Hi again guys,

My usual bullet proof 1983 Honda CBx 250 is experiencing some subtle trouble….so subtle that if you didn’t ride it daily you’d probably miss it.

I’m experiencing a loss of power. Before, before, when I slowed down I could continue on by just giving it more gas even if I’m at 3,000 – 3,500 rpm. Now I have to downshift to avoid that clunking sound in the engine. It also seems that it takes more time and more gas to get to 100 kph. The engine seems to be more strained as I go past 5,000 rpm (which is actually my cruising rpm).

The bike still starts up with out a hitch and I’m still able to reach 100++ kph. But it seems to take more effort to get up to speed.

I have about 11,000 kms on the odometer and I change the oil regularly except for the last one which took up to 2,500 kms before the change.

Does any one have any ideas on what could be wrong?

first thing you should do if you suspect any problem with your bike is look at the spark plug, what colour is the end? if black-try having a look at the air cleaner(filter). it may be blocked and need cleaning or replacing. if spark plug is light to gray brown that is normal and maybe you should get a motorcycle mechanic to look at the ignition electrics.

English,

Thanks for your response...I did check the spark plug and it was black..I will have to have the fuel/ air mix checked.

However, after suffering for 2 weeks on the power loss i noticed over the weekedn that the chain was loose. It actually touched the underframe when parked. I tightened it up and lo and behold I got my torque back....I never thought that someting so sibple could have such an effect....

Anyway thanks for the advice....

GLAD YOUR BIKE IS RUNNING BETTER NOW

The chain really has a lot to do with a power getting to the back wheel. Even the type of chain makes a noticable difference. Check your sprockets for wear and keep your chain in adjustment and oiled regularly.
