The NAMSSA-Philippine Motocross Team renews its quest for the Asian diadem as it competes in the opening round of the 2006 FIM Asia Pacific Supercross Championships set at the Calvo Memorial Raceway Park in Jigo, Guam, USA on Saturday January 21.
The kickoff leg marks the US territory’s fourth straight year in hosting a round of the premiere motocross series which brings together the top riders from over 12 nations in the region.
Reigning national champion Glenn Aguilar will spearhead RP’s campaign anew as he sets eyes anew on reclaiming the prestigious Asia Pacific Supercross diadem he won in 2003.
Though reeling from heartbreaking runner-up finishes in the past two racing seasons, Aguilar remains undaunted and in high spirits up against the region’s bests led by defending champion James “Robo” Robinson of New Zealand, top Australian rider Jye Harvey, Tiger Sugiyama of TOF Kuji Racing Team Japan and Thailand’s national champion Turbo Theplib. Joining Aguilar in Guam are Kenneth San Andres, the fast-rising motocross star from Valenzuela City, in the 125 cc division and Rafael Enriquez, a nine-year-old sensation who has been making waves in the Peewee and Junior 65 races in recent years.
The NAMSSA-Philippinene Team’s Guam sortie is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Olympic Committee, the Department of Tourism, motorcyclephilippines.com and Inside Racing Magazine. Aguilar and the rest of the Philippine team will have their first taste of night-time racing with the long line of races scheduled for the two-day event expected to stretch way past dusk. The country’s riders are all looking forward to the experience and have high hopes of bringing home the top prizes in their respective divisions.
Accompanying the Philippine motocross team are NAMSSA President Kenneth Falco and Stephan Carapiet, the Vice President-elect of the FIM UAM Management Council.
Carapiet, a NAMSSA director himself, bagged the prestigious position during the elections of the 19-member international sporting body held last week in Macau, China. Carapiet was also nominated as President of the UAM Commission for Motocross, Supercross, Enduro and Freestyle Racing and will be serving a four-year term which commences this year.
Round 2 of the 2006 FIM Asia Pacific Motocross Series will be staged in Puerto Princesa City, Philippines on March 19. For details and information on the FIM UAM Asia Pacific Supercross Series and NAMSSA events and activities, please email namssa01@hotmail.com.
