Of course clear helmet shields are best for night riding and in rain.

But on sunny conditions which do you prefer? Smoked shields or Iridium ones? I've heard some bad things about iridium shields but I still see many people using them on the road.

Thoughts, anyone?

howd you know it's an iridium? is that the metallic finish like lenses? i use a smoke for everyday... and it works for me :) i've heard of iridium lenses on oakley shades. does iridium helmet lenses make them more stronger? or something?

if you are talking about the lense that looks like a one way mirror, then be very ver careful with it. I heard they scratch up easily and if not cleaned immediately, will leave some marks.

I use light smoke.

Yes Iridium shields are those "metallic" or "mirror" like lenses. They come in many colors like blue, gold, silver, rainbow, and etc.

Smoked shields on the other hand are those plain black or yellow tinted lenses.

Now as RiderDriver pointed out, I have also heard that Iridium shields are easily scratched.

But which is more effective when it comes to sun protection? Smoked or Iridium?

i think basta UV coated yung lense no matter iridium or smoked would give you sufficient protection. lalu na siguro yung good quality brand lenses :)

Pretty much the same. The only thing that separates the Church from our home is the San Fernando Bridge! :)

Jeff,

Offline na kayo mag ligawan ni Burnout! Off topic na kasi kayo. heehee... j/k :O

===================

Going back to topic.... I'm using an iridium windscreen on my Suzuki and it works pretty well in sunny conditions. It's not as dark as a "smoked" windscreen but it still makes bright reflections easy on the eyes. I would assume the same thing applies to smoke/iridium helmet visors. The only things I have against the iridium coatings is that it's definitely very fragile. The coating is very thin and is simply coated over a stock clear screen so konting punas lang with a dry rag and gasgas na siya agad. Ganyan din sa mga iridium helmet visors. Kaya nga gamit ko ngayon smoke or clear helmet visors na lang. Easier to clean, easier to maintain, easier on the wallet... mas mura kasi ang smoke kaysa iridium.

Just my 2 centavos.

I see. Btw, how did the neon project go? Did you abandon it or something GSChan? I remember that I did start such a topic here and then you were experimenting with computer neon lights on bikes. Nice to see you again.

Hey Burnout,

I finished the cold cathode light installation on my ex-scooter before I sold it. I had two tubes hooked up to the scoot. One tube was under the tail and the other one was below the lower cowl. A small toggle switch operated the lights directly off of the 12v battery.

BTW, off-topic nanaman tayo.....

Ummm.... Yes, smoke vs iridium lenses..... I prefer the former.

Iridium lenses work well at night too. I use dark smoke if I only ride in the daytime but if I think I'll end up riding at night, I tend to use Iridium or clear lenses. Some Iridium lenses are bright as clear lenses at night.

Now I see. Thanks very much for your input. At first I couldn't figure why shield manufacturers still continue to produce iridium lenses after all these times. I thought there must be some sort of reason behind it why people keep using iridium shields even if they are easily scratched.

Now it seems that iridium lenses are also usable at night. Which explains why iridium shields are more expensive than smoked ones--it's because they're dual purpose! Wow you've really enlightened me on this! Thanks again!

I have one for my Suomy Spec 1R helmet and it does scratch up easy. But it looks pimp. :C

Got an Oakley Romeo with ruby red iridium lens. With its cost i thougt the lens are tough and scratch proof......bzzzz....wrong. Not sure how delicate the iradium on helmet and wind screen. But the oakley iradium lens cant get scratch even with the cleaning cloth that comes with it. :(

But the performance is really good. Unlike other shades it gives you a good tone of light yet doesnt make you feel sleepy never tried wearing at night doh. :C

Sorry what I mean is it CAN get scratched.

Can somebody confirm if Iridium is just a surface treatment on the lens? if yes, can it be refurbished like a re- plating of a metal? Is such service available here?

Can we also use Tinted film used on cars? I just though it could be cheaper, replaceable and wouldnt scratch (since it stick from the inside of the shield). It works well on car windows so I dont know why not on our helmet shield? Im not just sure if it can fit nicely with the convex of the shield.

Does anybody tried it? :C

I've also thought of using car window tint film for my helmet visor. But since I can afford real tinted visors, I told myself "eh, why bother?"

But it'd be worth a try though. I'm just not sure if it will be a safety concern in the long run. I don't know if it will somehow obscure your vision a bit since they're not originaly intended for helmet visors.

If you would use cartint on your visor it would'nt be much effective as the one coated/treated with the iridium ones, lalo na if you want to use it at night time. Burnout is right it was intended for windows and not for visors :)

It's a misconception that I don't want to wear helmets!

Actually without headlights and mirrors lang. Pero yung helmet is good for show eh, which is why I wear an expensive one. LOL

But it's good. Helmet is a must! :)

Back to the iridium helmet visors --- you guys are right, they scratch up very easily, mine's already so scratched-up... so most of the time I ride with clear or smoked sunglasses with the visor up... but yes, they were quite comfortable to use when they were new.
