I have repair kits for my bicycles, will those be useful for motorcycles?
TIA
noelnash January 17th, 2005, 06:10 PM I was running a moderate 60 kph in Commonwealth avenue then I run over a part of an exhaust pipe. I saw the object to get ready to run over it but no time to do evasive manuevers. I think I did a jump but my front tire blew out right after landing, with the tire and interior getting punctured too.
Luckily, there was a vulcanizing shop 50 meters from where I run over the pipe. Talk about having a ' guardian angel' vulcanizing shop.
Question: I am still running with the tire having a 0.5 cm laceration and a vulcanized interior. Do I have to replace the tire??

bro where is this 24hrs vulcanizing shop here in our town (marikina)??? incase i get a flat tire late at night while going around marikina.
EagleOne January 17th, 2005, 06:14 PM why don't we start a threading regarding the locations of 24hrs vulcanizing shops. ok i'll start it. i need your support guys!!!
Wolver888 January 17th, 2005, 06:57 PM As for me, I bring a punture kit for tubelass and a pump. No more big worries on getting a flat tire. :)
For tires with inner tube, there's a solution too, a cold patch for that but you need to bring out the inner tube to patch the problem. :)

even if you have a kit, how will you get the tire off the rim?
you need to get the tire off the rim to repair it dont you?
Ive seen a ride buddy repair his honda wave on the road with a bicycle kit, but what if its a tubeless big bike?
nareh January 18th, 2005, 12:52 AM Is there a autoinflate in can for motorcycle?,mostly you can find is for cars
which clearly indicated it's not advisable for motorcycle use. :(
zvike005 January 18th, 2005, 02:25 AM after that terrible night experience, the sun shines literally, i got it to a vulcanizing shop. and guess what, there's a little laceration in my tire. though it's little you can actually see the interior. :m
Question: I am still running with the tire having a 0.5 cm laceration and a vulcanized interior. Do I have to replace the tire??
i think so, though it's hard on the pocket but we have to. just like you noelnash, my tire has the same length of laceration. i am even scratching my head where to pull off some extra money for that though it has just reached it's 1st anniversary. i feel punished 'coz my tire doesn't show much deterioration considering i just rode 15 mins to work. anywyz, i think we have to pay the price just to get some peace of mind.

Im sorry EagleOne, i cannot remember the name of that street, but i'm pretty sure it's in Calumpang area, i believe its in a route of the jeepneys going to pasig. :)

Mine's a "pasak" kit, you insert a sticky strip of rubber onto the hole after pulling the sharp material out, so you I don't have to detach the whole tire from the bike.
Tubeless tires doesn't really deflate that fast when puntured, but there are times that it does deflate fast and you'll end up flat tire on the road.
My puncture kit can be a temporary fix but on my experience, the strip of rubber gets stuck forever and is really hard to pull it out, doesn't affect tire performance so I don't consider it temporay. The first time I had it inserted by a vulcanizing shop was almost two years ago and until now it didn't move .... unless the tire is alreay worn out and that is risky and "pasak" method should be considered a temporary fix only.
Yep, for tires with inner tubes, cold patch (bicycle punture kit) is durable too. Its as strong as those hot patches used by vulcanizing shops as long as its applied the right way. I did it on my friend's bike long time ago.
Here's a thread when I had other flat tire along the way home. And Aljay's selling a punture kit for tubeless tires.

zvike005 January 18th, 2005, 02:38 AM bdw, what's a good brand for the tire, not tubeless? something that is both affordable and can withstand that kind of an experience.
Wolver888 January 18th, 2005, 02:58 AM Good brand for the tire? You mean cold patch for the inner tube? Not sure if any brand will do ... but what makes the difference is on how it was applied on the inner tube. With inner tubes, its kinda laborious doing it but once you know it how, its kinda easy but takes time .... when I did it on my friend's bike, it took us approximately around 8-10minutes to finish the patching and inflating. The cold patch costs around 20 pesos to 40 pesos a kit.
R-1 January 18th, 2005, 10:36 AM wolver, i think ive seen those "pasak" type repair kits. The ones i saw had big strips of rubber. Many motorcycle flats are caused by small punctures like very small nails. Seems a pity to enlarge those pin sized punctures so u cud put in the rubber strip, but if you dont youll never get the strip in.
But the "pasak' type of repair kit is the fastest and most convenient i think, imagine repairing a tire in 30 seconds!
Frank Woolf January 18th, 2005, 05:44 PM The kit I have has materials for tubed and tubeless tires. I used a similar kit before and almost all the plugs lasted for years. All except the one that blew out on SLEX.
The kit I have now is by Genuine Innovations and includes small pressurized gas cylinders but I think you would need about 6 cylinders for a big bike tire.

Not to mention saves you money too. A job like that in a vulcanizing shop costs from 45-75 pesos/hole. Bought a kit from Concorde at P145.00. Contains 1 tool and 4 strips of plugs. San kaya nakakabili ng plug strips? Sayang naman na pag naubos un plugs ko bibili uli ako ng kit. Dadami tools ko nyan :O.

Yes R-1, you said it right .... with these little holes, all you need is a portable pump to get you home. I only use the "pasak" when air is already getting out too fast and not able to bring it home:D.
Tukayo, I think you could buy some rubber strips from Aljay.
Here in Baguio they charge 60 pesos per hole.
Pic below is similar to what I use and have a 12 volt cigarette lighter socket from my motorcycle.:)
Brian dungo January 20th, 2005, 10:19 PM CYCLO sealant. everything is in the can. the air pressure, sealant all in one can. Saved me last Jan 9 on my way home from Caliraya. i attached the can in the front wheel nozzle valve, pressed the release lever and voila! the tire got pumped, the hole sealed and rode away. Its temporary though but surely will get u home. Get it at Concorde megamall. 400 pesos. :s
Wolver888 January 20th, 2005, 10:33 PM Biran Dungo, won't the contents sealant settle on one side of the tire when parked and affect tire balance when you start to ride it? Coz I haven't had the chance to used my aerosol tire sealent yet. :)
