we all know that DSLR cameras are considered the latest when it comes to photography.. Kaya siguro yung iba, binibenta na yung fil slr nila kahit medyo mababa ang presyo. I can say sa affordable price na yun, marami ng freebies (extra lens, bags etc.).. My question is, "advisable pa ba ang film slr? if yes, what are its advantage over a much pricey DSLR?.. and sa halagang 5k-8k na film SLR, mura na ba ito? o makamumura ka nga pero malaki naman ang magagastos mo in the future sa films, developing, etc.?

would a film slr camera still be a good to have kahit wala kang masyadong pera? or would it be for people who have great passion for photography nalang(more of a hobby)?

help naman mga bossing... tia

i think sir, kaya naimbento ang digicam.. :)

To answer the question:

Use a film SLR only if you have money to burn because every shot counts, every contact print, and every enlarged print. Digital SLRs offer instant viewing, either in camera or downloaded to a computer. It is therefore easier to choose which photos to print at the end of the day. This way, you become more cost effective.

If you take a film camera to an event and you make a mistake, you can say goodbye to those moments. This is the reason digital cameras shine! It is also the reason why many are in to photography. If the shot is no good, they just delete and take another until they are satisfied. You don't get the same allowance for film.

HOWEVER, if you are serious about photography, then you should know the very foundations and start with film.

FYI: Professional quality films on a 135 format cost anywhere from 180 to 320 pesos per 36 shot/roll. That's just the film. If you want to print everything, that's another 7 to 12 pesos per print, and 80 pesos for the contact print (non-digital).

120 format films and larger are more scarce and therefore more expensive. HTH.

i have a different answer to your question...

if you started on Film SLR..chances are..you gonna keep a piece not only for sentimental value....but you had evolved with it....

theres a feeling of difference once you were a part of the film generation....

....miss mo yung tunog ng mechanical shutter
....miss mo yung ki-na crank mo yung film rewind
....miss mo yung blunder na it was a perfect composition tapos nung andun na pala yung moment....hindi pala na ka wind yung film lever...kaya ayun...di nag click yung shutter [my most common mistake]

...still is, as long na meron kang nabibiling film at alam mong gamitin

advantage?...

i can mention 3:

1] cheaper to buy the camera [ not the nikon F6]
2] you buy them if you had evolved with them

on the downside....

-you learn the basics the hard way...[which photography is all about]

i would keep a film slr kasi dun ako nagsimula...other than that....digital is the future

Well now that we're talking about the film era, here's what I miss:

1. The thrill of not seeing your shots
2. The ease of sending your exposed rolls to a pro lab (no more digital editing for me)
3. Contrary to number 2, I also miss developing my own rolls
4. The smell of developer, stop bath, fixer
4. Dark room / Enlarger
5. Platinum print vs silver halides!!!
6. The feel of metal in your hands!
.... wow nostalgia!

There seems to be a misconception about photoshop in the digital age. Photoshop stems from the darkroom process but lends a more efficient flow. Note, however, that everything from photoshop was first started in the dark room:

Layers, curves, levels, contrast, saturation, dodge and burn, etc. Even the selective coloring came from the dark room.

The only difference is that Photoshop is easier to learn and more friendly to the hobbyists. In line with this, there are only a handful of professional film users who actually touch the chemicals themselves. Most darkroom techniques are executed by pro labs but being a film photographer doesn't mean that photos aren't edited. If you actually spent enough time with film, you might be surprised how much post processing is required.

I'm saying this because a lot of people who try to be film afficionados claim that film photography proves to be more difficult and "professional" This is true but only to a certain extent. Both professional film and digital photographers delve into post processing so, if your basis for calling one a professional is in the absence of editing, then you are gravely misinformed.

- just trying to shed some light into the whole post processing issue.

Topic is too subjective for me, strikes too many deeply ingrained inner chords...

Whenever I go on a special trip, it's the usual which to bring: analog or digital dilemma. I don't like carrying rolls of film, but I don't like batteries and chargers either. :)

better keep a film camera and a slr camera instead, kung may budget naman,, para masaya.. pero for practical reasons digicam or dslr are the best.. very convenient, savvy, techy, plug and play functions,,, etc..

That's not an entirely bad idea. If you're lucky, you may even save a bundle by buying a digital BODY that is compatible with your existing lenses. That way, you get the best of both worlds at a drasticlly reduced price.

So far for me, I haven't found a digital body for my lenses yet, though... :(

Thank you, sir. They are MD lenses, and being Minolta, have the added benefit of unfortunately not fitting directly unto any other brand. :(

I hope there may very well be, but so far have had no luck sourcing an adapter, wishfully, for them to fit my present Olympus E-500 DLSR (especially with its unique Four Thirds mount).

You seem to have a good eye, sir, being able to recognize those lenses from so small a picture! http://bestsmileys.com/thumbs/7.gif

I have considered buying the Sony when it first came into the market but hesitated due to the (apparent) high cost of the system. As I'm not really sure if I'm completely sold on digital, it make take considerable effort on my part to start on yet another DLSR system. But know knows? Maybe if the Sony can truly offset its cost by working with my old Minolta lenses...

I am not really name brand specific (most other brands deserve their merits), but having begun with Minolta and finding it trusty for my purpose, I'm afraid I already developed a "sentimental" (if not financial) attachment to my Minolta and all it's accessories.

Thanks for the link!

Sony uses carl zeiss lenses that take very sharp images. Minolta, for some reason, invested more on camera bodies. Unfortunately, photography has more to do with the lenses. Nevertheless, I once had an x700 and my favorite lense to match it was a fast MD 21mm. I took many good pictures with it. You can also enjoy your minolta if you keep your lenses in good and clean condition. Better if you could upgrade to nikon.... they make better lenses.

..And Nikon adapts to a wider range of aftermarket lenses from other manufacturers. Your X-700 is a nice one too. My old Minolta set really began as a wedding gift to ourselves, what to document the new family's (especially the baby) growth together. Prior to this, all I worked with were point and shoot 110's, 126's, and 35 mm's.

Little did I expect it to last this long (and cost this much).

Admittedly nowadays though, most normal photographs I take with a digital. :)
