View Full Version : helmet to head odor
zvike005 October 30th, 2004, 03:50 AM with some good tips on how to clean our helmets, sometimes we just don't have the time to clean our helmets or better yet we just feel lazy so we just don't want to. so as a result, it is oozing with odors. when you take your helmet off from your head, the odor also sticks to your head. any quick tips on how to get rid off that odor from your head? wiping that with your hanky doesn't simply work. it really feels uncomfortable having someone close knowing your head is smelling dreadful, yayksss... :W
Wolver888 October 30th, 2004, 05:22 AM No choice bro, either clean it or bear it. :D
Coz sometimes too much dirt will already make your hair filthy even after a bath, this might even start a dandruff. ;)

i always wear bandana over my head and or a cloth hat before putting on the helmet. this case, bandana or hat will most likely will get the sweat off your head before it hits your helmet liner. it does work for me.
Elijah November 2nd, 2004, 10:21 AM I always use my balaclava for catching all that sweat.

froilanr November 2nd, 2004, 01:43 PM Siguro tiyaga nalang tayong linisin using soda yata yon. Meron dito sa MCP na thread RE how to clean ang helmet properly.
broker218 November 4th, 2004, 10:10 AM try putting baking soda in d helmet..let it stay for 15 to 30 minutes tapos vacuum... tanggal amoy nyan plus d pa masisira ang EPS liner. wear balaclava din
elgatonegro November 4th, 2004, 11:09 AM kung medyo wlang time sa paglinis ng HELMET...it is more advisable ang BALACLAVA to prevent odor in HELMET and to prevent our whole face plus neck part from any DUST and pollution. :)
Lapu-Lapu November 5th, 2004, 11:16 AM Mga Sir,
Lapu-Lapu November 5th, 2004, 11:19 AM balaklava pala, sorry!!!!!!!ano po ba yun......??????/
Wolver888 November 5th, 2004, 11:23 AM Bro, ganito ang balaclava. :)
Yung suot nila sa ulo ha. :D :D :D
Patrick November 5th, 2004, 11:53 AM Keeping Helmet smell away--
I have tried in the past all sorts of things, the vilest being spraing the helmet liner with Lysol.
Soap kind of works but leaves a waxy deposit.
What I do is to use baking soda.
Wach liner by giving it a sponge bath with a mild solution of baking soda and water. Once clean-- no more grey goop getting absorbed by the sponge, go over the liner with a very very strong solution of baking soda and water and do not sponge off the excess. Dry in front of and electric fan. The baking soda will show itself as white powder on the helmet liner.
1. Baking soda is a mild cleaning agent that was popular in the past for general household use.
2. Baking soda is a known deodorant usually used in closets and refrigerators
3. Baking soda is a popular ingreedient in skin tonics and is known to be good for the skin.
Therefore a residue of baking soda in the helmet after cleaning and electric fan drying gives:
Deodorizing Action
Additional Cleaning Action
some benefits to the facial skin
Because of the above, I only need to clean my helmet maybe once in 6 weeks (and I ride daily)-- the helmet only begins to smell past the 2 month mark!
Note:
I have found that any other deodorizer such as Ozium or fragrances that mask the smell of stinking helmets make it even worse-- it hurts the eyes.
Most of the smell is because of moulds and bacterial growth thriving on the moisture and protein content of the sweat plus dead skin particles. Baking soda impedes the growth and proliferation fo moulds and bacteria by presenting an adverse pH level
Mild Solution is +/-1 to 2 teaspoons ob Baking soda per cup of water
Strong is almost a super-saturated solution-- dissolve so much baking soda in the water that any more does not dissolve and just settles at the bottom-- that is something like 3-4 tablespoons per cup.
froilanr November 5th, 2004, 01:55 PM Thanks Patrick, I'll try baking soda to clean my helmet.:)
Lapu-Lapu November 6th, 2004, 09:23 AM Mga Sir,
froilanr November 6th, 2004, 10:59 AM I think meron scratch free na helmet, pero I think mahal yon kung meron man.
Ke HJC, Index or Zeus etc... Ako maingat ako sa gamit, pero meron parin konting gasgas ang helmet ko w/c we can't really avoid it to happen.:)
zvike005 November 22nd, 2004, 04:54 AM may balaclava ako pero di ko ginagamit. masakit sa mata kasi, para bang may radiation na papasok sa mata mo 'pag masyado nang maiinit. hassle din balaclava kasi real head turner 'yan pag isinuot mo sa maraming tao. i have remembered one time, maraming tao nakatambay malapit sa parking lot, then sinuot ko balaclava ko. tumingin cla lahat para bang nakahanda baka ehold-up mo sila, hehehe!!! right now i am using bandana. i find it convenient 'coz you can wear it around. astig pa dating mo with a helmet on one hand. kaya lang, 'di kaya ma damage helmet liner natin pag gamit bandana instead of balaclava?
scooter123 November 22nd, 2004, 08:54 AM i use the hjc coolmax headliner... head mo lang hanngang tenga ang natatakpan ... very cool, hindi babaho helmet mo, hindi ka din mukhang ninja hehehe

broker218 November 22nd, 2004, 11:45 AM Mga Sir,
zvike005 November 23rd, 2004, 02:43 AM very cool scooter123, para pala cyang snow cap kaya lang with an HJC signature. u've given me an idea of cutting my balaclava to look like that but let me think about it. mahal kasi bili ko non, hehehe!!!

tama, i did that before i got my hjc headliner...
the result: to ugly to post hahahahaha :O
tinapon ko na ata... it's hard to make the right cut for the balaclava... pero if you know how to do it right, kayang kaya yan!
suzer November 23rd, 2004, 08:28 PM always wear a liner (balaclava or the likes) in between ur head n ur helmet.
enanGD November 23rd, 2004, 11:20 PM Me i bought a deodorizer specifically made for helmets but i always use balaclava and i frequently clean my helmet after any long rides inside out and spray the deodorizer to prolong the downy smell effect :O
R-1 November 24th, 2004, 12:32 AM hey guys, a fellow rider has suggested stuffing your helmet with crumpled newspaper when not in use.. the newspaper will absorb the odors. It seems to work for me so far, but i also use the balaclava, baking soda and electric fan.
R-1 November 24th, 2004, 08:23 AM yes ung uleng baka effective rin, or if u dont have uleng maybe use an open bottle of baking soda instead. Ive seen refrigerators with an open bottle of baking soda inside.
pogie111 November 24th, 2004, 08:30 AM Mga Bro alcohol lang ang katapat nyan tagal ang odor at bacteria pa... after kong gamitin spray ko ng al-cologne yung loob na pinawisan den let it dry, tangal odor magiging mabango pa...

anong nangyari sa experiment mo arwin_actionhob?

Alcohol may work to get the bacteria out totally but will only mask the smell of sweat. I've tried it a couple of times. Di talaga kaya for heavy and prolonged use. Also tried that for leather straps on watches. Dehins talaga kaya. Coal and baking soda seem to be the better options plus a head cover siguro.

Mike D.

agree. cologne will only mask the smell, result is that much later you will have all kinds of smell mixing there until you cannot really describe the smell anymore!
wipe the inside of helmet with cloth moistened with water with baking soda ( or unscented alcohol if you r in a hurry), dry with electric fan. stuff crumpled newspaper inside when dry.
nice thing about the newspaper is that you can spray deodorant like ozium on the paper, not directly on the lining of the helmet, that way your helmet will continue to smell 'neutral' just like when it was new.
And wear some sort of bandana, balaclava, hanky, on your head that will absorb sweat and oils from your head. I also wear a large hanky to cover my nose and mouth (for dust) and this covers my chin, cheeks, and part of my neck too, the helmet strap dosnt contact my neck/chin area directly.
Better still wear a different helmet everytime, get 2 or 3 helmets if you can.
Rather than buy one expensive helmet, i got several moderately priced ones :)

better look for one with a finer stictching sa borders
skeelo January 2nd, 2005, 04:22 PM i tried uleng and it actually works... nice arwin, thanks for the tip man! and by the way, does action hobbies sell the face mask worn of one of the bikers from "biker boys"? the balaclava that covers nose down around the head and down the neck? like what vin deisel used on "a man apart" its really cool and with the coolmax on your head if you need to...
and any recommendations regarding detergents, soap or like to use for washing helmet lining? i dont want my helmet's lining damaged kc e, thanks for the info!

those are just some minor inconveniences for a rider. also kung mahaba yun buhok mo , masira ang 'hair-do' after wearing helmet :) buti ngayun for most uso ang 'semi-kalbo' :O

Minor?..Just think na may meeting ka 1st thing in the morning. Tapos
hehehehe..It happened to my friend kasi.

In my

Burnout January 8th, 2005, 11:33 PM I don't have a problem with helmet odor because when I'm not using it I place it by an open window. So it's always ventilized with fresh air. So no odor clings on.
R-1 January 9th, 2005, 12:11 AM i think buff is just like a bandana or like a balaclava but more versatile you can form more shapes out of it but i think its expensive, maybe almost p1000.
R-1 January 9th, 2005, 12:21 AM burnout, i think any helmet if worn often enough and long enough will smell bad if you dont clean it. the minerals from the sweat and oil, skin cells and hair cells will just accumulate there and bacteria will feed on those and.... its biological.
unless the owner is like one of those budhist monks who eats nothing but fruits. They say he was the sweetest smelling human, no bad odors coming from him at all. this was featured in discovery or nat geographic channel :)
