different manufacturers have different methods in helmet shell sizing...

shoei uses 4 shell sizes for their x11/xspirit helmets
shark uses 2 for the rsr2

not certain for other brands...

On the top end of the spectrum, most ARAI, SHOEI, and NOLAN/X-LITE helmets will have at least 3 shell sizes.

SHARK RSR2 has 2 shell sizes but with 6 EPS foam sizes.

KBC helmets mostly 2 shell sizes and 2-3 EPS sizes.

ZEUS helmets mostly 1 shell size with 2 EPS sizes but higher end models have 2 shell sizes (e.g. Z-1200, Z-608A, etc).

While most cheap helmets will usually have only 1 shell and 1 EPS size and will only vary in the liner thickness.

More shell sizes will translate to better aerodynamics and a more proportionate look (especially for smaller riders) which leads to better comfort. While more EPS sizes usually means a better internal fit.

This partly explains why some helmet models are more expensive than others.

sir ryan's post said it all...

that's also the reason why most giveaway helmets only have one-size...to have different sizes of molds for different shell designs/models is expensive on the part of the manufacturers...thus reflected on the cost of the helmet itself.

What does it mean "EPS Size"?

Thanks in advance!

EPS is short for expanded polystyrene foam or what we usually call "styrofoam".

sometimes, even sizing for the same helmet brand may differ due to the shape & design of the shell...that's is why it is recommended that a helmet be fitted first before getting one....

take a look at this...i found this at webbikeworld.com

Shoei has resolved this problem by designing four separate shell sizes for the X-Eleven. The smallest shell is used for the XXS, XS and S sizes; the medium shell is used for head size medium; the size large shell for head size large, and an extra-large shell size for XL and XXL. This is remarkable and also expensive -- there's a lot of extra cost involved in the design, manufacture, maintenance and the stocking of product with this many shell sizes, but it helps to ensure that the owner will find an exact fit that will be very comfortable and function as advertised.
