View Full Version : SNELL certification: Zeus versus Fullmer

The current list of SNELL certified lids includes Zeus 990 but not the Fullmer AF-S7.

If I read the boards correctly, the Zeus 990 has been reported as not SNELL certified while the AF-S7 is reported as SNELL certified. The link above tells otherwise. Ano ba talaga, kuya (o ate)?

(I only took interest with SNELL because it has been reported as having the most stringest safety standard, and a SNELL-certified helmet will pass the DOT certification requirements)

Refer to the following urls:

The current M2000 Snell Certified motorcycle helmet active list (updated 7-12-2004) (http://www.smf.org/certlist/std_M2000_M2005.html)

Older M95 certified motorcycle helmet active list (1-6-2003) (http://www.smf.org/certlist/m95cert.txt)

Apparently, only two sizes of the Zeus-990 passed the certification; 61cm and XL. The AF-S7 is NOT on the list.

I have a 990 model and the guy at ActionHobbies told me it isn't SNELL certified. Looks like it isn't, I only see a gold DOT sticker on the back of the helm.

the SNELL-certified helmet list seems to be actively updated.

So, mali pala ang sinasabi nung mga nagbebenta?

All HJC lids are at least Snell or DOT certified. And the lowest helmet model of HJC is sold at around the same price as a Zeus lid.

So if you have the budget for a Zeus lid but is in doubt about it's certification, then why not just get a low-end HJC lid for the same price?

Hello! Here's some info that I've so far learned about helmet certifications...

For a SNELL rated helmet, it usually has 2 SNELL stickers that is usually located inside the helmet liner just like most high end Japanese helmets. Some Zeus helmets like full face and motocross models (990, 901, etc) in our catalogue have SNELL rating especially for models sold in the US. Actually, most makers who want to sell to the US market will usually want to have SNELL approved models as SNELL is more popular there.

For our market, I opted not to buy the SNELL stickers on the Snell approved models because it will just raise the helmet prices w/o really adding to its safety value. I think Zeus helmet's offers good value for your money in terms of safety.

One important safety rating all Zeus have though, is the ECE 22.05 rating (European) which has one of the top helmet testing system and much higher than other government approvals like DOT (USA), JIS (Japan) etc. Zeus company is actually a big OEM maker for many European brands that's why it specializes in ECE approved helmets.

Personally, I think a helmet having ECE 22.05 certification is already very safe as there are actually many high end European helmet brands that dont carry SNELL certification (e.g. BMW, Schuberth, Caberg, etc).

HJC of course is a very good helmet brand but not all their helmets have Snell approval especially for non-US models :)

Hi, do you have references for this? I mean, can they manufacturer two types of the same model, one being Snell-approved for the US market while the "non-US" version is not certified?

For instance, the HJC CL-12 is Snell approved as per their list of certified helmets. If I understand your statement correctly, HJC is selling a version of the CL-12 locally that are NOT Snell-approved?

If that's true, would that be illegal?

Most of the info I got are from people in the helmet industry and I have copy of a detailed private market study (500++ pages) comparing most helmets sold in the US market.

Sorry, let me rephrase myself, what I meant was that some helmet models that have Snell certification in the US (with SNELL stickers inside the liner) may not be outside the US since they dont carry the "SNELL stickers" that are numbered bought from SNELL company which helmet makers pay for.

E.g. One of the companies I deal with in Japan is official HJC distributor there and their rep told me that HJC designed the shell specifically for the Japanese market (Symax n CS12 from what I remember and with very big quota). Meaning it has JIS approval of Japan (to be sold legally there) but not necessarily SNELL.

I just bough a snell helmet from http://snellhelmets.com/
The owner told me that they had to drop a ton of the snell helmets because of some big shake up and a lot of helmets lost the snell rating.
