I'm amazed at how durable leather jackets are, and how they age gracefully as compared to textile. One of my buddies has a leather jacket that was handed down from his Granda to his Dad and now to him and that's really impressive.

I recently got a leather riding jacket of my own and want it to last for years to come. I know some you guys have leathers too and I'm wondering how you take care of it. Hope you can answer these questions:

What's your regular maintenance regimen after using it in a long ride or track day?

What care products do you buy and where do you get them?

How do you store them?

What do you do if it gets soaked in rain?

TIA for the inputs guys.

After using it in a long ride i just hang it, hinahayaan ko lang matuyo sa hangin yung inner lining

What care products do you buy and where do you get them?
wala, after wiping it with damp cloth to remove bug splatter let it dry then nilalagyan ko sya ng lotion na parang naglalagay ka ng lotion sa balat mo

How do you store them?
nakahanger lang

What do you do if it gets soaked in rain?
hayaan lang matuyo sa hangin, wag na wag mo ibibilad sa araw

Anong brand ng lotion? Pag Block and White lotion ba ginamit, puputi ba yung leather jacket?

Eto kasi hindi sira Google ko:

How Can I Care For My Leather Jacket?

Proper care for your leather jacket will help keep it looking good through many years of wear. In addition, if you care for your leather jacket well, you can prevent ripping and cracking which will let in the elements. There are a few simple measures which can be taken to keep leather jackets looking, feeling, and smelling wonderful.

Care for your leather jacket begins when you take it home. Most leather jackets are preconditioned, but you should apply a leather protector to keep the leather waterproof. Periodically, you will want to care for your leather jacket by stripping the leather protector off and applying a fresh, even coat. Look for products specifically designed for leather which do not contain waxes and oils that will clog the leather. These additives will prevent the leather from breathing properly.

If your leather coat becomes wet, dry it in a temperature-neutral area away from heat or fans. You may find that the leather will dry better if it is placed on a towel to absorb water. When the leather is almost dry, add a leather conditioner or moisturizer to keep it flexible, and when the leather has completely dried, add another coat. Make sure to care for your leather jacket well when it gets wet, because leather can be irreparably damaged by moisture and mildew.

If you live in a dry area, you should care for your leather jacket by frequently applying leather conditioner to keep it from cracking. If you live in a wet area, make sure that you find products designed for waterproofing leather as well as conditioning it, to keep the jacket flexible and dry. In snowy areas, make sure to gently sponge salt off your leather jacket to keep it from damaging the material.

If you spill substances on your jacket, first use a gentle brush to get the bulk of the material off. Then gently sponge it with warm water and mild soap before drying the leather jacket. You should also periodically care for your jacket made from suede or nubuck by brushing it to keep the grain of the jacket smooth and even.

Depending on how frequently the leather jacket is used, you should also periodically care for your leather jacket by taking it to a professional cleaners. A cleaner can care for your leather jacket by using special equipment and tools designed for leather, as well as conditioning the jacket to keep it flexible and glowing like new. A professional cleaner will also fix hem problems, sew torn lining, and patch a leather jacket if it is necessary.

To store your leather jacket, hang it on a wide padded hanger. Do not wrap leather in plastic or other nonporous materials, because leather needs to breathe. If you must store a leather jacket in a plastic garment bag, leave it open slightly for ventilation. Do not fold leather jackets for storage.

eto pa:

Leather Jacket Care

If you own a fine leather jacket then you've probably drawn a few looks here and there because of the style. Unfortunately over time, even a great leather jacket can turn ugly on you if it isn't properly maintained.

Prevention is Your Best Option

When you first bring your leather jacket home, you want to condition and waterproof it. After that, proper care will keep it looking fabulous for years. In fact, did you know that with proper care, leather out wears denim 20 to 1? I've heard stories where a good quality, well maintained leather jacket can last as long as 50 years!

Find out everything you can about your leather jacket, get the right stuff and set aside time for mandatory cleaning. If you don't do it yourself, then pay a pro to clean your leather jacket for you. You can thank me later for that tip!

Leather Jacket Repair

How can you repair the sleeves on your leather jacket when the edges are cracking, without making the leather weak or super soft?

If you have any loose edges, you can actually tack them up with a small dab of rubber cement which is sold at most grocery or retail stores. If the edges are not torn but just starting to look rough, one of the best options is for you to use a combination of mink oil and beeswax.

Typically this concoction is sold as paste, making it easy to apply. While it helps to improve those rough spots, it does soften but not too much. This combination will also help preserve the leather and prevent stains.

Leather Jacket Maintenance and Restoration

One of the top products you can buy for your leather jacket is called Lexol. This brand is excellent for restoring worn leather, bringing it back to its natural state. Another professional cleaner/conditioner is called Fiebing's All Purpose Leather Cleaner and Conditioner. It too helps restore leather that is worn while also helping to prevent water spots, stains, and even cracking.

Another great product that does it all, conditions, waterproofs, preserves, softens, and restores leather is called Snow-Proof. This product has no color or odor and is excellent on leather jackets as well as boots and shoes. Best of all, it will not leave a greasy feel.

Carnauba Cream will also help to restore and smooth out your leather jacket. It helps to resist scratches and finger prints and does a great job of restoration. One other product you should investigate is called Leather Balm with Atom Wax. This particular product was formulated specifically for leather to help with preserving and restoring. It also helps produce a nice soft, natural finish.

I suggest doing some research on these products before settling on one. Type the product name into a search engine and read up on their different properties. Prices and results will vary depending on the application.

Thanks for the feedback Sir Denwar and nice googling work Sir Gundam. I read in the web somewhere that are conditioning lotions applied to leather jackets to keep them supple and moisturized. I dont exactly remember the brand or if they are avalable locally.

I agree, that wide padded hanger will surely keep it in the right shape.

yung leather jacket ko kinain ng insekto yung leather sa collar nagkaroon ng mga puti-puting uka-uka. Pinatungan ko na lang ng black Kiwi shoe shine. Problem solved! (I dont recommend you put Kiwi all over your leather jacket though. Siguro pang remedyo sa mga discoloration for black or brown leather jackets.

Any specific brand of lotion you're using? I'll take from your experience cause you'd been wearing leathers longer than I have.

TIA Sir Denwar.

By the way, do you work for the the BJMP? One my father's former drinking buddy worked for the BJMP too, you might know the guy.

gurus ...

advisable po bang labhan or may dry clean services specifically for leather jackets ???

kasi po yung jacket ko na combination ng mesh and leather, yung mesh po .. madaling dumumi, so nilalabhan ko yung jacket, pero napansin ko na merong portions ng leather na nababakbak ... is there a specific soap or detergent na pwedeng gamitin para sa leathers ???

and kung full leather jacket naman po, di maiiwasang pawisan ... so yung textile na lining sa loob, babaho ... same situation, pwede po bang labhan or dry clean to ???

salamat po sa mga sasagot ...

you can buy leather conditioner (from the makers of Turtle Wax)sa auto section ng True Value or ACE Hardware. It really works! Don't use shoe wax/polish because it contains petroleum by-products which will dry out the leather.

Also, don't store your leather in plastic garment bags, use cotton fabric or paper bags so that the jacket can 'breathe'.... also avoid damp closets since mildew (amag) can eat through the jacket if you leave it long enough.

Yung ibang leather jacket, merong foam pads, yun ang rumurupok o nabubukbok over time. Wala kanang magawa dun kundi papalitan o patahi.

(Buset)

Sana makatulong...
