View Full Version : Anti-pollution masks

How does these things work? I know that the number one enemy of bikers in this country is the air pollution. I'm thinking of using a breath mask but am not so sure about it. I've seen peeple use these things. But normally I'm an active rider, so I need maximum oxygen to keep my body energetic when I ride. I'm worried that using an anti-pollution mask would somehow reduce the oxygen flowing into me by a great measure. I can't really ride well if I feel suffocated by the mask.

Have any of you used these things? Any feedback?

wear one!
youll get used to the feeling soon enough. I use white 3m ones that you can buy in mercury drug.
if you have trouble adjusting, look at the outer portion of the mask and notice how grey it becomes in a few days time and think....these are my lungs....that should get you adjusted pretty quick....

cheers!

try a balaclava bro. it's the one where you put over your head and look like either you got out of a counter-strike game or an f1 race. good thing with it is its reusable as long as you wash it, it covers even your neck from dust and other pollutants, and it absorbs most of your sweat so your helmet wont go stinking over time. i used to buy those 3m mask at mercury too but this one is a better alternative. :)

my other alternative for my balaclava is the Daytona brand of FaceMask. it straps with a velcro at the back of your head. this looks like the one worn by Scorpion in the Mortal Combat video game. It has a washable filter and you could find this in most bike shops...

eloelo,
a balaclava is good for sweat absorption, that's what it was made for. but for controlling pollutants, you might as well just wear a tshirt over your head. the masks, either the 3m ones or the daytona or better yet, the Respro ones were designed to filter pollutants to a certain size from entering your respiratory system.

I'm using a Respro City Mask but with the thicker Techno filter (http://www.respro.com/urbancommuting_motorcyclin.php). Though, this is a rather expensive alternative to the 3M or balaclava approach, I'd like to treat my lungs as priceless. :)

Been using this practically ever since I started riding a bike.

Here's a bit of information about what the Techno can filter out:
Hydrocarbons including Benzene & Pyrene, Nitrogen Oxides, Sulphur Dioxide, Lead Oxide and Black Smoke, PM 10'S including Pollen Dust and Building Dust

Yes. I use masks I bought in the UK, problem is the filter soon needs replacing and they're hard to get. Made of charcoal I think.

As anyone will know, pull in at a gas station anywhere, wipe your face with some of the Wet Ones things, look at the color, then you know what you've been breathing. Never mind smoking, you don't need to........

I have a US bike catalog and in it they have whole face masks with filters which are Death's Heads! I think I'll get some. Imagine leering at an enforcer with one of those, or staring at a cab driver who just cut you up!!!! :O :O

They'd be crossing themselves all day :O :O

JP Cycles sells them. They have a website, sorry don't have the link to hand.

Now then, even better idea. Get all your mates wearing their Deaths Head Masks and go on a club run.........

I just saw a balaclava pic @ google, it looks warm, maybe too warm... don't you think it might be too hot in there especially if it'll be used here in Ph?? are these used only for racing? :?

It's been a looong time since I've bought mine. I'll give you a ballpark figure, though. The mask itself already comes with one filter and costs somewhere around Php 1,500. Filter refills costs around Php 900 and contains 3 filters.

Each filter is good for 45 days (as per what the manual says) but I use it longer than that.

Mask alternative:

Do you remember SARS. I've seen on the news that ladies bra can be converted to a good mask... and it's fashionable (and sexy).
