AMA contributes $100,000 to crash-study fundraising effort
Ever since The Hurt Report was published by Dr. Harry Hurt back in 1981, his study has been the cornerstone for most motorcycle safety programs around the world.
Now the United States Congress finally approved federal funding for a new, comprehensive study of motorcycle crashes to be done by the Oklahoma Transportation Center.
But…..
there’s one string attached. The federal grant for this research requires the user community—that means us—to come up with matching funds before the federal grant will be released.
Here’s how the math works: The federal government has pledged up to $2.8 million to this project. And it’s requiring 50 percent matching funding from us. That means we need to raise $2.8 million of our own to get this study done.
That’s why the AMA has initiated a drive to raise the $2.8 million needed. AMA has pledged $100,000 initially to kick it off and will be urging the companies involved in the industry to follow suit.
They have set up a site where ordinary people can contribute to this cause. You can view the “Fuel the Fund” website here.
This is a welcome development which will surely have an impact here in the Philippines as well as the rest of the world. With the number of accidents involving motorcycles on the rise, an exhaustive new study will shed light into the reasons and maybe the solutions to these problems.
