View Full Version : Would you replace a helmet that was dropped on the floor?
D&G June 24th, 2008, 11:48 AM My 5 year old nephew was around for the weekend and last saturday saw my 1100c helmet lying on a couch. He's a young kobe fan and when he saw my helmet he mistook it for a shiny black basketball and tried to dribble it. It went down on the hard marble floor with a loud thud. Upon inspection it only had minor scratches on the top area, and the drop cracked the "spoiler" (don't know what you call it.) found on the back part of the helmet. Aside from those the helmet looks fine. Would you still trust your life with it in the event of an accident or would you rather buy a new one? Read here somewhere that once a helmet is dropped so goes its integrity.

ch1ngy June 24th, 2008, 12:58 PM i think its ok to still use it.. pero pag na involve sa isang accident na matindi ang tama ng helmet its not advisable anymore...
gl3nborj June 24th, 2008, 12:59 PM Sell it to me dirt cheap.
Imho. A helmet that can be damaged by that kind of abuse offers aint no protection at all. :D
Its better to buy those cheaper ones that can stand up to that child abuse he he he... ???
Seriously:
What you've heard regarding those dropped helmets are plainly hoax. Just one of their marketing strategies. Why would they sell high priced helmet as brittle as coconut shell? Helmets are made for abuse and protection.
verve June 24th, 2008, 01:00 PM thats right bro
buy a new one.
sometimes it may look fine outside pero ung
foam or what ever composite material na gamit doon eh na napipi/ nacompress na kaya malamang di na effective as a protection.
who knows baka may small crack sa loob yan.
malamang solid ung pagkakabagsak nyan.
its about time to hang him (not your nephew peace! i know you love him) your helmet to the rafters.
Ranimal June 24th, 2008, 01:01 PM buy a new 0ne'
Based on the circumstances and your concerns, I would get a new helmet. It sounds like it's been compromised and if the attempt was to dribble your helmet, it was more than a "drop".
I have young nephews and nieces as well. Luckily, they are at an age where a helmet is heavy too pick up and is an awkward shape. All my helmets are in it's original box, with bubble wrap, and placed on a dedicated shelf.
Find the lesson learned from this incident.
verve June 24th, 2008, 01:03 PM may point din si gl3nborj
baka ok pa yan.
kung high end yan kaya yan.
Wills_McLaren June 24th, 2008, 02:10 PM meron naman certain height kung kelan kailangan palitan. I dont think you need to replace it lalo na kung hi end naman.
I've read somewhere na meron talagang certain height of drop para palitan ang helmet.
NSCB June 24th, 2008, 02:47 PM @D&G
first of all....what is an 1100c helmet?
you've also mentioned that the helmet obtained a crack...aside from a scratch....what you can not see is a possible crack from the inside which may render the helmet useless when time comes that it should hit anything with your head inside it....
if i were you...i'd replace it with a new one.....unless you want to take the risk.
another lesson to be learned here is that...keep your helmet on a safe place when not in use...keep it away form kids, pets, and people who have nothing else better to do than to borrow your helmet...he he he
Payon Hunter June 24th, 2008, 03:24 PM yes kasi gasgas na eh :D
D&G June 24th, 2008, 04:17 PM Imho. A helmet that can be damaged by that kind of abuse offers aint no protection at all
@gl3nborj
You got a point bro. I thought of that too. Hate to spend any more on a helmet if the old one is still good enough.
malamang solid ung pagkakabagsak nyan.
@ Verve
Pero solid din ang pagkabagsak at parang slam dunk (he used both hands to slam it on the floor) ang pagdribol ng pamangkin ko. He he. I hate kobe b. he he. Marmol bro ang sahig.
Based on the circumstances and your concerns, I would get a new helmet. It sounds like it's been compromised and if the attempt was to dribble your helmet, it was more than a "drop".
@ Ranimal
Yep, he actually slammed it. There goes my investment. I guess I should buy a new one. The only consolation is that at least my helmet wasn't an expensive one.
I've read somewhere na meron talagang certain height of drop para palitan ang helmet.
@Wills
From what height kaya?
first of all....what is an 1100c helmet?
@NSCB
Bro, it's one of those Zeus helmets.
another lesson to be learned here is that...keep your helmet on a safe place when not in use...keep it away form kids, pets, and people who have nothing else better to do than to borrow your helmet...he he he
I know someone would say that.... Ha ha. You're right!
Wills_McLaren June 24th, 2008, 05:09 PM This is the information from SNELL website :
I dropped my helmet! Do I have to go buy a new one?
Generally the answer is probably not. Helmets are one use items, but are quite durable otherwise, at least the ones we certify. Frequent dropping or spiking a helmet on the ground, or other hard surfaces may eventually degrade the helmet's performance. Similarly if the helmet falls to the ground at highway speeds unoccupied the owner must be aware that some degradation may have occurred. In general the real damage comes when the helmet contacts an object with a head inside. The Foundation recommends that if you are participating in an activity that requires that you wear a helmet, that you avoid hitting stuff with your head. It can be difficult to readily determine if a helmet has been damaged, and the protective capabilities compromised without a thorough inspection by a trained professional. Some manufacturers may provide this service or direct you to these others that can perform these inspections. The Foundation recommends that if you suspect your helmet may be compromised, then replace it. If the helmet has been involved in an impact while in use, replace it.

chubaka June 24th, 2008, 06:07 PM I would say no...it's not that strong an impact to warrant replacing it. if you were going down the stairs while wearing the helmet and slipped hit the wall, then that would be enought to cause the proper damage and a replacement would be necessary.
jodes June 25th, 2008, 01:08 AM i dropped my hjc motocross helmet about a year ago. cguro about 3x while its hanging on the side mirror of my honda xr 200. bagsak sa road/semento. 2 years old na helmet ko . should i replace it na?

Great info bro. Salamat. This will definitely help us riders decide wether or not to buy a new helmet.

Thanks bro. I'll keep the helmet till I have some cash to buy a better helmet and use the old one for short rides.

Jodes,
Kelangan na siguro palitan. Here's why. Quoting from Wills' answer
Frequent dropping or spiking a helmet on the ground, or other hard surfaces may eventually degrade the helmet's performance.
zeus17 June 25th, 2008, 11:12 AM question..
sa case ng TS based on info on hand..
papalitan mo ba?
bacolodnon June 25th, 2008, 11:45 AM its time to replace your helmet when a strong enough fall occured, that might have damage the helmet's outer shell and its shock absorbing material inside. IMO
trust your instinct, for a peace of mind :)
D&G June 25th, 2008, 12:33 PM question..

But I wouldn't bet my life on it. My decision is I'll keep the helmet for slow short rides and buy a better one, (when I have the cash) for rainy days, night and long rides. :o
spectralknight8 June 25th, 2008, 12:37 PM Palagay ko papalitan ni TS not because of the fact na na-drop yung helmet. He knows the answer to this question.
Pero dahil na-open na sa kanya yung idea of buying a helmet, he'll buy a new one just as well hehehehe!
Peace bro!

He he. I'd love to go helmet shopping anytime kaso wala pa pang shopping. So, the zeus will do for now, Dropped, Dribbled or Slammed...:o
RedPePPer June 25th, 2008, 03:57 PM Ive dropped my zeus modular helmet a few times.. it saved my life before and im thankful for it., that was november of 2005 i bought it for P3800. at that time, i was one first proud owner of modular helmets..(Pauso p lang siya!).. newbie rider p lang me nun on board my newly purchased suzuki raider 125 with my best bud Paul (Flash5)...guess what, not more that 10 mins p lang, away from MOTOworld. cruising at 80kph while in the mid of the curve (entry to C5 from the Fort)i already prove its durability and reliability.. sumemplang kme for short! hehe.. ang laki ng gasgas nya sa may left side nya! imagine kung suot ko yung half face n unang suot ko, wakwak n siguro ang gwapo kong face.. haha.. thanks talaga..eversince then, I have dropped my zeus modular helmet a few times.. wala n akong paki..but did not replaced it. there was a time that it fell hard on the road while cruising at service road (alab to sucat). it slipped away from my arms.. there were minor scratches, but still,i did not replace it. it was only replaced, nung ninakaw ito dati sa parking mall of Asia.. huhu.. hapit yung tao.. walang patawad! dami n ngang gasgas he, pinatulan pa?! well, thats it.. to end this comment...
If you really feel to buy a new then buy a new one..
RonM June 25th, 2008, 04:17 PM i doubt a 5 year old can damage a quality helmet by trying to dribble it.
tellybuhay June 25th, 2008, 04:52 PM Papalitan? Hindi basta-basta syempre. I'll make sure na hindi na talaga pwede bago ko sya i-dispatsa.
Depende na lang talaga siguro.
Payon Hunter June 25th, 2008, 09:50 PM next question... pwede bang ibenta pa yun helmet? :D
commander007ph June 26th, 2008, 12:10 AM depende naman kung paano at saan accidentally nahulog.
well, S#$% happens.
eversince then, I have dropped my zeus modular helmet a few times..
there was a time that it fell hard on the road while cruising at service road (alab to sucat). it slipped away from my arms.. there were minor scratches, but still,i did not replace it
Tibay pala ng zeus. After all that has been said, the decision to replace a helmet after it has been dropped still lies on the user.
darkbenz June 27th, 2008, 11:07 AM Base on Helmet manual once na nagamit mo yung helmet on crush at hindi nabiyak replace it na lang para sure... IMO
d'virus June 28th, 2008, 09:08 PM to answer the question, sa hirap ng buhay ngayon, malamang karamihan eh ****-isin muna....
pero technically, a dropped helmet (yung sa TS dri-nibble so i assume na equivalent na rin sa serious drop) should be replaced.. all helmet manufacturers would strongly recommend that...
majongero July 2nd, 2008, 08:34 PM My Zeus 508w was dropped by my wife (then GF). It was again dropped again by a niece.
Then, of all people, I absent-mindedly dropped it from my bike.
And I had one good slip.
Mahal, e.
(Pramis, bibili ako ng panibago. Dapat last weekend pa.
